Bednar's aphthae is an infantile oral ulcerative disease characterized by ulcers localized to the hard palate that typically occur within the first week of life. The ulcers are caused by trauma from improper feeding positions and methods, such as bottle feeding with formula that is too hot or using bottles with narrow nipple holes. The ulcers usually cause feeding intolerance and irritability in infants until resolving spontaneously with corrected feeding techniques.
