Editor's Notes
Retained 5 commercial Purchased 4 heifers from the Purebred team at $1050Avg weight = 1000 lbs
-we first went to Soderglen sale didn’t buy bulls, prices were to high average went for 6,200.-we had it narrowed down to the top 7 when we went to the sale, then from there we narrowed it down to the top 3, all which went higher then our price range. -we bid on 2 black sim and 1 black max at soderglen-we went to the Lewis’ sale we each picked our top ten, then went down to top five from there.-we bought 3 bulls 2 from the list 1 that was picked while at the sale-they were black sims, they stood out and their EPD’s fit what we were looking for in the bulls.-we had a limit of 15,00 went over buy 600, but had a volume discount and only paid 200 over.
We decided to make up SOP’s this year so that future students will have procedures to refer to when they are working with animals or need to know how to do certain procedures. Many of our existing protocols were outdated and some impractical. Our team tweaked some old ones and also created new ones. The protocols that our team tweaked or created are: tagging, vaccination, diet formulation, show feeding, barn chores, calf processing, culling, calf disease, and pre calving and post calving. Even though these protocols are now set up they are still subjected to change in future years. Example of missing scour guard for heifers
