Social Media Defined
content created by people using highly
               accessible and scalable publishing
technologies. At its most basic sense, social
media is a shift in how people discover, read
and share news, information and content.
It's a set of technologies, tools and platforms
           facilitating the discovery, participation and
sharing of content. It is transforming
monologues (one to many) into dialogues
(many to many) and the democratization of
             information, transforming people from
content readers into publishers. Social media
has become extremely popular because it
allows people to connect in the online world to
form relationships for personal and business.
Businesses also refer to social media as user-
             generated content (UGC) or consumer-
                      generated media (CGM).

How Much Do you Really want
 to Hear?
   • Gathered in a community or
   through a communication
channel, they have a voice and
   impact.

   • The things they say could
   either help them think and
   develop, benefit or do them
   harm (in REAL TIME)

    Measure important things
 Not everything can be measured in a

Social Media Optimization
the Future of the Internet
MUST read: BBC News, The Tech Lab: Paul Twomey

  http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/8064579.stm

  • Future growth “will come from the
  world's developing economies, and it
won't even be reliant on access to
  personal computers.”

  • Ten years ago, 100 million people
used the internet. Today it is 1.4
billion. By the end of 2010, 5 billion
people will have a mobile phone.
Many of these will be internet
  enabled.
Vision of the Future
Wave of the Future
The enterprise implications of
Google Wave:
blogs.zdnet.com/Hinchcliffe/?p=400
 Integrates many key features of e-mail,
  IM, microblogging, media sharing into
  one “Wave” or browser-like interface
 Can be moved or embedded anywhere
  HTML can be embedded
 Largely complements and doesn’t
  replace existing communication and
  collaborative applications.
http://wave.google.com/help/wave/about.html

What’s a Wave
A wave is equal parts conversation
                 and document
                 People can communicate and work
                 together with richly formatted
text, photos, videos, maps, and more.

                 A wave is shared
Any participant can reply anywhere in the
message, edit the content and add
participants at any point in the process.
Then playback lets anyone rewind the
wave to see who said what and when.

                 A wave is live
                 With live transmission as you
type, participants on a wave can have
                 faster conversations, see edits and
                 interact with extensions in real-time.
My Impressions: the Wave
                                        • This could easily
                                        change the
                                        “microblogging” &
                                        Email
                                        landscape, radically

                                        •Still pre-beta, so there
                                        will be changes (8
                                        days old)

                                        • Open API will result
                                        in flux of new apps

  • 4. Social Media Defined content created by people using highly accessible and scalable publishing technologies. At its most basic sense, social media is a shift in how people discover, read and share news, information and content. It's a set of technologies, tools and platforms facilitating the discovery, participation and sharing of content. It is transforming monologues (one to many) into dialogues (many to many) and the democratization of information, transforming people from content readers into publishers. Social media has become extremely popular because it allows people to connect in the online world to form relationships for personal and business. Businesses also refer to social media as user- generated content (UGC) or consumer- generated media (CGM).

  • 21. the Future of the Internet MUST read: BBC News, The Tech Lab: Paul Twomey http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/8064579.stm • Future growth “will come from the world's developing economies, and it won't even be reliant on access to personal computers.” • Ten years ago, 100 million people used the internet. Today it is 1.4 billion. By the end of 2010, 5 billion people will have a mobile phone. Many of these will be internet enabled.

  • 24. The enterprise implications of Google Wave: blogs.zdnet.com/Hinchcliffe/?p=400  Integrates many key features of e-mail, IM, microblogging, media sharing into one “Wave” or browser-like interface  Can be moved or embedded anywhere HTML can be embedded  Largely complements and doesn’t replace existing communication and collaborative applications.
  • 25. http://wave.google.com/help/wave/about.html What’s a Wave A wave is equal parts conversation and document People can communicate and work together with richly formatted text, photos, videos, maps, and more. A wave is shared Any participant can reply anywhere in the message, edit the content and add participants at any point in the process. Then playback lets anyone rewind the wave to see who said what and when. A wave is live With live transmission as you type, participants on a wave can have faster conversations, see edits and interact with extensions in real-time.
  • 26. My Impressions: the Wave • This could easily change the “microblogging” & Email landscape, radically •Still pre-beta, so there will be changes (8 days old) • Open API will result in flux of new apps http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/google_wave_our_first_hands-on_impressions.php

Editor's Notes

  1. Just a little about me.Background at Xerox in sales of memorywriters. An “early Adaptor” of web technologies with web site, blog, now wife’s running the blog.SciFoo Google link and bias.
  2. From Wiki: Content created by People Publishing their ideas, thoughts, news and information using various tools and platforms. Participating and dialogues and Democratizing information (making it a matter of vote and feedback from others) Building relationships with other people and the businesses they represent.
  3. Social Media is Networking. Like any networking “event” you need to Listen to others (it’s not about YOU) and PARTICIPATE.It is NOT a Sales engine, not a bully pulpit. Well, you can try that, if you’d like, but I would advise it.Create a dialogue and build relationships, thereby building credibility in yourself, your brands, products, services. Make them more human and put a human face behind them. But it take Commitment and a plan and a strategy of measureable goals and objectives.
  4. This is just what’s out there “now” and it’s already out of date. A lot of Niche networks in Google Groups, which I don’t see anywhere. Same with FriendFeed, which I’ll talk about a bit later.
  5. SM is Sharing of information, so where do people get there information?Take this as an “illustration”, not a “graph” and you’ll be alright.
  6. People now have means to speak about a product on any number of platforms, blog, message boards, IM, twitterThe impact is already “validated” by the community forum. It has more of an impact than a single voice.
  7. Take a quick Tour“Passively” collect result in a Firehose format. Option to filter result and search them, but it can quickly get out of hand.Probably the easiest to use and most useful tool I use for collecting information.
  8. More focused search. Did I forget to mention I am Google centric? There are many other “alter” like programs out there aside from Google Alerts. I just happen to think since Google has the best Search Engine, they will return the best results. Google’s search engine is “biased” towards Social Media, wiki’s, tweets, blogs, etc.
  9. Tweetdeck or Seismic Desktop will greatly enhance your twitter experience. If you’re lucky enough to have an iPhone, I think it’s going to be preferred. Anyone have a “G phone”? For the BB, since the web browser isn’t real good, Ubertwitter works well.
  10. Aggrgator: Take a quick Tour
  11. As you can see, I borrow most of my information. These activities can be run on any platform.
  12. So you’ve been listening, now it’s time to participate. And let me remind you (illustration on the right) that in a big company, so far nothing has even left your Company, unless you want it to. These tools apply to a small community, like a Corporation.
  13. This is another great video I borrowed to illustrate why Participation is essential.
  14. If we have time, let me show you how I participate.
  15. It takes a strategy, research,TRAINING, a consistent message, TOOLs and Tactics, a holistic Business approach.Measure what is important. Don’t try to measure everything.
  16. Another great video about Optimizing your Social Media System
  17. “The implications of the rapid penetration of the internet are staggering”  “ ..few would have envisaged that in such a short time, the internet would come to play a crucial role in international commerce, communications, government, education entertainment, and delivery of services.”
  18. From the same guys, a specific example of where this is heading, soon. This is not science fiction. The tools and platforms are in place now to make this happen.
  19. Last week, literally a week ago Thursday at the I/O Conference, Google announced a breakthrough, new platform: Google Wave (did I mention I am bias towards Google?)The feedback from every credible source, including directly from people at the I/O conference, is that this is going to be a revolutionary new system/platform which integrates microblogging, email, web browser, video, pictures. Just about every application you are using today, will be broken into Waves. And let me preface this with the fact that I am not an IT guru so I don’t know what ½ of this stuff means, but I think I can convey my enthusiasm for what this could mean if this lives up to early expectations.
  20. In other words, they didn’t pull a Microsoft and try to make existing technology “obsolete”
  21. It’s really all about Social Media
  22. The top image is the full screen snapshot. There are already a ton of them on the web if you haven’t looked already. Depending upon your level of interest, you can watch the whole roll out presentation, but it’s 80 minutes long, so we won’t have time to watch it today.
