Comparing Hume And Popper s Views On Induction
In this paper I will be utilizing Hume s writings to point out his views and compare his views with
Popper s views on induction. The first thing I am going to be doing is clarifying the problem of
induction that I will be discussing. Secondarily, Hume s issues with induction will be outlined, and
Popper s proposed solution will be detailed. Finally, the assertions that I have made, and my views on
both the issue and the solution is going to be explicitly laid out. What are the primary elements of
induction? Induction, is the name given to ... deductively invalid but allegedly good arguments. (22,
Ladyman) Enumerative induction is where we infer some law or theory is true for the future after
making some number of observations that confirm ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
(51, Ladyman) Popper s method of devising a solution to the induction problem is by arguing that
inductive inferences do not detract from the justification of scientific knowledge. Specifically, Popper
argues that scientific knowledge is entirely independent of all inductive reasoning; this response is
heavily based on the concept that science is founded in the falsification of theories. Ladyman
comments that Popper s conceptualization of scientific knowledge is entirely deductive due to the
inferences of falsified instances. (69,

Identification of Unknown Ketones Essay
Purpose: The purpose of this experiment was to identify one ketone with Thin Layer Chromatography
and one using NMR spectrometry. We will do this by making 2, 4 a DNPH derivative and checking
the melting points. Theory: By Using specific methods of compounds detection, we can match an
unknown compound with a known compound because similar compounds will display similar
characteristics. In this experiment, identifications of the unknown ketone was accomplished using thin
layer chromatography, melting point, and NMR spectrometry. Thin layer chromatography is very
quick but sensitive way of determining the components of a mixture or a specific compound from a
list of knowns. This method is the one which was utilized in the ... Show more content on

Next, I observed my Proton NMR which had only one peak. The multiplicity is six. Therefore, I have
six hydrogens. Using this information, I was able to conclude that my unknown is 2 propanone.
Discussion/Conclusion This experiment was done to identify one ketone with Thin Layer
Chromatography and one using nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometry. When using Thin Layer
Chromatography, I was able to determine my unknown by observing my slides and seeing that the
spots of my unknown are most like those of 2 heptanone in height and size. Furthermore, I calculated
my Rf values and determined that my Rf value of Unknown K (.5) was most near my Rf value of 2
heptanone (.51). Finally, comparing the derivative melting points of these two substances confirms
that 2 heptanone is my unknown. The derivative melting point of 2 heptanone is 89 while my
unknown was 87. When using nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometry, I had unknown A. With this
unknown, I had two peaks on my CNMR which told me I had one carbon on both sides of the line
symmetry. Also, on my HNMR I had one peak with a multiplicity of six, therefore, I had six
hydrogens. Using this information I was able to conclude that my unknown as was 2 propanone.
Furthermore, in this experiment we learned that NMR takes advantage of the magnetic properties of
the 1H and 13C nuclei. We are not concerned with 12C because it does not have a magnetic

How does Yukio Mishima portray Glory
The Sailor Who Fell From Grace with The Sea is a story about a 13 year old boy, Noboru who had lost
his father 5 years ago. His mother, Fusako owns a luxurious clothing store and lives a lonely life as a
widow. Noboru is part of a gang that is led by another 13 year old boy called The Chief . Instead of
referring to one another by their names, in the gang, every member is referred to as Number One,
Number Two and so forth. Noboru and the gang participates in horrible acts such as dissecting and
dismembering a cat. Everyone in the gang are nihilists, they believe they are the wisest of all and that
they are incorruptible. Led by The Chief, who grew up not having good relationships with his parents
and spent his time reading old books in his library, the gang are firm believers of tradition and follows
the Bushido code, the ways of the Samurai. The story continues with Fusako meeting a sailor, Ryuji
and they both fall in love.
Ryuji is first presented as a simple man whom also have strong traditional beliefs. However, he has
been influenced by Japan s westernization to change his social status and keep up with the rapidly
influenced Japanese society. Ryuji is a person who is pleased with his physicality, however his
personality is depicted by Mishima as unsociable and eccentric [pg 15]. This is done by Mishima to
make us feel sympathetic towards Ryuji because his loneliness makes him seem weaker although he is

The Geography Of Paraguay
To begin, I will be writing about Paraguay. I will be writing about the country; where is it, and
climate. Also other things like the people, points of interest, and favorite holidays. I will also be
talking about the history, government, and geography of Paraguay. First, the geography of Paraguay.
The geography of Paraguay is about the size of California. The population is at its most on the grassy
slopes, which is towards the Paraguay rivers . The part that isn t so populated in west of and is called
the Chaco region, where it is covered in marshes, lagoons, dense forests, and jungles. It is surrounded

West Nile Virus Essay
By learning about different viruses in class, it sparked my interest in further researching a common
virus known to the word called West Nile virus. Affiliated with the genus Flavivirus, this virus can be
transported globally due to being classified as a mosquito borne arbovirus1. Mosquitoes, belonging to
the genus Culex, can facilitate the transportation of this pathogen by consuming the blood of an
infected bird, being the main reservoir, and then passing it on to another animal or human1 3.
Mosquito activity is at its peak during the months of summer and autumn, therefore these months
depict the most cases of West Nile virus4. Humans play no role in the transportation as they are coined
dead end hosts due to not being able to produce enough ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Majority of the infections, around 80%, can be categorized as asymptomatic but this is not the case for
all5. West Nile fever, indicated by fever, headache, nausea etc, can develop in approximately 20% of
the infected people5. In rare cases, less than 1% of disease ridden individuals can actually develop
more serious conditions like meningitis, encephalitis, and acute flaccid paralysis5. Classified as
neuroinvasive diseases, these clinical conditions are more prone to occur in older individuals
exceeding the age of 605. This doesn t exclude the population ranging from newborns to middle aged
as it hasn t been proclaimed that they are immune to developing some of these disorders6. Overall,
people infected with this virus will either experience mild symptoms or might have to deal with more
serious problems.
Surviving the neuroinvasive diseases does not mean that the battle is to be presumed over. Through
many reports, it has been stated that people still experienced symptoms of the West Nile virus even a
year after the diagnosis was made3. Long term consequences of the disease can be mental health
problems such as depression, tremors, headaches, muscle and motor weakness and etc3. But
researches have yet to come to a conclusion whether these consequences are due to the damage done
by the virus or the body s own immune

The Suicide Of A Patient Essay
The suicide of a patient suffering from an incurable disease, effected by the taking of lethal drugs
provided by a doctor for this purpose, is the dictionary definition of assisted suicide, or assisted death.
Much debate has taken place over whether or not this should be a right of the terminally ill, and
whether a doctor can grant that wish. Although modern medicine has brought a multitude of benefits
to humanity, it cannot relieve the pain and suffering associated with the dying process.
Kate Pickert, for TIME Magazine, notes that when people hear the term euthanasia they think of the
battle in the 1990 s, featuring Jack Doctor Death Kevorkian. Slowly, countries, or at least individual
states, have chosen to declare assisted suicide as legal or illegal based on a variety of reasons but
religion being the most prominent reason. The idea of assisted suicide is considered illegal in
considering the Biblical Commandment, which states Thou Shalt Not Kill. Despite this, some
christian societies are considering the idea. Australia legalized it in 1995 but unusually, recanted that
law in 1997. Also in 1997, the United States declared that assisted suicide was not a constitutional
right but years later in 2006, the Supreme Court decided that such severe cases should be up to the
individual states. This ruling contributes to Oregon s Death With Dignity law, which was actually in
place since 1997 but in 2007, some 46 people committed suicide in Oregon under the law (

world, and whenever someone helped their friend or told the truth, it grew. But the white elephant

When Romeo and Juliet are found dead in the Capulet crypt, everyone rushes to the scene of the
crime. The Prince asks who is responsible for this tragedy, and Friar Lawrence steps forward, finally
coming to term with his part in the matter. I am the greatest, able to do least, / Yet most suspected, as
the time and place / Doth make against me of this direful murder; / And here I stand, both to impeach

Lawrence has been helping Romeo and Juliet. At first he believed he was helping to reunite the two
families by bringing the two together, but as things got worse, he was trying his best to protect the two
and help them be together safely. Only when the Prince calls upon Friar Lawrence to reflect on his
actions does he begin to see how much wrong he has done. Although throughout the play some parts
of his plans have gone out of his control leaving him subject to fate, he also brings about the fate of
Romeo and Juliet. In this final moment in the crypt, he realizes that their death was ultimately his
fault, that all along he was a servant to the bad king inside him instead of the

The first is that international law traditionally does not encroach on matters that are solely the internal
affairs of a sovereign state (although recent developments such as the responsibility to protect is
starting to undermine this traditional approach). The second is because at the Hague Conference of
1899 there was disagreement between the Great Powers who considered francs tireurs to be unlawful
combatants subject to execution on capture and smaller states who maintained that they should be
considered lawful combatants. The dispute resulted in a compromise wording being included in the
Hague Conventions known as the Martens Clause after the diplomat who drafted the clause.[11]
The Third Geneva Convention, as well as the other Geneva Conventions, are oriented to conflict

Othello Illusion Vs Reality
Illusion vs. Reality
When thought up of the idea of illusions multiple things come to mind: magic tricks, mind games, and
so much more. With such positive outlooks on illusions it s difficult to see how the use of them could
possibly be used in a negative way. Within the play Othello, Shakespeare plays with the idea of
unreliable reality to seek his revenge. Through the misfortunes of lies and gullibility the
misunderstanding of illusion and reality soon lead to the tragic downfall of many.
As soon as the play takes off Iago lets the readers know his true intentions. He states to Roderigo that
he is going to be the Moorships biggest mistake after he found out Othello chose Cassio to be his
Lieutenant (I. i. 35). From this information it is gathered that Iago seeks revenge and the use of
illusion vs. reality will make his plans all the more believable. After seen Iago s true colors it s iconic
to see how many times he is called by the name Honest Iago . This name is an illusion in itself
knowing he is anything but honest. Cassio even goes on to say I never/knew/a Florentine more kind
and honest (III. i. 43 45). Cassio truly believes his words are humble but only the readers can

Beijing s fear for regime change, particularly since the IAEA inspectors visited the Parchin military

Nevertheless, China also had to maintain stable relations with the U.S. in order to keep a favorable
macro environment for economic growth, resulting in a balancing strategy to maintain good relations
with all parties concerned.
However, not only Iran s nuclear activities catered for suspicion among the international community.
Ahmadinejad s exclamation, to wipe Israel off the map particularly affected the U.S. approach, with
Israel being the U.S. most important ally in the region. Even though China was forced to ban military
trade with Israel in the beginning of 2005 due to U.S. pressure and with the same reason it already
happened during the late 1990 s, Ahmadinejad s choice of words made China increasingly critical,
stating that Israel s sovereignty has to be respected and that it would not tolerate anything that could
alter the stability in the Middle East. At the same time, China progressively opened its borders for the
Gulf states, resulting in four rounds of negotiations in the beginning of 2006 regarding customs, trade
remedies and trade of goods. The results of these negotiations, a reduction of import tariffs and
accelerating oil relations, made China increasingly independent from its trade with Iran, but
maintained a close and supportive relationship to it. Consequently, China slowly replaced the United

The Exponents Of Margret Thatcherism
A: Investigation Thatcherism is defined as the conviction politics, economic, social policy and
political style of the British Conservative politician and Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher. An
exponent or supporter of Thatcherism is called a Thatcherite. During Thatcher s reign the economy
fell and unemployment rose. There were outcries from the British public against her methods of
governance. Thatcher was criticised for her blatant lack of sympathy for the poor. However, Margret
Thatcher is regarded as one of the most influential leaders in recent history. Margaret Thatcher was
born as Margaret Hilda Roberts on October 13th, 1925 in Grantham, England. She was introduced to
politics at an early age by her father who was a member of the town council. Thatcher was an

This clause caused a huge controversy as it stated that a local authority shall not promote the teaching
in any maintained school of the acceptability of homosexuality as a pretended family relationship .
This encouraged prejudice against gay people and a discriminative society emerged. Prime Minister,
David Cameron, proposes that gay marriage be legalised since the modern British public are outraged
by this particular policy. However, while many of Thatcher s policies were condemned by the British
public, there are some that have remained in the constitution. Thatcher is an influential leader in recent
history; despite her reign being called near tyrannical, her methods, reasoning, eloquence, and stance
on political viewpoints have made her political persona an idealised role model to many leaders after
her reign, particularly female leaders. Her quotes have been used in speeches by other leaders around

Research Method And Design Of Tim Hortons Essay
Research Method and Design Tim Hortons is a Canadian multinational fast food restaurant chain and
it is famous for coffee and doughnuts. As of June 30, 2016, Tim Hortons had more than 4,464 system
wide restaurants located in Canada, the United States and the Middle East. I chose this company
because I love their grilled Panini and fruit smoothies are cheap in terms of price than other brands
like Starbucks or Second Cup. In addition, I want to know how Tim Hortons decided to adopt foreign
worker program to provide an opportunity for foreign workers to work for the company and how
foreign workers play the role in the company. I also want to know how foreign worker program can
benefit both the company and the worker and how this can become an opportunity for Tim Hortons to
do business in different countries. One day, I was shopping at southgate mall and Tim Hortons were
about to open their new location inside the mall. I decided to call Tim Hortons store at southgate mall
and I happened to talk to the store supervisor. I explained what my research paper was about and
asked the permission if I could ask some questions to the supervisor and he was willing to answer my
questions. As a supervisor, he usually manage people, assign them to the tasks they need to
accomplish, do cash out and accomplish food safety precautions especially with Tim Hortons soup and

The Business Internet. The Internet Is Constantly Developing.
The Business Internet
The Internet is constantly developing. From four computers back in the early 70 s to an uncountable
number today, the Internet has extreme power and has changed the world. In recent years, Internet
growth has been expanding more rapidly than the government can understand. The laws and
regulations of a month ago are no longer useful today. The government either has to move quicker in
deciding outcomes pertaining to the Internet or has to give up control entirely. Businesses are making
large technological advances that involve the Internet and are being held up by government decisions.
Commercialization of the Internet brings in new technologies that are essential to growth.

All of these developments in the field of computing continued to grow. As the Personal Computer was

As Internet needs continued to grow, more ISPs, Internet Service Providers, popped up. Currently
there are a countless number of ISPs, but people want more (Brown 2).
In order to meet these needs, different types of Internet services were born. Some services, called
Bulletin Board Services, are not directly connected to the Internet. These servers are just local

Grievances Of The Declaration Of Independence
The Declaration of Independence was written to declare that America would be free and that it would
no longer be under the rule of King George III. The declaration has a total of twenty seven grievances
which are complaints towards the King and the government of Britain. One of the many grievances
stated in the declaration is that He has kept among us, in times of peace, Standing Armies without the
Consent of our legislature . This whole process began towards the beginning of 1763. After the Seven
Years War ended in February 1763, the king did not withdraw the British troops from America.
Instead, he left a lot of the troops in America forcing the colonists to house and support them.
According to colonialhall.com, the troops stayed in America in order to enforce the laws; especially
with the new taxes that were about to take place. Although the troops did help by protecting colonists
and enforcing the laws, it was unnecessary for them to stay. The colonists knew how to defend
themselves so there was really no reason for this. It seemed that the King did this, not just to enforce
laws, but also to make them fearful so that they would surrender to him. Although the Kings intentions
were to get the colonists to appease to him, that did not happen. This only made the colonists fear that
they would lose all their rights and it made them angry with the King. Jefferson wrote that if the King
did indeed have the right to keep standing armies in the colonies during times of

Roald Dahl s The Landlady
Roald Dahl s realistic fiction story, The LandLady, takes place at a bed and breakfast owned by the
landlady where she also lives. Billy Weaver, a seventeen year old guy, was looking for a place to stay,
and he walks by the landlady s house. He was going to keep walking when a sign suddenly caught his
eye and next thing he knew, he was ringing the doorbell. By using sentence variety with lots of
description, Roald Dahl creates the lesson that it is essential to be aware and conscientious of one s
immediate surroundings.
Throughout the story, the lack of awareness and being conscientious is a central issue that affects all of
the characters. Bill Weaver lacks an awareness of what is going on throughout the story and he is not

Throughout the story, Billy is not aware and conscientious of his immediate surroundings. When Billy
is walking down the street and sees the landlady s sign, he seems to be drawn into the house. BED
AND BREAKFAST, it said. BED AND BREAKFAST, BED AND BREAKFAST. Each word was like
a large black eye staring at him through the glass. These words are holding him compelling him
forcing him to stay where he was and not to walk away from that house (2). This does not even make
Billy have the slightest doubt about anything. Dahl uses the sensory detail of sight to draw in the
reader to the sign as it did to Billy when Billy keeps repeating what the sign said over and over again.
Dahl not only uses sensory detail as a craft to develop his ideas, but he also uses sentence variety with
lots of description through his story. Dahl describing how Billy is being drawn to go to the house
shows his craft for developing his ideas. Billy found himself automatically starting forward into the
house. The compulsion or, more accurately, the desire to follow after her into that house was
extraordinarily strong (2). The way Dahl describes how Billy is feeling the desire to follow the lady
really helps the reader imagine and almost feel the urge that he is. With Dahl s

Colonial American Identity
In Britain s eyes, Colonial America was nothing but another piece of land that earned them money, but
as it began to be acknowledged by other powerful countries for its self sufficient lifestyle, it shaped an
identity, ultimately becoming the strong, independent nation, it is today. However, it was anything but
easy for America to form in the first place. From 1765 to 1783, the American Revolution took place
and was overall, the process used to overthrow the oppressive British and purge them from America.
Britain s establishment of harsh policies concerning many freedoms, political ideologies, and
economic rights obligated the colonists to fight for their independence. The American Colonies
thought that they were ready and able to create a society with the power of unity, supported by
democracy and economic prosperities. The American revolution was eventually instigated by the
identity of American colonists of which evolved through the formation of unity, political, and
economic influences.
It was necessary that the settlements set aside their disparities unite amid the French and Indian War
when they were aligning with the British. In 1754, the first year of the French and Indian War,
Benjamin Franklin s acclaimed Join or Die cartoon was distributed in Philadelphia. The drawing,
which demonstrates the colonies as a feature of a cut up snaked, truly prompted unification. Unity

Glasnost and the Political Context of Gorbachev s Reforms
Did Gorbachev implement Glasnost with the aim of turning the Soviet Union into a democratic
capitalist economy?
A: Plan of the Investigation
Did Gorbachev implement Glasnost with the aim of turning the Soviet Union into a democratic
capitalist economy? Thesis: Glasnost was a means to achieve Gorbachev s broader political reforms,
however, these reforms did not include the installation of a democratic, capitalist economy. At the time
Gorbachev implemented Glasnost, he intended for the Communist Party to remain the only party and
for the Government to own most of the major enterprises.
The democratization, economic liberalization, and eventual collapse of the Soviet Union is commonly
attributed to Mikhail Gorbachev s Perestroika and Glasnost reforms during the period of 1985 1991.
This purpose of these reforms is still a trenchant question as the countries of the old Soviet Union,
particular Russia, are being pressured to further liberalize their economies.
This study will examine Gorbachev s understanding of the Glasnost policy and the role of Glasnost in
Gorbachev s larger political reform program with the help of the Gorbachev Factor, by Archie Brown,
and Gorbachev s Glasnost, by Joseph Gibbs.

  • 2. Comparing Hume And Popper s Views On Induction In this paper I will be utilizing Hume s writings to point out his views and compare his views with Popper s views on induction. The first thing I am going to be doing is clarifying the problem of induction that I will be discussing. Secondarily, Hume s issues with induction will be outlined, and Popper s proposed solution will be detailed. Finally, the assertions that I have made, and my views on both the issue and the solution is going to be explicitly laid out. What are the primary elements of induction? Induction, is the name given to ... deductively invalid but allegedly good arguments. (22, Ladyman) Enumerative induction is where we infer some law or theory is true for the future after making some number of observations that confirm ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... (51, Ladyman) Popper s method of devising a solution to the induction problem is by arguing that inductive inferences do not detract from the justification of scientific knowledge. Specifically, Popper argues that scientific knowledge is entirely independent of all inductive reasoning; this response is heavily based on the concept that science is founded in the falsification of theories. Ladyman comments that Popper s conceptualization of scientific knowledge is entirely deductive due to the inferences of falsified instances. (69, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Identification of Unknown Ketones Essay Purpose: The purpose of this experiment was to identify one ketone with Thin Layer Chromatography and one using NMR spectrometry. We will do this by making 2, 4 a DNPH derivative and checking the melting points. Theory: By Using specific methods of compounds detection, we can match an unknown compound with a known compound because similar compounds will display similar characteristics. In this experiment, identifications of the unknown ketone was accomplished using thin layer chromatography, melting point, and NMR spectrometry. Thin layer chromatography is very quick but sensitive way of determining the components of a mixture or a specific compound from a list of knowns. This method is the one which was utilized in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Next, I observed my Proton NMR which had only one peak. The multiplicity is six. Therefore, I have six hydrogens. Using this information, I was able to conclude that my unknown is 2 propanone. Discussion/Conclusion This experiment was done to identify one ketone with Thin Layer Chromatography and one using nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometry. When using Thin Layer Chromatography, I was able to determine my unknown by observing my slides and seeing that the spots of my unknown are most like those of 2 heptanone in height and size. Furthermore, I calculated my Rf values and determined that my Rf value of Unknown K (.5) was most near my Rf value of 2 heptanone (.51). Finally, comparing the derivative melting points of these two substances confirms that 2 heptanone is my unknown. The derivative melting point of 2 heptanone is 89 while my unknown was 87. When using nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometry, I had unknown A. With this unknown, I had two peaks on my CNMR which told me I had one carbon on both sides of the line symmetry. Also, on my HNMR I had one peak with a multiplicity of six, therefore, I had six hydrogens. Using this information I was able to conclude that my unknown as was 2 propanone. Furthermore, in this experiment we learned that NMR takes advantage of the magnetic properties of the 1H and 13C nuclei. We are not concerned with 12C because it does not have a magnetic ... West Nile fever, indicated by fever, headache, nausea etc, can develop in approximately 20% of the infected people5. In rare cases, less than 1% of disease ridden individuals can actually develop more serious conditions like meningitis, encephalitis, and acute flaccid paralysis5. • 8. The Suicide Of A Patient Essay The suicide of a patient suffering from an incurable disease, effected by the taking of lethal drugs provided by a doctor for this purpose, is the dictionary definition of assisted suicide, or assisted death. Much debate has taken place over whether or not this should be a right of the terminally ill, and whether a doctor can grant that wish. Although modern medicine has brought a multitude of benefits to humanity, it cannot relieve the pain and suffering associated with the dying process. Kate Pickert, for TIME Magazine, notes that when people hear the term euthanasia they think of the battle in the 1990 s, featuring Jack Doctor Death Kevorkian. Slowly, countries, or at least individual states, have chosen to declare assisted suicide as legal or illegal based on a variety of reasons but religion being the most prominent reason. The idea of assisted suicide is considered illegal in considering the Biblical Commandment, which states Thou Shalt Not Kill. Despite this, some christian societies are considering the idea. Australia legalized it in 1995 but unusually, recanted that law in 1997. Also in 1997, the United States declared that assisted suicide was not a constitutional right but years later in 2006, the Supreme Court decided that such severe cases should be up to the individual states. This ruling contributes to Oregon s Death With Dignity law, which was actually in place since 1997 but in 2007, some 46 people committed suicide in Oregon under the law ( ... Grievances Of The Declaration Of Independence The Declaration of Independence was written to declare that America would be free and that it would no longer be under the rule of King George III. The declaration has a total of twenty seven grievances which are complaints towards the King and the government of Britain. One of the many grievances stated in the declaration is that He has kept among us, in times of peace, Standing Armies without the Consent of our legislature . This whole process began towards the beginning of 1763. After the Seven Years War ended in February 1763, the king did not withdraw the British troops from America. Instead, he left a lot of the troops in America forcing the colonists to house and support them. According to colonialhall.com, the troops stayed in America in order to enforce the laws; especially with the new taxes that were about to take place. Although the troops did help by protecting colonists and enforcing the laws, it was unnecessary for them to stay. The colonists knew how to defend themselves so there was really no reason for this. It seemed that the King did this, not just to enforce laws, but also to make them fearful so that they would surrender to him. Although the Kings intentions were to get the colonists to appease to him, that did not happen. This only made the colonists fear that they would lose all their rights and it made them angry with the King.
