Sermon at the Haynes Street church of Christ on May 18, 2014. Topic: "Belonging to a Jealous God" Preacher: Tyler Hall (http://slideshare.net/tylercshall
Sin has consequences according to religious texts. It causes death by turning people away from love and God. Sin destroys people from within because without love they cannot live. The wages of sin is death but God offers eternal life. The Old Testament viewed sin as missing God's intentions, being depraved in character, and rebelling against relationships. Committing sin kills the soul by making people lose sight of God. Sin can spiral out of control, make people feel unwell by stirring negative emotions, and become addictive by destroying personal relationships. Losing the sense of sin hardens the conscience.
The document discusses choosing love over hate. It argues that darkness comes from hatred in any form, and the enemy's tactic is to divide people along lines of race, class, gender, politics and more. While acknowledging fears and struggles, it encourages treating others as you wish to be treated, choosing not to hate or demonize others, and aligning with heaven by being a voice of hope that builds people up.
The document discusses whether Christianity is intolerant. It analyzes Jesus' responses to six key questions and compares them to other world religions. While Christianity teaches forgiveness, kindness, honesty and virtue, it is intolerant of sin, false gods, and false gospels because Jesus claimed to be the only way to God. So Christianity cannot tolerate anything that contradicts Jesus and his teachings. The document argues that either Christianity is completely true based on Jesus' identity and actions, or it is not true at all.
The document discusses the meaning and teachings about sin from both the Old and New Testaments. It defines sin as a transgression against divine law and moral evil from a religious perspective. The Bible teaches that sin originated with Adam and Eve and separated humans from God. While some views of human depravity differ on how much sin corrupts human nature, the Bible says all have sinned. Sin is only forgiven through Jesus Christ's sacrifice. The doctrines about sin help people understand God and his will.
Jesus taught his disciples, opening his mouth to teach them many things that brought change. He taught a change of priorities, thoughts, and hopes. Specifically, he taught that the kingdom of heaven should be a top priority, our example is important, and true treasure is deeper than what we think. He brought a fresh, new meaning to the eternal word unlike the scribes, astonishing crowds with his authority and teaching of changed life.

The document discusses perspectives on homosexuality from biblical times to today. It summarizes Romans 1:24-27 which describes how humans violate God's created order and exchange natural relations for unnatural ones due to idolatry and sin. The document argues that same-sex attraction signifies humanity is out of joint with God's design and all people equally fall short of God's glory.

This document discusses the topic of kindness. It defines kindness as good will and benevolence that delights in helping others. Some key points made include:
- Acts of kindness include caring about others and making efforts to help them through both words and deeds.
- People should prepare their heart with charity and do good works to demonstrate kindness to others, as Jesus exemplified.
- God requires His people to be kind to others and set a good example, just as He Himself is kind. We should strive to help others as we would want help ourselves.
This prayer calls for grace and confidence in facing life's trials, like Joseph who was sold into slavery but became a blessing to others. It references Luke 6:27-38, where Jesus teaches his followers to love their enemies and bless those who curse them. The document discusses how Jesus calls his followers not to a rule book but to cultivate an attitude of generous, others-focused love that reflects God. It includes quotes emphasizing practicing extraordinary generosity towards others, including enemies, and governing with kindness like God.
This document summarizes John Owen's teachings on mortifying sin in believers based on Romans 8:13. It outlines what mortification is not, such as pretending sin is removed or resolving to never sin again. Mortification is the habitual weakening of sin through a constant fight against it by recognizing sin seriously and learning its tactics. The Holy Spirit alone can sufficiently empower believers to mortify sin by bringing the cross of Christ into their hearts through faith. To mortify sin requires obedience, trust in Christ's sufficiency, and seeking the Holy Spirit's help to fully convince the heart of sin and reveal Christ's relief.
This document defines and discusses the concept of sin from theological and biblical perspectives. It begins by defining sin as an offense against reason, truth, and conscience that fails to love God and neighbor and injures human solidarity. It then explores concepts of sin in the Old and New Testaments, dimensions of sin, degrees of sin including mortal and venial, internal and external sins, sins of omission and commission, capital sins, sources of sin, and the effects of sin. The document provides a comprehensive overview of the nature and understanding of sin.
This document discusses how one's image of God transforms them. It uses examples to show how images of God have evolved from more selfish views to more inclusive views that love all people and the earth. The key point is that having the mind of Christ means emptying oneself of personal concerns and allowing the Holy Spirit to fill you with care for the well-being of others, even those you disagree with or find unlikable. Following Jesus requires continuing to evolve one's understanding of God to be more loving and inclusive.
The document summarizes a passage from Galatians about living freely by faith rather than being bound to rules and laws. It discusses how legalism robs Christians of their spiritual riches and freedom found in Christ by trying to make them responsible for their sins again. The legalists want believers to think they are missing out and need to follow the Law to be more spiritual, but Paul says that nothing can be added to what is found in Christ alone.
The document discusses racism and prejudice from a Christian perspective. It defines different types of racism from avoiders to reconcilers. It also discusses why God hates racism and prejudice, noting that he created all races equally, prejudice shows a lack of wisdom, and racism disobeys the commandment to love your neighbor. The document advises readers to look at people as God does based on character not appearance, listen to everyone with respect, and love people as Jesus loved. It emphasizes that in Christianity, one's primary identity is belonging to God's family, where nationality, race, or other attributes do not matter and all are equal citizens through Christ.
The document defines kindness as gentleness and goodness expressed through deeds of grace, tenderness, and compassion. It notes that kindness is a fruit of the spirit according to Galatians 5:22-23. God calls believers to emulate His kindness to all people, whether grateful or ungrateful, through compassionate words and self-sacrificial actions done with humility.
The document discusses the grace and mercy of Jesus Christ. It notes that Jesus provides strength to the weak, not the strong, and that God chooses to use what is weak in order to shame what is strong. Even when we are faithful, our faith comes from Jesus rather than our own inherent characteristics. The grace of Jesus covers all past and future sins. There is enough faith, love, and mercy in Jesus to last a lifetime. It is impossible to exhaust God's grace. The document encourages looking at one's own sin rather than judging others and moving from examining others' sins to examining one's own sins with the help of God's grace.
What does it mean to be made in God's imageMyWonderStudio
The document discusses what it means for humans to be made in God's image based on Genesis 1:26-27. Some key aspects of being made in God's image include having a spirit, self-awareness, the ability to reason and use language, and being set above other creatures and given dominion over the Earth. Being made in God's image means that all humans have intrinsic worth and value to God, regardless of characteristics, and that we should treat ourselves and others with respect.
God makes people right with him through faith in Jesus Christ. All people have sinned and fall short of God's standards, but God offers forgiveness as a free gift of his grace when people believe in Jesus. Jesus' death paid the price for sins, and through faith in him believers are made free from sin's power and penalty. Having faith in Christ results in peace with God, enjoyment of his grace, and the hope of sharing in his glory.
This document discusses the sixth principle of a 12-step program, which is to evaluate relationships and make amends for harm done to others. It provides guidance on admitting harm, making a list of those affected, getting encouragement from a sponsor, making amends at the right time without justification or expectations, and finding freedom and peace through completing this principle. The document encourages prayer, keeping lists, and relying on a support team for accountability.
There is a platform we each step onto at the start of every day, which is called the platform of exposure to sin. Our memory verse this week says it all.
Temptations are Always Stalking Us
The document discusses the key Catholic teachings around death, judgment, heaven, purgatory, and hell. It states that through faith in God's promise, believers trust in eternal life. At death, one undergoes particular judgment and is deemed worthy of heaven, hell, or the purification of purgatory. The general Last Judgment will occur when Jesus returns, to judge all and separate the righteous from the unrighteous. Eternal punishment of hell awaits those who die in mortal sin without repenting.
What is God Like? Brad Jersak introduces his latest book 'A More Christlike God'Paul Milbank
What is God like? 'Believers' and atheists alike often carry and finally reject the toxic images of God in their own hearts. Whether our notions of 'god' are personal projections or inherited traditions, author and theologian Brad Jersak proposes a radical reassessment, arguing for A More Christlike God: a More Beautiful Gospel. If Christ is "the image of the invisible God, the radiance of God's glory and exact representation of God's likeness," what if we conceived of God as completely Christlike—the perfect Incarnation of self-giving, radically forgiving, co-suffering love? The implications could be surprising and wonderful!
The document discusses that Christians are in a real spiritual battle against Satan. It outlines that Satan is our enemy who seeks to destroy us, and that we are up against unseen spiritual forces. However, the document emphasizes that through faith in God, every Christian can achieve victory over Satan and the world.
This document discusses the concept of repentance from sin as the first step towards receiving salvation and abundant life through Jesus Christ. It defines repentance as recognizing, feeling sorry for, and turning away from one's sins completely. The document outlines repentance as involving the intellectual recognition of sin, emotional feelings of guilt, and an act of will to change direction away from sin. It states that repentance requires involvement of one's entire life and intentions for the future. All people, both those who have never believed and Christians who have grown cold, are called to repentance in order to experience God's saving grace and the benefits of forgiveness.
The document defines and discusses the concept of sin from biblical and theological perspectives. It covers:
- Sin defined as an offense against God through disobedience, rejection of love, and harmful actions.
- Sin discussed in the Old and New Testaments as breaking relationship with God and others through pride, sensuality, lack of belief, and lawlessness.
- Sin proliferates and can be mortal (separating one from God) or venial (diminishing divine life). Conversion and reconciliation require admitting sin and cultivating love.
This document is an apprentices and trainees report from BreeCS for a construction site example. It summarizes that there are a total of 8 enrolled apprentices and trainees, including 4 direct apprentices, 3 shared apprentices, and 1 trainee. The report provides further details about each apprentice and trainee, including their name, gender, start date, job title, and contractor/department.

10 Most Expensive & Least Expensive Cars to Insure in 2014Cost U Less Direct
This document discusses the most and least expensive vehicles to insure based on a study of 2009-2011 models. The top 10 most expensive vehicles to insure include high-performance luxury cars like the Ferrari California, Maserati Granturismo, and Porsche Panamera Turbo due to their high repair costs from accidents. The 10 least expensive vehicles to insure are trucks and SUVs like the Chevrolet Tahoe and Jeep Wrangler that don't encourage speeding. For less expensive vehicles under $30,000, fast sports cars driven by young males have higher insurance costs. The study also found smaller economy cars have more personal injury claims, meaning they may be less safe in an accident.

The feedback received on the trailer, billboard, and magazine for the scripted reality soap provided useful insights. Respondents correctly identified the target audience as teens aged 16-25 and the genre as a scripted reality or soap. However, some did not fully understand what the show was about from just the promotional materials. Suggestions to make the soap more appealing included showing more characters, storylines, and using multiple songs in the trailer rather than just one. Overall, the promotional products linked well together and achieved some of their goals, but could be improved by providing more clarity on the show's content and characters.

Devotional based on numerous verses (regarding sin)
The Cycle of Sin is:
1. Deception (Lie)
2. Desire (Sinful Temptation)
3. Disobedience
4. Death (Spiritual, Physical, Eternal-Second Death)
Contrast between those tempted by the Devil:
1. Temptation of Jesus
2. Temptation of Eve
The document discusses the origins of atheism and critiques fundamental Christian views of God. It argues that the fundamental view of God as an angry, vengeful deity who kills sinners is not supported by the Bible and is responsible for the rise of atheism. The document asserts that God, as revealed through Jesus, is a god of love rather than wrath and violence. It concludes that the fundamental Christian conception of God should be rejected in favor of understanding God based on how he is portrayed through Christ and in scripture.
The document discusses apostasy, or turning away from God. It provides examples from the Bible of people who committed apostasy, such as Judas and Demas. Apostasy is possible as long as people remain in the flesh due to free will. Constant watchfulness, prayer, and holy living are needed to prevent falling away from God's grace. Causes of apostasy include failing to meet expectations, persecution, worldliness, and false teaching. The results are loss of faith, assurance, fellowship, and hope. Prevention requires faithfully following God's word through love, growth, worship, and resisting sin. Repentance and confession are important if one does sin.
The document summarizes Ezekiel's visions and symbolic actions. It describes Ezekiel receiving visions of God's glory that overwhelm him and are followed by instructions. The visions predict coming judgment on Israel for their idolatry and wickedness. Ezekiel performs symbolic actions, like acting out the siege of Jerusalem, to represent God's coming punishment of exile and the removal of His glory from the temple. The document examines Ezekiel's message of warning the people and holding religious and political authorities accountable.
This document provides a summary and analysis of Psalm 79. It begins by providing historical context for the psalm, noting it was written after the destruction of the temple in 586 BC by Nebuchadnezzar. The summary then analyzes the psalm in three parts: 1) Judah is defeated and the consequences of turning away from God, 2) A prayer for vengeance against enemies while acknowledging punishment is justified, and 3) A promise to praise God if delivered or regardless of the outcome. Key lessons highlighted include never forgetting God's vengeance, that God determines the appropriate response, and ensuring one's conduct makes God visible.
In looking at what sin is we began by reviewing why Jesus came then looked at a definition of sin, how sin flows from idolatry and that the end result is God is denied His glory. We finished by summarizing why we need Jesus adding our understanding of sin.

This document summarizes a chapter about God disciplining believers. It discusses how God disciplines verbally through prophets and Jesus' rebukes, and corporally through punishments in the Bible. God's discipline proves his love and confirms our relationship with him. It accomplishes correcting faults, curbing temperament, and separating us for God's purpose. Believers can respond by despising, fainting under, or accepting discipline. The chapter urges perseverance by noting we cannot reverse decisions at Judgment, the cross is effective for dependence, and the church will last into eternity. It lists things that prevent faithfulness like lack of love, self-control, respect for leaders, reinventing Jesus, conflicting doctrines, and
The document discusses qualities of spiritual leadership. It examines leadership as demonstrated by God and examples in the Old and New Testaments. It outlines many spiritual qualities of a leader, such as knowing God's will, having a heavenly mindset, being an example, being humble and a servant, and having qualities like integrity, trustworthiness, and compassion. It also discusses how Paul looked for qualities like being a teacher, soldier, athlete, and student of the Word in leaders. Qualities of Nehemiah's leadership are provided, such as knowing God's Word, taking initiative, having concern for God's people, and being prepared for opportunities.
Grace is God's answer to sin and is not a license to sin. Grace meets the problem of sin that was introduced in the world nearly 2,000 years ago and can do so today. Grace is the cure for, not the cause of, condemnation. It excludes boasting and does not free us from responsibility or acts of obedience, as shown through examples like Noah and the Ephesians. Christians who continue willfully sinning insult the Spirit of grace and fail to receive it.
Bully - Christianity and the Culture of BullyingRodney Drury
The document discusses bullying from a Christian perspective. It defines bullying as negative verbal or physical behavior done with the intention of upsetting or manipulating someone, which God would not approve of. It outlines four main types of bullying: verbal, physical, relational, and cyber. It then examines biblical stories involving Joseph, Moses, David, Jesus, and a group of women to draw lessons about overcoming bullying through humility, faith over fear, sacrificing for others, doing God's will, and resisting evil urges like jealousy. Finally, it provides advice such as living humbly, using spiritual gifts to empower others, and involving authorities to address bullying.
The document discusses several topics related to Christianity:
1) The process of salvation involves realization of sin, repentance, confession, baptism, and growing in faith in Christ, which brings feelings of joy, freedom, security, and a new identity and motivation.
2) There are many Christian denominations due to divisions dating back to early church, caused by human factors like traditions and interpretations; the right denomination follows God's word and practices of early Christians.
3) The Bible presents the relationship of husband and wife in the context of creation order, the fall, and redemption through Christ; it does not imply the superiority of husbands over wives.
This document provides guidance on properly interpreting and understanding Scripture through three "dials":
1. Coming with humility and allowing Scripture to shape us rather than our own preconceptions.
2. Understanding the historical and literary context of the time as well as the author's intended meaning.
3. Studying theology, particularly the character of God as described in the Bible - including attributes such as love, wrath, mercy, etc. - and ensuring our understanding aligns with the God portrayed in Scripture.
God possesses many attributes that can be described as communicable, such as spirituality, knowledge, wisdom, love, mercy, holiness, and righteousness. These attributes are explained in the document, with Scripture references provided for each one. For example, God's spirituality means He exists without a physical body, His knowledge means He fully knows all things actual and possible, and His love refers to His eternal self-giving nature towards others. The document provides an overview of many key communicable attributes of God's character.

Lucid Dreaming: Understanding the Risks and Benefits
The ability to control one's dreams or for the dreamer to be aware that he or she is dreaming. This process, called lucid dreaming, has some potential risks as well as many fascinating benefits. However, many people are hesitant to try it initially for fear of the potential dangers. This article aims to clarify these concerns by exploring both the risks and benefits of lucid dreaming.
The Benefits of Lucid Dreaming
Lucid dreaming allows a person to take control of their dream world, helping them overcome their fears and eliminate nightmares. This technique is particularly useful for mental health. By taking control of their dreams, individuals can face challenging scenarios in a controlled environment, which can help reduce anxiety and increase self-confidence.
Addressing Common Concerns
Physical Harm in Dreams Lucid dreaming is fundamentally safe. In a lucid dream, everything is a creation of your mind. Therefore, nothing in the dream can physically harm you. Despite the vividness and realness of the dream experience, it remains entirely within your mental landscape, posing no physical danger.
Mental Health Risks Concerns about developing PTSD or other mental illnesses from lucid dreaming are unfounded. As soon as you wake up, it's clear that the events experienced in the dream were not real. On the contrary, lucid dreaming is often seen as a therapeutic tool for conditions like PTSD, as it allows individuals to reframe and manage their thoughts.
Potential Risks of Lucid Dreaming
While generally safe, lucid dreaming does come with a few risks as well:
Mixing Dream Memories with Reality Long-term lucid dreamers might occasionally confuse dream memories with real ones, creating false memories. This issue is rare and preventable by maintaining a dream journal and avoiding lucid dreaming about real-life people or places too frequently.
Escapism Using lucid dreaming to escape reality can be problematic if it interferes with your daily life. While it is sometimes beneficial to escape and relieve the stress of reality, relying on lucid dreaming for happiness can hinder personal growth and productivity.
Feeling Tired After Lucid Dreaming Some people report feeling tired after lucid dreaming. This tiredness is not due to the dreams themselves but often results from not getting enough sleep or using techniques that disrupt sleep patterns. Taking breaks and ensuring adequate sleep can prevent this.
Mental Exhaustion Lucid dreaming can be mentally taxing if practiced excessively without breaks. It’s important to balance lucid dreaming with regular sleep to avoid mental fatigue.
Lucid dreaming is safe and beneficial if done with caution. It has many benefits, such as overcoming fear and improving mental health, and minimal risks. There are many resources and tutorials available for those interested in trying it.
