This document defines and describes several common medical abbreviations related to the urinary system: KUB refers to an x-ray of the kidneys, ureters and bladder without dye; Cath is the catheterization procedure to withdraw urine or insert dye through the urethra and bladder; Cysto is a cystoscopy to visually examine the bladder using an instrument; GU stands for the genitourinary or urinary system which filters blood and removes waste; and RP is a retrograde pyelogram using dye through the urethra to outline the bladder, ureters and renal pelvis.
