Not only does BIM enable us to design effectively and communicate design choices to our clients via 3D visuals, it is also key in how we collaborate with the other professionals such as structural, or M&E engineers.
This presentation was specifically about how to use BIM for green retrofit projects and James talked a lot about Granit's project at 1 Lambourn Road - which we designed and built as an example of what's possible with green retrofit. There are also two other schemes where we have used BIM extensively throughout the design process, one in Battersea and the other St John's Wood.

Building Information Modelling (BIM) Lessons at University of Hull's Student ...Sewell Construction
Partners shared BIM lessons learned to date on the University of Hull's £30 million student accommodation complex.
The project will see six new accommodation blocks, housing 560 students, open in 2016.
A new protocol for Building Information Modelling (BIM) has been followed from the outset of the project, which saw developers Sewell Construction start on site in June.
BIM already sees collaboration and information shared between engineers, clients, architects and contractors in a 3D format and is widely used within the construction industry, however, the Government will mandate BIM Level 2 for all centrally-procured government contracts from April 2016.
Using these new guidelines on the university site means designs and briefs for the project have been more thorough than ever before, providing further cost and quality assurance for the university.
It also includes looking at the whole life of the building and ensuring facilities management plans are in place from the start, reducing variance in design.
Estates staff from the University of Hull along with project partners from Sewell Construction, ARUP, SES, GSS Architecture and Planon have shared their findings of a pragmatic approach to BIM Level 2 to date with University estates teams from across the Yorkshire region, in a bespoke event at the Hull campus.

We kick-started the series with a webinar for the Cross-Whitehall Sustainability Practitioners Forum. These webinars will provide the practitioners with the latest information, knowledge and policy announcements on a range of sustainability issues and was decided to launch this series by addressing BIM. BIM is a new requirement for government which Sustainability Practitioners will need to be aware of and one that will help Departments in the achievement of the mainstreaming commitments outlined below.
The Green Government Commitments require transparency and, in addition to the above requirements, must address the following areas: climate change adaptation; biodiversity and natural environment; procurement of food and catering services; sustainable construction; and staff wellbeing and quality of life. The Government Construction Strategy published May 2011, set out the framework for a range of workstreams, all of which have the ultimate aim of reducing the cost of government construction projects by 15-20 per cent by the end of the current Parliament.
The BIM task group are supporting and helping deliver the objectives of this strategy and the requirement to strengthen the public sector's capability in BIM implementation with the aim that all central government departments will be adopting, as a minimum, collaborative level 2 BIM 2016.
This webinar examined how BIM can support central government departments in their achievement of collaborative level 2 Bim by 2016 and highlight the great work already taking place within this field.

Challenges
• The client provided us inputs like hand drawn sketches, conceptual sketches, pdf files etc. First thing to
do was to understand inputs in different forms through proper & effective client communication.
• The important task was to add on the creativity to the project to give it an excellent architectural
look.
• So to build new architectural models & to coordinate it with other disciplines like structural & MEP was
difficult sometimes.
Execution
• The inputs available with us were in the form of hand drawn & conceptual sketches, pdf files, which
we were to convert into intelligent BIM models using Revit.
• Next step was to create BIM models with different disciplines like Architectural, Structural & MEP which
was successfully accomplished as per client’s requirement in the form of 3D Revit Models.
• Finally after that we started to look into the coordination between the models, so called Clash
Detection with the help of Navisworks & were successful in scrutinizing all the clashes.
• The build up of architectural objects from concepts helped the client to give it a unique architectural
look.
• As same technical team was dedicated for the project, the client was really satisfied for smoother
communication & coordination which further reduced overall time & cost as well.
