2. STAGES OF CANCER
• STAGE O THROUGH IV-with stage 0 describes non-
invasive cancer that remain within there original location and
stage IV describes invasive cancers that have spread outside
the breast to other parts of the body
3. BREAST SELF-EXAM
•
Breast Self-Exam (BSE)
• Taking a few minutes to do a breast self-exam a minimum of once a month can make a lifetime
of difference. Nearly 70% of all breast abnormalities are found through self-exams. If you find a
lump, schedule an appointment with your doctor, but don't panic—8 out of 10 lumps are not
cancerous. For additional peace of mind, call your doctor whenever you have concerns.
• HOW TO DO A BREAST SELF-EXAM
• In the Shower
• Fingers flat, move gently over every part of each breast. Use your right hand to examine the left
breast, left hand for the right breast. Check for any lump, hard knot, or thickening. Carefully
observe any changes in your breasts.
• Before a Mirror
• Inspect your breasts with your arms at your sides. Next, raise your arms high overhead.
• Look for any changes in the contour of each breast, a swelling, a dimpling of the skin, or changes
in the nipples. Then rest your palms on your hips and press firmly to flex your chest muscles.
Left and right breasts will not exactly match—few women's breasts do.
• Lying Down
• Place a pillow under your right shoulder and put your right arm behind your head. With the
fingers of your left hand flat, press your right breast gently in small circular motions, moving
vertically or in a circular pattern covering the entire breast.
• Use light, medium, and firm pressure. Squeeze the nipple; check for discharge and lumps.
Repeat these steps for your left breast.
4. MAMMOGRAM
• A mammogram is a lower dose x-ray picture,
it helps a doctor to detect early cancer and
also follow by a self- exam. Mammogram
exams doesn’t cause cancer because the
amount of radiation is low. Women should do
one every 1 to 2 years, starting at age 40.
5. BREAST CANCER FACTORS
• No smoking-increases chance of breast cancer
• Exercise daily- Exercise, especially in young women, may decrease hormone
levels and contribute to a decreased breast cancer risk. Breast feeding may also
decrease a woman's risk of breast cancer. Postmenopausal weight gain, especially after
natural menopause and/or after age 60, may increase breast cancer risk.
• Eat a diet rich in carotene
• No alcohol-Drinking alcohol may be linked to increased breast cancer risk. The more
alcohol a woman drinks, the more the risk of breast cancer may increase, compared to
a woman who drinks no alcohol.
• Diet and lifestyle-Studies show that in populations that consume a high-fat diet,
women are more likely to die of breast cancer than women in populations that consume a
low-fat diet. It is not known if a diet low in fat will prevent breast cancer. Eating a diet rich in
beta-carotene may decrease the risk of breast cancer
• Genetics- Women who inherit specific genes are at a greater risk for
developing breast cancer. Research is underway to develop methods of identifying
high-risk genes.
