2. Definition of genre:
The dictionary definition of genre is :
A class or category of artistic endeavor having a particular form, content,
technique, or the like:
the genre of epic poetry; the genre of symphonic music.
The different genres of music allow bands and artists to be grouped together
depending on how their music sounds and what characteristics said music has.

3. Pop music
Forms and conventions of Pop music:
Common differences between pop music and other genres include the verse-chorus form and the thirty-
two-bar form, with the focus on melodies and catchy hooks, with a chorus that contrasts with the verse.
The beat and melody of the songs are normally quite simple, the lyrics of most pop songs usually focus on
themes such as love and romantic relationships , and the song itself only lasts around three and a half
minutes.
characteristics of pop music include an aim of appealing to a general audience, rather than to a particular
sub-culture or ideology, and an emphasis on craftsmanship rather than formal "artistic" qualities.

5. Analysis of Ellie Goulding, still falling for you.
So an example of a pop music video
could be Ellie Goulding’s still falling for
you.
This song is about love and relationships,
which is one of the characteristics of a
pop song, this song was obviously a colab
with a film as it shows multiple clips from
it.
The camera is on Ellie the most which is
another characteristic of the pop genre,
and, just like boy and girl bands like one
direction and little mix, is selling the brand
of her life rather than only her voice.

Forms and conventions of alternative rock:
Alternative rock music usually follows a narrative, this can be portrayed through the on screen visuals or
through the lyrics.
Some conventions of an alternative rock music video include , close ups on the band or artists, there is
normally cuts between the performance of the band/ artist and the narrative and the filming is normally is
done outside or on a stage depending on if it is following the narrative or the performance.
There is usually low key lighting which matches with the dark casual clothes that the band wears.

8. Analysis of Twenty One Pilots, Heavydirtysoul.
So we can see that this music video by Twenty One
Pilots contains many characteristics of the
alternative rock genre, like following a narrative, and
close ups on Josh Dun (the drummer) and Tyler
Joseph (the singer).
Sometimes the meanings behind Twenty One Pilots
songs are quite hard to explain as they either have
multiple meanings or mean different things to
different people.
Another characteristic that this song follows is that
of the low key lighting and dark casual clothing, we
see the band members in quite casual dress of
jeans and a plain top.

Forms and conventions of R&B:
Most slow R&B songs are usually about being in love or breaking up. These love/breakup songs are
usually performed.
Unlike most R&B songs, where the females are normally wearing minimal clothing to engage the target
audience of males, the female singers in these slow R&B songs are fully clothed, wearing bright colours to
signify a love song and darker colours to signify a breakup song.
Most R&B music videos are shot in sepia or grayscale, to soften the colours and add tone to the on screen
action.

11. Analysis of Adele, rolling in the deep.
This music video looks like it is shot in sepia as the colours
are quite soft. This song by adele is about a breakup, we
can identify some characteristics in this video like adele
wearing black and the sepia tone over the top.
We see that the focus is mostly on adele and that the action
on screen is quite simple at the beginning of the video, as it
is just her sitting there on a chair, every now and again it
cuts to a dancer or the drummer then it goes back to adele.
Throughout the music video the on screen visuals are quite
engaging and hook the audience to the video, the singing
and the visuals in this video match and both get more and
more passionate as we go through the song.
