This document summarizes Beth Dulin's final presentation project on rewriting a compulsory Year 8 science unit to make it more independent.
The project aimed to rewrite the Independent Research Project unit to make it truly independent while still addressing risk assessments and practical work. Beth developed a self-paced smart board sequence and portal to allow students to work independently through red and green doors of varying difficulty.
Data showed that using technology, independent work, and differentiation led to improved student outcomes, with higher average marks and more students scoring over 90% in 2012 compared to 2011 and 2010.
In October 2012, School Improvement Network surveyed educators nationwide about the impact of class size on educator effectiveness and student achievement. 5,115 educators responded, and 65% said their class sizes have grown over the last three years. Educators also shared their opinions on the ideal class size, and how class sizes impact students and their teachers.

The Road to Redesign: Applying UX Strategies to Handle Skeptical Speed-bumpsMeghan Hatalla
This UxPA-MN presentation guided viewers through the redesign of Metropolitan State's online student orientation. The year-long project provided opportunities for user research and testing and lessons for gaining support from a skeptical constituency.
The online orientation redesign involved coordination of resources across departments, a challenge in itself, and proved to be a sensitive point for many of the subject matter experts involved. I used information gained from surveys, job shadowing, and usability testing to inform responsive design, content strategy, pathway, and also to prove to a skeptical and emotionally invested constituency that the five-year-old website needed to be updated.
A Mixed Methods Approach to Examine Factors Affecting College Students' Time ...Pat Estes, M.S.
With increasing tuition and accountability compounded by decreased funding, institutions face pressure to demonstrate higher graduation rates while decreasing time to degree. This study employs a mixed methods approach to determine factors affecting time to degree from the student perspective. Using a grounded theory approach, factors influencing time to degree were examined: curriculum length, academic planning and choice, student accountability, personal experience and preference, finance, facilitators, and procedures and scheduling.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
