Christian Lumbera was a Filipino poet, critic, and dramatist born in 1932 in Lipa, Batangas. He received his Bachelor's, Master's and Ph.D. in Comparative Literature. He taught at several universities in the Philippines and was arrested in 1974 by the Philippine military. He wrote several musical dramas and poems. He authored many books on Philippine literature and film. He received numerous awards including the National Artist Award, Ramon Magsaysay Award for Journalism, Literature, and Creative Communication Arts. He held visiting professorships at universities in Japan and the United States.
