Bayat Foundation Provides Clean Water to Afghan Communities

The Bayat Foundation has partnered with donors to dig wells and provide clean drinking water to communities in Kabul and other Afghan provinces where it was previously scarce. Through well digging projects, the Foundation has increased access to clean water, which is a vital resource as dirty water can lead to severe illness and death. Recent projects have added four new wells in Kabul as well as Herat and Parwan provinces, improving sanitation conditions for many Afghan residents.

The program established demonstration gardens in 2016 that provide educational opportunities and classes. A youth internship program and East Mesa Grower's Market were also created. The program seeks to expand garden spaces, partner with more schools, and create district-wide farming internships through collaborations with local organizations.

The NSW Aboriginal Water Initiative (AWI) was launched in 2012 to engage Aboriginal communities in water management and ensure their cultural values and uses are recognized. The AWI team works to identify important cultural sites and values to inform water planning. They have engaged over 90 communities so far. However, without further funding, the team may lose 6 members after June 2016. The AWI helps meet various state, commonwealth, and basin plan requirements regarding Indigenous engagement and values. Their flexible process involves community workshops and information sharing to document values for water planning.

The Bayat Foundation has been working to improve access to clean water in Afghanistan by drilling wells, as finding clean water is difficult for most Afghans and climate change is exacerbating the problem. Since late 2013, the foundation has drilled nine wells, starting with four wells in Kabul Province that provided water access to residents in several districts. Other recent projects include new wells in Herat City, Qala e Shahda, and a well near a high school in Kabul.
WHY DO WE NEED WATER MANAGEMENT
India has about 18 percent of the world’s population and only 4 percent of the world’s water resources. It is severely water-stressed, thereby making water management a national priority. India uses about 230 cubic kilometers of groundwater annually, which is more than a quarter of the global total, making it the world’s largest user of groundwater.

IFAD is working to improve access to water in the Sahel region through small-scale projects and initiatives. Access to reliable water sources allows communities to be more resilient to drought and climate change impacts. By investing in water infrastructure like wells, pipes, reservoirs and water towers, IFAD projects in Senegal and Niger have provided water to over 7,400 people. This has enabled activities like vegetable gardening and livestock raising, improving incomes and food security. Small techniques like planting pits have also restored degraded land, increasing crop yields for farmers. Both large-scale initiatives and community-focused solutions are needed to combat desertification and "green" the Sahel region.

Introduction: Groundwater aquifers
Over the last decade, demand for spring management has increased as traditional spring sources have started drying up or becoming contaminated. In response, communities, NGOs and state agencies began dedicated spring protection programmes. In the Himalayas, the State of Sikkim and organizations such as Central Himalayan Action and Research Group (CHIRAG) and People Science Institute (PSI) started identifying and protecting spring recharge areas around 2007. The difference between these programmes and many other previous efforts is that they went beyond supply-side improvements to focus on the use of hydrogeology to map springsheds for targeted interventions.
The Advanced Centre for Water Resources Development and Management (ACWADAM), a research and capacity-building organization comprised of hydrogeologists and other experts began lending their expertise and building capacity of stakeholders. ACWADAM provides technical support, training and materials in hydrogeology to all network partners as well as others in India and the region. Similar programmes began independently in most of the mountain regions of India. Arghyam, a funding organization that was supporting many of these programmes, noticed that these disparate initiatives shared commonalities despite geographic diversity. They thus organized and funded a meeting of these various organizations in June 2014, and the Springs Initiative was born.
The springs initiative aims to tackle the current water crisis and to ensure safe and sustainable access to water for all, by promoting responsible and appropriate management of aquifers, springsheds, and watersheds and conserving ecosystems in partnership with communities, governments and other stakeholders.

Actions Against Hunger is a global humanitarian organization committed to ending world hunger. It works to save malnourished children's lives while providing communities with access to safe water and sustainable hunger solutions. Originally providing refugee and famine assistance, it has expanded to address additional humanitarian concerns worldwide. The group drills wells, taps springs, and installs water systems while training local communities to maintain equipment and work on drinking water issues.

The Bayat Foundation has been a longtime supporter of the Ayenda Learning Center in Bamiyan, Afghanistan, providing funding for things like a new generator and training programs for female students. Founded in 2009, the Ayenda Learning Center provides education and vocational training to 200 orphans who previously lacked access to education. It is located in the impoverished province of Bamiyan. The Bayat Foundation founder oversaw construction of the center's building for free, financed through private donations, in order to bring much-needed support to children in the area.

Overcoming challenges, surpassing goals the awcc story
Ehsan Bayat began working to establish Afghanistan's first wireless network in the 1990s, but plans were delayed by the Taliban rise to power and subsequent US trade ban. After the 2001 Bonn Agreement, Bayat launched the Afghan Wireless Communication Company (AWCC) in 2002, overcoming challenges from the country's infrastructure and conflicts. AWCC grew rapidly, reaching 2,000 subscribers in Kabul a few months after its start and 25,000 subscribers nine months later. By 2008, AWCC had over 2 million subscribers across Afghanistan.

Water Sanitation ● As part of its mission to improve the quality of life for people in Afghanistan, the Bayat Foundation has partnered with donors to dig wells in communities where clean water can be scarce. ● Disastrous climate events and ongoing environmental damage in Afghanistan have led to poor sanitation conditions for many of the country’s residents. ● Dirty water can lead to severe illness and even death, making clean water a vital resource.
- 4. Projects ● The Bayat Foundation has made digging wells a priority. ● In recent years, it has added four new wells in the Dashte-e-Barchi and Arzan - Qemat areas of Kabul, as well as in Herat Province and Parwan Province. ● Many of the wells have been made possible by individual and organizational sponsors, including the Myers Ball Foundation, Mr. Abdul Karim Amin, and Mrs. Shimah Amin.
