- 1. Music Video Analysis- Nickelback, Someday The music video I will be analysing is someday by Nickelback. The music video Someday was recorded in the year 2003. Someday by Nickelback is considered to be a Rock song. The music video has many characteristics of a rock music video; the band is shown throughout the music video performing with their instruments which is seen quite often in rock videos. This makes the music video seem more real because it shows the band the same way as when they perform live therefore making it seem more genuine. In this music video there is a clear relationship between the lyrics and the visuals, the lyrics are illustrated in the music video. The lyrics are about how a couple are in the end of a relationship, this is illustrated in the first part of the song where a women bursts into tears after reading the newspaper with her boyfriend close by her side. Then as she leaves the house, the lyrics at the same time is heard ‘I wish you’d unpack your suitcase”, this shows the lyrics being clearly illustrated in the music video. Later when the women (the girlfriend) gets inside the car to leave, her boyfriend is trying to convince her to come back however she ignores him and drives on, he chases after her whilst she drives away. The boyfriend nevertheless catches up to her only to witness a truck crashing into her car. Then her spirit resurrects and she is next her boyfriend hugging and joyful. Then when they past a newspaper it shows that her boyfriend died in a car accident the day before. Therefore the reason why nobody notices the boyfriend is because he is dead and his spirit is there. This also illustrates the lyrics because the lyrics “Someday, somehow gonna make it allright but not right now”, the reason why they can’t make it is because the boyfriend is dead which is illustrated in the music video. The music video is with line as the visuals. The music starts at a normal tempo, however later as the music get more intense, with a higher tempo, we can see the visuals change as well as the band are playing their instruments with more passion, also there is that car crash which happens when the music gets more high paced. Throughout the music video there is many close ups of the band Nickelback playing their instruments, this is to show the audience that the band is genuine and hard working and also emphasising how good they are at playing their instruments. A record company might look to sell this track because it is conventional to music rock video as it shows the artists shown throughout playing their instruments, so therefore they will target rock fans to buy this record. This video of Nickelback someday is in some ways similar to the Video
- 2. “how you remind me” where the band is seen playing instruments throughout the song, same as in this song. There are some intertextual references, some might argue it is a bit similar to the film the six sense because people are lead to believe that Bruce Willis is alive, same with the boyfriend in this music video, nevertheless the twist in the end is that they are both dead. The audience will be attracted by this as they can refer this music video to something else which might give them satisfaction and lead to them watching the music video again. It can be clearly seen that this music video is both performance based and narrative based. It is performance based because throughout the whole song the band Nickelback is seen playing on their instruments r and singing the song, with close up shots so they can be the main focus point. Also it is narrative based as the whole song is about a failed relationship and how the couples want to make it right but cant because of special circumstances. Overall I believe that this music video is in many ways a conventional rock music video. However I believe that this music video isn’t that predictable as most music videos as there is twist at the end which is hard to predict if watching it for the first time which makes it enjoyable.
