Road infrastructure solutions can play an important part in helping cities become safer, greener, and smarter. Governments throughout the world have initiated plans to deploy technologies for Smart City, traffic management, Intelligent Transportation Systems, and road safety projects to mitigate the challenges faced due to rapid urbanization.3 Road safety represents measures that can be taken to reduce the risk of accidents and fatalities for road users (cyclists, motorists, pedestrians, vehicle passengers, and public transport passengers) in the road network of built-up urban streets, non-built-up rural roads, and major highways.

A low cost method of real time pavement condition data sharing to expedite maintenance intervention Pavements for roads in cities and highways are degraded with potholes, cracking, and rutting distresses. There is a strong need to identify these locations and sections with undesired longitudinal roughness quickly and accurately every year. Traditionally, expensive standalone survey vehicles for roughness measurements and more expensive multi-function vehicles are employed by highway agencies or through contract services, which most cities and local agencies can’t afford. The primary objective of this study is to describe a low cost method to collect essential pavement condition data and share real time to expedite maintenance intervention needs. This facilitates rapid identification of pavement sections with undesired longitudinal roughness and local defects. This paper discusses the impact of social media, crowd sourcing, and advances in cheaper accurate motion sensors and cloud server data processing. These tools make it possible to develop easy-to-use low cost methods, which are affordable by city public work and smaller road agencies.

A CAR POOLING MODEL WITH CMGV AND CMGNV STOCHASTIC VEHICLE TRAVEL TIMES

Carpooling (also car-sharing, ride-sharing, lift-sharing), is the sharing of car journeys so that more than one person travels in a car. It helps to resolve a variety of problems that continue to plague urban areas, ranging from energy demands and traffic congestion to environmental pollution. Most of the existing method used stochastic disturbances arising from variations in vehicle travel times for carpooling. However it doesn’t deal with the unmet demand with uncertain demand of the vehicle for car pooling. To deal with this the proposed system uses Chance constrained formulation/Programming (CCP) approach of the problem with stochastic demand and travel time parameters, under mild assumptions on the distribution of stochastic parameters; and relates it with a robust optimization approach. Since real problem sizes can be large, it could be difficult to find optimal solutions within a reasonable period of time. Therefore solution algorithm using tabu heuristic solution approach is developed to solve the model. Therefore, we constructed a stochastic carpooling model that considers the in- fluence of stochastic travel times. The model is formulated as an integer multiple commodity network flow problem. Since real problem sizes can be large, it could be difficult to find optimal solutions within a reasonable period of time.

In this workshop Carole will draw on material from her ground-breaking book, Neuroscience for Project Success: why people behave as they do to answer both questions. “We like to think our decision making is completely rational. However, once there's an element of uncertainty, conscious assessments are only part of the story. Two other inputs, both subconscious and driven by our innate need to survive, have a big impact. One, automatic reactions driven by cognitive biases, gets plenty of airtime. The other input, our raw visceral emotions might be scary to talk about and less understood - but that’s not a reason to pretend they don’t exist!” This interactive workshop will draw on material from Carole’s book, Neuroscience for Project Success: why people behave as they do, published by APM in 2022. Kai-Fu Lee predicted that AI would change the world more than anything in the history of humanity – even electricity. It would disrupt how we live and work, how we operate our businesses, the core products and services on offer and the way in which we build technology. However, in 2024 the impact of AI can no longer be discussed in future tense. With Microsoft copilot now publicly available, the change is already upon us. There is no consultation period or ‘unsubscribe’ button. Project management professionals are likely to be asked to manage AI projects - and we are expected to skilfully use AI in our daily work lives.
