Music Video Analysis
Beyoncé ft. Jay-Z Crazy in Love
The music video for Beyoncé’s single Crazy in Love is a narrative video, with some
element of performance shown throughout. The narrative style of the video is elliptical and
enigmatic, as certain pieces of information have been left out, which keeps the audience
interested. The main theme of this video is relationships and love, which fits with the song’s
lyrics.
In the music video the characters involved are a group of female dancers, led by
Beyoncé, as in many of her other videos, therefore meeting audience expectations. Also in the
video, Jay Z who is featured on the song is also included as the only male character in the video.
In the beginning of the video, he appears separate from the rest of the characters and by the
end he is performing with her, which can be seen in the screenshot below, therefore showing a
progression in the relationship. The representation of women in this video is sexual and
provocative, due to the revealing clothing worn by the dancers and the way Beyoncé dances
with Jay Z; this is fairly conventional due the R&B genre of music.
In terms of the iconography for this music video, a lot of imagery related to love and
heartbreak is included. For example, there is a shot of a car exploding in the background of Jay
Z and Beyoncé performing, which emphasizes the intensity and power of the love. The clothing
Jay Z has on is all black jeans and top with a doggie tag and a snapback cap on this is supposed
to suggest that Jay Z is a stereotypical rap and hip hop artist. The clothing Beyoncé is wearing
throughout the music video is very revealing and this is stereotypical for Beyoncé videos and
would be what her fans would expect.
Overall the music video for Beyoncé ‘Crazy in love’ follows the conventions for an RnB
music video it is typical in what an RnB video should contain as it shows a lot of images of the
artist. This is because fans of Beyoncé aren’t just fans of her music but her as a person and so
will copy what she does in the world and this can be compared to other genres where as in rock
genre there fans will prefer a performance video as it shows a artists true emotions
