Not Just Horsing Around
Imagine yourself as a child with restricted movements and impairments not felt by others your age.
Imagine for a longing to be free, free from the restricting walls of the hospital and therapy room.
Freedom was a goal that Anne and Tom had for their son William. They wanted freedom of the
traditional therapy setting because watching their child make little to no progress therapy session
after therapy session left Anne and Tom discouraged. They wanted nothing more for their son
than to thrive and develop the new skills that they knew he could. William has hypotonia, or low
muscle tone and some overall developmental delays said Anne. His parents set several goals, but
their first goal was to get William to learn to walk. Watching his therapy sessions in the traditional
setting were painful as parents. They were feeling hopeless with the lack of progress with the
physical therapy sessions William was attending. The Physical therapist herself felt that there was
not much more that she could do there in the hospital for William. That s when she recommended
hippotherapy. Hippotherapy is what would eventually get William to his goal of walking in 3 short
months, and though not a therapy goal, one of William s first words was Dolly, the name of a
favorite volunteer. Hippotherapy for William. What is hippotherapy? Hippotherapy

Sweat by Zora Hurston Essay
Zora Neale Hurston s short story Sweat takes place in the 1920s in a small African American
community in southern Florida. The story takes a look at a woman dominated by her husband,
a common issue for many wives in the south during this time. Delia Jones, the protagonist in the
story, is a hard working woman who has bought her own home and supported her husband for
fifteen years by taking in the laundry of white folks from the next town over. Delia s husband
Sykes does not value her or the work she does to support the both of them. Sykes has abused his
wife for fifteen years and takes no shame in parading around his fat mistress for all to see. Sykes
wants to get rid of Delia and take everything she s ever worked for. Delia, though... Show more

Depending on who is speaking at the time, the tone of Sweat seems either one of anger and
frustration, one of hope and determination, or one of sadness and despair. When Sykes speaks
the tone is angry and evil because almost everything that comes out of his mouth is negative. In
comparison, When Delia speaks the tone rings more of peace, hope, and determination. When the
narrator chimes in the tone seems sad because he/she informs the reader of the upsetting truths
about Delia s marriage and the many hardships she has had to face throughout the story. Delia
represents the good in the story. She remains calm, level headed, and spiritually in tune despite
her husband s determination to make her miserable. Once a right pretty li l trick, Delia is now
worn and dried out like sugar cane that s been chewed to no end ( Sweat 43). However her soul
remains strong as she turns to her spirituality for comfort and hope. She has smarts although
uneducated and the fact that she built her own house and now supports her and her husband by
washing white people s clothes demonstrates her strength and determination. Delia is a dynamic
character as shown early in the story with this quote: She seized the iron skillet from the stove and
struck a defensive pose, which act surprised him greatly, coming from her. Sykes dumbfounded
reaction to Delia s defensive action allows the reader to assume that this

The Importance Of The American Dream
The road to success is not easy to navigate, but with hard work, drive, and passion, it s possible to
achieve the American dream. Tommy Hilfiger. What is the American dream? How is it possible to
achieve the American dream if there are large corporations ruining it for the companies trying to
reach such dream? The American dream consists of the ideal that every US citizen should have an
equal opportunity to achieve success and prosperity through hard work, determination, and
initiative. What about those who are starting a new business whose dream is to become a large
organization one day? Everyday, large corporations ruin the dream of starting from the bottom and

If the companies such as NestlГ©, PepsiCo, Coca Cola, Unilever, Danone, General Mills,
Kellogg s, Mars, Associated British Foods, and Mondelez, are making billions of revenue daily
by owning so many companies, how can an average company survive with loss of profit due to
competition with other companies owned by these top corporations? Moreover, I know large
businesses are ruining the American dream because they leave no opportunity for small business
growth, but for a few people, they believe that the American Dream is fine for small businesses to
start because they believe that these businesses have an opportunity. According to Kandra Parrot s
article, To me business is tied directly into the promises that makes America what it is. How many
of us were sold the American dream from a young age? The American dream is defined as the
ideal that every US citizen should have an equal opportunity to achieve success and prosperity
through hard work, determination, and initiative. (Parrot) She states that she believes that there is
opportunity to start a business, but how is it possible to start a new business when companies in a
capitalist society take over the markets economically? As a large company, they have no
competition to a small business because they have experiences of success and failure, as suppose to
a small business where they are striving for their ups, but most definitely receiving their downs,
such as investment and inconsistent income. In addition, raising

Recent Work On Follow The Perturbed Leader ( Ftpl )...
Recent work on follow the perturbed leader (FTPL) algorithms for adversarial multi armed bandit
problem has highlighted the role of the hazard rate of the distribution generating the perturbations.
Assuming that the hazard rate is bounded allows one to provide regret analyses for a variety of
FTPL algorithms for the multi armed bandit problem. This paper pushes the inquiry into regret
bounds for FTPL algorithms beyond the bounded hazard rate condition. There are good reasons to
do so: natural distributions such as the uniform and Gaussian violate the condition. We give regret
bounds for both bounded support and unbounded support distributions without assuming the hazard
rate condition. We also disprove a conjecture that the Gaussian... Show more content on

The former corresponds to infimal convolution smoothing and the latter corresponds to stochastic
(or integral convolution) smoothing (Abernethy et al., 2014). Having a generic framework for
understanding perturbations allows one to study a wide variety of online linear optimization games
and a number of interesting perturbations.
There has also been some work on understanding perturbation approaches in bandit problems.
Kujala and Elomaa (2005) and Poland (2005) both showed that using the exponential (actually
double exponential/Laplace) distribution in an FTPL algorithm coupled with standard unbiased
estimation techniques yields near optimal O(NT logN) regret in T rounds with N arms. Unbiased
estimation needs access to arm probabilities that are not explicitly available when using an FTPL
algorithm. Neu and BartВґok (2013) introduced the geometric resampling scheme to approximate
these probabilities while still guaranteeing low regret. Recently, Abernethy et al. (2015) analyzed
FTPL for adversarial multi armed bandits and provided regret bounds under the condition that the
hazard rate of the perturbation distribution is bounded. This condition allowed them to consider a
variety of perturbation distributions beyond the exponential, such as gamma, Gumbel, Frechet,
Pareto, and Weibull.
Unfortunately, the bounded hazard rate condition is violated by two of the most widely known
distributions: namely the uniform1 and the Gaussian distributions. As a result, the

Princess Bride Satire
Rob Reiner was the director and mastermind of The Princess Bride, a cult classic phenomenon
since its release in 1987. Reiner brought to light the most basic qualities of the fantasy genre
while also launching the careers of very many well known actors like Fred Savage of the Wonder
Years. Some of the other faces you may recognize are Cary Elwes, Mandy Pantikin, Wallace
Shawn, Andre The Giant, and Billy Crystal. The purpose of this filmwas to parody the fantasy genre
while also bringing the novel to life. Although the film had a very low budget maxing out at
16,000,000 it still managed to portray the story in a way that will continue to be loved by people of
all ages for years to come. In the beginning of the movie Fred Savage plays a young man who

My favorite is life is not fair, so many times while watching the film I thought to myself ugh that
is not fair. I was so aggravated that things never worked out as planned for the star crossed lovers
until I heard the conversation between the grandfather and the grandson, the grandfather looks at
the grandson and says Who says life is fair? Where is that written? and that really hits home,
although Buttercup and Wesley did not have a fair life so to speak they had a good life even if at
times it was hard. Another lesson that we can learn from The Princess Bride is we sacrifice for those
things we believe in. Inigo Montoya for example sacrificed years of his life to study swordplay
because he believed he would one day find the man who killed his father. Although his sacrifice
turned out positively the story of Inigo reminds that if we want something, we must constantly
sacrifice for the things we want no matter how frivolous it may seem. I also took away the lesson
that reputation may not always be the truth, take Fezzik for example he was a giant and seemed
very evil and scary then we get to know him and see things from his

After setting up the functional units, I had to decide on which product I would purchase and

Book Review Of Sherman Alexie s Superman And Me
In his essay, Superman and Me, Sherman Alexie explains how books allowed him to escape the
societal expectations for Native Americans. Alexie was raised on a Spokane tribe reservation in
Washington state. He portrays his childhood at the reservation as revolving around literature. He
then describes how his father piled literature in every room of his house, from Western action
novels to comics to books about the Vietnam War. Alexie claims that a Superman comic allowed
him to teach himself how to read, by looking at the drawings, dialogue, and the script and
making assumptions. As a result of learning to read at the age of three, he advanced quickly in
school. Alexie then compares his advancement with a non Indian child s, explaining how he
received little recognition due to his race and society s expectation for Native American
children. He believes that he was too smart, too arrogant, and too determined to fail. In order to
save his future, Alexie read anything from cereal boxes to auto repair manuals. He also stayed up
late into the night reading books to gain additional knowledge. As a result of all of this reading,
dedication, and perseverance, Alexie was able to go to college. Earning a college degree prepared
him for his future career: a successful writer. He writes novels, short stories and poems. Along with
writing, he visits many Native American schools. At the schools, he interacts with students and
encourages them to read and write. He also notices that the

Kevlar Leather Jacket Pros And Cons
Introduction
In the decades since I first climbed on top of a motorcycle, I have seen a lot of changes. Riding
partners have come and gone, laws have evolved, and the public s perception of bikers has,
thankfully, improved. The biking community is in a state of perpetual change, just like the world
around it, but one thing remains constant: leather jackets. Both stylish and secure, leather has been
relied upon by bikers throughout history to keep them safe from the elements and protect them
during falls and crashes.
The leather jacket is as synonymous with motorcycles as two wheels and an engine, but an
increasing number of bikers are leaving behind their leather jackets in favor of alternatives of a
different material, such as mesh or Kevlar. Some readers may be unfamiliar with the latter, which
hasn t received as much publicity as some other protective materials, but if Kevlar motorcycle
jackets can gain global attention, it is quite possible they can dethrone their leather opponents.
But what exactly does a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Leather jackets tend to offer very poor ventilation, even when they are fitted with mesh vents. If
you live in a cold climate, this likely won t be a problem, but those who attempt to ride in a leather
motorcycle jacket during warmer months will be putting themselves at risk of heat stroke.
Cruel
As the world becomes increasingly more mindful, the cruelty associated with leather jackets
becomes a bigger and bigger problem. Leather, as most of us know but do our best to ignore, is
made from the skin of animals, most commonly cows. Killing animals for the sake of clothing is,
admittedly, pretty horrendous, and many animal loving bikers have moved on to textile motorcycle
jackets while actively campaigning against leather protective equipment.

Paul And Silas Research Paper
Paul and Silas went to Philippi to preach the gospel. One day, they met a slave girl on the way to

ordered the ghost in the name of Jesus to come out of the girl, and immediately, the ghost left

The jailer thought that he would be punished because the prisoners might had escaped. So he

Confederate Loss
The Loss The Battle of Gettysburg was the most brutal battle in the American Civil War. Many
people consider this the turning point of the Civil War, for every major battle prior to this won
by the Confederate Army, led under the famous Robert E. Lee. In the span of three days in the
town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, the Union Army persevered and won. There were many men
at fault for the Confederate loss, however the only person to fully blame is the cavalry leader
J.E.B. Stuart. He was in the wrong by not doing his job; Stuart failed to give the position of the
Union Army before the battle, he failed to give the information necessary during the battle, and he
failed to re enforce the Confederate army. J.E.B. Stuart was most at fault for the Confederate loss at

Stuart failed his job. Advancing through the North, General Robert E. Lee depended on Stuart to
report information about the terrain of the unfamiliar land and the movement of the Army of the

and have a devastating win to end the war. At this point, General Lee and his army were running
low on provisions. Stuart, instead of gathering essential information, was joy riding in the North
causing great commotion. If it had not been for a paid spy by the name of Harrison, the
Confederates would have surely been blind in enemy territory. Harrison gave the size of the
Union Army, as well as which direction the army was going. All roads converged at Gettysburg,
so Lee thought it was the best place to strike. Also, Harry Heth, a division commander who some

for they would have known what they were up against. The Confederate army at full strength could

Dame Folly Demonstrates The Nature Of Choices
Napoleon once said, Nothing is more difficult, and therefore more precious, than to be able to
decide. We all make choices every day, some more serious, and some less. Do I wear this shirt,
or that one? Do I eat that slice of cake or no? Do I start a conversation with that student? Do I
choose to obey God? The book of Proverbs highlights the vital nature of choices. In Proverbs 9,
you see Lady Wisdom inviting whoever bypassers to join her for a feast. At the same time,
however, Dame Folly is right there loudly persuading those same bypassers into her house
Wisdom has built her house; she has hewn her seven pillars. She has slaughtered her beasts; she
has mixed her wine; she has alos set her table. She has sent out her young women to call

A Brief Note On The United States And The Changes Of...
A doctor in the twentieth century is considered a skilled professional and is held with high
regards. Currently in the United States, this career comes financial stability and luxury, however,
this has not always been the case. In the 1760s, before the colonies became America, a doctor had
the same socioeconomic status as a plumber in today s society. They were considered lower class
and their work was viewed as being dirty. The professionalization of doctors in America to the
status of physicians in England had various obstacles that prevented the change from happening.
During this time, the regulation and payments of physicians changed just as their level of
professionalism increased. This paper will discuss the professionalization of... Show more content

This caused financial issues for physicians until phones and paved roads were invented making it
easier to schedule appointments and to reach destinations in a timely manner for house calls. The
first formal medical school was founded in Pennsylvania in 1765. Although doctors were finally
able to establish formal medical schools, there were many schools that were not up to par for a
professional institution. Many of the medical schools kept their standards low in fear of losing
students, which they thought would make the institutions go under. In the 1870s, Johns Hopkins
Medical School became one of the first schools to raise the standards for aspiring doctors. This step
towards professionalism was an important stride and, years later, other medical schools followed.
When the American Medical Association (AMA) was founded in 1847 as a way to regulate the
doctors within the United States, many practicing physicians avoided the AMA because they had
been regulating themselves for years. According to Paul Star in his Social Transformation of
American Medicine, A committee appointed by the AMA Council on Medical Education in 1913
recommended that the AMA regulate postgraduate schools and drive out commercialism in
graduate as in undergraduate education.

Essay about Workers Compensation Fraud
Workers Compensation Fraud
Worker s Compensation is a service that provides reimbursement for lost wages to employees
who have sustained injuries from work or work related tasks. It is also one of the services that is
most often the victim of fraud. Each of the three types of fraud, claimant, employer, and provider, is
defined by the same characteristics, outlined by the Ohio Board of Workers Compensation:
#61623; Receiving workers compensation benefits that are not entitled to the claimant;
#61623; Making false or misleading statements with the purpose of securing goods or services

This proves little if any about the real problem, though, because only about 1,000 claims were
investigated in Kansas over five years (Lorenz), while over seven times that amount were
investigated in New York and California in the same time period ( InsuranceFraud ). Throughout
most sources, though, it is clear to see that employer fraud is the most prevalent and costly type of
fraud. Employer fraud includes a number of schemes used by employers to reduce the number of
workers compensation insurance premiums by underreporting payroll, misclassifying employees
occupations and misrepresenting their claims experience. According to the National Council on
Compensation, the most common frauds include:
#61623; Misclassification of workers. Employers can either classify workers as independent
contractor or misrepresent the work performed, which places workers in a less hazardous
occupational category. Both of these tactics are intended to avoid or reduce premiums.
#61623; Underreporting payroll. Another method of premium reduction is employers not reporting
parts of the work force, paying workers off the books, or creating a companion corporation to hide
a portion of the employees.

Doing so will strengthen you and your spouse s relationship prior to marriage and perhaps get some
things in check first. Premarital counseling also teaches communication and conflict resolution
techniques. This will help to increase the level of marital satisfaction. It is also found/suggested
that greater communication skills reduce the risk of divorce. The counseling should also bring up
discussions that are vital to a couple s relationship. Whatever these things are they should be
hatched out before so there are no surprises in the relationship. These issues may be minor or
major depending on what s discussed. This may be a time to sort out like gender roles,
expectations, and finances most importantly. Premarital counseling is basically making you aware
of strengths and growth areas therefore insuring a happy and long future together as one (Stebbins,

Types of Premarital Counseling
As stated earlier there are various approaches to premarital preparation simply because there are
some many different types of people to connect to the different approaches offered (Duncan, Childs

Homelessness Is A Year Round Issue
Homelessness is a year round issue that needs to be addressed. People that are homeless will most
likely commit to crime, because it is almost impossible for homeless people get a job. Think about
it, a job application requires a home address, phone number to get in contact with and social
insurance number. Those are all things a homeless person lacks. The origin of homelessnesscan be
traced all the way back to colonial America. Homelessness arise during the American Revolution
and Civil War. It is still an ongoing issue today in the City of Philadelphia. It has become a problem
today due to factors such as, unemployment, insecure jobs, low incomes, addictions, and mental
issues.
There are specific statistics that illustrates the magnitude of the issue. According to Penn Current,
there are approximately five thousand individuals that are homeless in Philadelphia. An article
written by RRI, mentioned that there are one point five million people living in Philadelphia and
almost twenty six percent are below poverty level. Newswork provided the statistic showing forty

The Issue Of Substance Abuse Essay
It is well known that any form of substance use can be fatal, but so can a lot of other things:
choking, accidents, health issues, and sheer bad luck. However, there is something special
about substance abuse fatalities from substance use are considered preventable. Take deaths
associated with driving under the influence of alcohol, lung cancer brought on by smoking, or
heart attacks associated with cocaine use. A person could die in a car crash, from lung cancer,
or a heart attack without ever touching alcohol, cigarettes, or cocaine respectively. However,
there is an increase in death associated with these items. The most curious part of this is the legal
versus illegal categorization of substances. According to the Center for Disease Control, tobacco
is considered the leading cause of preventable death (CDC, 2016). Yet, not only is it legal, a
person in the U.S. can purchase cigarettes as young as 18, which is three years earlier than the
legal age to drink alcohol. This knowledge leads to questions about addictionand prevalence of
substance use. Besides being readily available and highly addictive, are there other factors in the
use and abuse of legal substances and are they good indicators of illicit drug use? There is clear
evidence to support that children, adolescents, and adults learn and emulate what they see on
television. The American Academy of Pediatrics has done research and come to the conclusion that
the causes of adolescent substance use are

The European Recovery Program Of The United States Essay
Left as one of the only remaining major powers, not significantly devastated by World War II,
the United States of America lit the beacon of humanitarian aid. At its own discretion, after the
Soviet Union s refusal of America s extent of influence and relief in the European continent, the
U.S. was free to do as it pleased regarding attempts of foreign assistance. Secretary of State in the
U.S. at the time, George Marshall, proposed the Marshall Plan , originally called the European
Recovery Program , in June of 1947, during his speech at Harvard University. Marshall s
argument was to provide 13 billion U.S. dollars, about 5% of the American gross domestic
product during that period, to European nations to bail them out of their continental crisis post
World War II. The plan was in operation for four years, rebuilding war terrorized countries with
several goals put in place by the United States. America would take on the responsibility to rebuild
their economies, rebuild their currency, and foster a free and open trade between European and
U.S. economies. Aid provided by major powers usually involves some level of self interest,
benefiting the donors as well as the needs of those in less fortunate situations. The Marshall Plan
was set in motion with the idea that, if successful, the U.S. would become better off in the long
term, creating new markets for American goods and flourishing the economy back home. Funds
used within the European continent required agreement and

Bhopal, India (Union Carbide)
Background and history of the Union Carbide Accident
The Union Carbide Accident occurred in 1984 in Bhopal, India. The incident led to a discharge of
approximately 30 tons of highly poisonous gases, including methyl isocyanate (MIC). The plant
was situated in close proximity to shanty outskirts of the town (Taylor, 2014). Following the
incident, close to six hundred thousand people were exposed to the toxic gas. The effects of the
incident on human health were manifested through nausea, eye and throat burns and eventually,
deaths. In addition, the incident led to retardation of mental development in infants. The average
death toll was reported as 15,000 persons. Today, toxic substances are still evident at the site
(Taylor, 2014).
Ethical Questions or Problems that Came Up
Preliminary investigations point out a fundamentally flawed working environment at the facility.
There was a fundamental departure from the ASCE Canon that requires engineers to hold
paramount the welfare, health and safety of the public ( Code of Ethics, 2016). Simply, the plant was
devoid of adequate operational and safety instruments. The available instruments such as MIC
refrigerators were of poor quality. This affected the operation of the systems components (Taylor,
2014).
The second ethical issue observed was gross negligence by the government to protect public
interest. Even though three separate

Graphical User Interfaces
Modern society heavily depends on the abilities of computers, Information Technology, and
information processing. As such, since access to information occurs mainly through digital
means and media, the way information is arranged and presented on the screen is crucial.
Because of this need for fast access and easy arrangement arose, in the early 1980s, companies
started to work on various graphical user interfaces (or GUI for short). Most dictionaries define a
GUI as a way of arranging information on a computerscreen that is easy to understand and use
because it uses icons, menus and a mouse rather than only text. Introducing such software allowed a

Before Graphical User Interfaces became a standard for giving commands and retrieving
information, computers were controlled through the means of a text based interface. This meant
that a person had to enter text commands in order to communicate with the computer, which meant
that one had to know various commands that could be entered and specific, technologic jargon that
for a normal person , not prominent in the art of computing was simply hard, or even impossible to
comprehend and memorize. On top of that, the data was displayed on the screen was usually
presented in form of a column of text, employing the aforementioned jargon and syntax of computer
language . As a consequence, computers were rather reserved for enthusiasts and professionals than
general public, which at that time didn t find them useful or attractive.
When a user interface that focused on presenting information in a graphical way appeared, a
revolution took place. Suddenly, a common person even one, that has never dealt with such a
device before could approach a computer, and be actually able to perform operations on it, using
a pointer device instead of typing complicated commands on a keyboard. If he wanted to move a
file from one place to another, he wouldn t have to type COPY followed with a string of letters
and symbols, but simply grab the file with the arrow, drag it across the screen, and drop it where he
wanted. Such action strongly

Essay on Analysis of The Great Wave off Kanagawa by Hokusai
The Great Wave off Kanagawa by Hokusai is a famous woodcut print that is commonly referred
to as The Great Wave. Hokusai Katsushika was one of the greatest Japanese printmakers of the
19th century. The print, The Great Wave, is a part of a 36 piece series of the views of Japan s most
famous mountain; Mount Fuji. Hokusais series was very popular and sold rather quickly. Due to its
popularity, Hokusai decided to extend the series to 46 pieces. The original piece was created
around 1830 and was published in 1832 by Nishimuraya Yohachi. Within this paper, I will be

It might, due to the wood it is printed on, but the artist did not put any literal texture onto the
print. Although, there is implied texture that we can see within the painting; the lines, values,
and shadows can create an implied texture. An example within the print would be the tips of the
wave, Hokusai uses shadows and rigid lines to create texture of the waves turning into mist. The
bottom of the wave is a smooth line, creating the texture of slick water being sucked up to the
top of the giant wave. There are many values within this print, but only constitute a handful of
colors: Blue, brown, black, white, and gray. Blue is the main color within this print, there are
many values of the color blue used. The deepest part of the waves are the darkest blue, while the
parts of the waves closest to the surface are lightest blue or white. The sky has a gradient, which
is going from the lightest color to the darkest color or vice versa; the sky is creating a gradient,
from the bottom up, of black to a very light gray, then to a white yellow. The colors chosen by
Hokusai can also interpret feelings and emotions. The habitual feeling when seeing the color blue
is sadness. Sadness and despair would be fitting emotions for this work, due to the giant wave
about to crash upon the men in their boats. Blue can also emit a feeling of elegance. The
composition of the print and how the lines of the wave flow can be considered a form of elegance.

Neoclassicism and the Enlightenment Essay
Neoclassicism and the Enlightenment
The Enlightenment was a time of great innovation and evolution. One of the most significant
movements which owes at least the majority of its beginnings to the Enlightenment is the
architectural and artistic movement of Neoclassicism. This Neoclassicism of the mid eighteenth to
mid nineteenth centuries is one that valued ancient Greek, Roman, and
Etruscan artistic ideals.
These ideals, including order, symmetry, and balance, were considered by many European
generations to be the highest point of artistic excellence. Although many movements in European art
were largely devoid of classical characteristics, they were always looked to as sources of inspiration
and were revived as significant ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The pettiness of these movements had created a backlash and these thinkers and art critics
welcomed the harsher and more ordered Neoclassical style as they began to swing the art pendulum
in the opposite direction.
One of the primary causes in the rise of Neoclassicism in the mid eighteenth century was the
expansion of what was previously called a classical education. By 1750 Italian tourism was already
a full blown industry, with guides and guidebooks circulating throughout
Europe. As a part of any young man s education, he now had to make the artistic tour of Italy,
especially Florence, Rome, and Naples. This was not just a quick visit to a couple museums;
rather, it was a lengthy, often times more than a year, and in depth study of the rich trove of art
that these cities had to offer. It was supplemented with classes and lectures at the museums and
time taken after these to sketch or paint these precious works to take home. The proliferation of
these sketches would compound and any aspiring artist was also then required to study these
works. The increased influence and awareness of Greek and Roman art in the studies of the
developing artists would soon begin to show in their designs.
One of the most significant reasons that a renewed interest in Italy has arisen was the recently
found sites of Pompeii and Herculaneum.
The excavation of these sites revealed massive amounts

The clean drinking water supplied to millions of people and wildlife species are at serious risk. The
Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection recently fined a drilling company after
methane gas leaked from a drilling operation and seeped into nearby residential wells ( Marcellus
Shale ). This is not a common occurrence; the problem of methane gas migrating into ground water
is a very serious problem. You can not drink water, shower or wash clothes with water that has been
contaminated with methane. There is documented proof, including video that actually shows water
from a kitchen faucet being ignited into flames with a lighter, the water containing enough methane
gas to become flammable. Property owners that sold land rights to gas companies are now second
guessing their decisions and suffering the dilemma of tainted ground water and well water.
Therefore, developing the Marcellus Shale formation requires very large amounts of fresh water
and fluid disposal. Recent inspections by the state have uncovered violations that threaten
Pennsylvania water resources and its environment. Violations include poorly constructed and
dangerous water retention ponds, inadequate erosion and sediment controls, improper waste and
fluid disposal and also improper and unregistered withdrawals of water from streams. Meanwhile,

Introduction
Ultrasound is a sound wave that has a frequency greater than the highest frequency humans can
hear, therefore it occupies frequency ranges from 20 kHz up to several GHz. Ultrasound is bound
by the exactly same wave properties as all other sorts of waves, those being: reflection, refraction,
diffraction and mode conversion.
Ultrasound is widely used in current days, across a vast number of different fields. With the help of
ultrasonic devices, objects can be detected and distances can be measured far more easily.
Veterinary and human medicine both utilise ultrasonic imaging, sonography. The applications of
ultrasound can be also found in non destructive testing (NDT), where invisible flaws in structures or
products can be easily found. Another, well known application is SONAR (Sound Navigation And
Raging), which uses transmitted and reflected underwater sound waves to detect and locate
underwater objects.

Enterprise risk management (ERM) has been defined by the COSO (2004) as a process, effected
by an entity s board of directors, management and other personnel, applied in strategy setting and
across the enterprise, designed to identify potential events that may affect the entity, and manage

and risk avoidance, reduction, sharing, and acceptance. Enhancing is concerned with increasing the
chances of the occurrence of positive risks.

A Raisin In The Sun Lena Quotes
Lena is arguably the most determined character in Lorraine Hansberry s A Raisin in the Sun. She
works tirelessly to support her family s dreams, and refuses to leave anyone behind. Not even a
feeble dying houseplant. Her hopes for the future of her family illustrate the classic idea of the
American Dream , indicating that anyone can achieve success if they work hard enough. Lena s
withering plant represents her will to survive, the dreams she has for her children, and her loyalty
to the ones she loves. While Lena hasn t had an easy life, she refuses to give up, just like the plant
that continues to grow without proper nutrients and sunlight.
Lena s plant represents her will to survive, despite her dreary circumstances. Lord if this little old
plant doesn t get more sun than it s been getting it ain t never going to see spring again, ( Act I
Scene I, pg 1550). Just like her plant, Lena has barely been given enough to ... Show more content

Fixing my plant so it won t get hurt none on the way. Mama, you going to take that to the new
house? ( Act II Scene III, pg. 1592). Lena has lived for a long time, and has seen the very best and
very worst of her family. Even though her family is in a disheveled state, and is struggling to do
the right thing, Lena does not lose faith in them. She refuses to leave anyone behind, even though
they may be struggling or making bad decisions. This love and determination can be seen in the
way she cares for the plant. Even though the plant is struggling to grow, she doesn t turn her back,
or express indifference towards it. Instead, she continues to care for it, and attempts to help it.
Even when others have lost hope in the plant, and it seems easier just to leave it behind, Lena
doesn t change her mind. She gives this same kind of unconditional love to her family, often acting
as a bastion against all the harsh criticism and judgement in the

Navajo Tribe Issues Essay
Residing in the Southwest United States, the Navajo Indian tribe is one of the largest tribes in
America today. In their own language, they refer to themselves as DinГ© which means the people
. They are an old tribe with descendants tracing their roots back to the thirteenth century. The first
contact that the Navajos had with white settlers was during the Mexican American War in 1846.
The United States conducted peaceful relations with the Navajo for over fifteen years. Forts were
built to help protect the Navajo from Spanish/Mexican raids on the Navajo s cattle. Eventually, a
new military commander, James H. Carleton, was named in New Mexicoand he began to raid
Navajo lands with a vengeance. He ordered the Navajo to surrender. When... Show more content on

The people of the Navajo nation suffered in hunger for many years until the war was over and
they once again received help form the government. Ironically, it was Navajo code talkers that
were enlisted in the Marine Corps during World War II. These men developed a code that was
undecipherable in their native tongue that allowed troops to communicate during the war. The
modern Navajo Nation Territory is stretched across three states southeast Utah, northwest New
Mexico and northeast Arizona. To be considered a Navajo Native American, an individual must
have a blood certificate that certifies that they are one fourth DinГ© by blood. As of 2000, there
were 173,987 blood certified, Navajo Indians in the United States, with 58.34%of them living on
the territory lands (Wikipedia, 2010). They have a government that is modeled after the United
States government with executive, judicial, and legislative branches. They also have a
Constitution and their own laws. There are Navajo police that work with federal government
officials when the need arises. As with any nation, big or small, there are always issues that must
be faced. The Navajo nation is no different. There are constant struggles to educate, empower,
provide and protect the people and natural resources. According to the 2000 National Assessment of

It s been a great experience doing an internship at OfficeMax. Through this internship, I realize I
need to be more proficient. This internship gave me an opportunity to develop professional skills.
When I m presenting a safety technique I need to make sure I don t have any grammar errors in

so I don t undermine my credibility in front of everyone. I have to proofread my written work

Followers In Qualitative Research
What Do Followers Want From Leaders Regarding Communication Introduction Employees are
a driving force who have an impact on organizational success. The leader is the operational
determinant for whether employees receive what they want in terms of leadership. This
qualitative method research paper will examine what followers want from their leaders in terms
of quantity, quality, engagement, style and methods. Extracting themes from an open ended
survey will determine the areas where employees want more from their leader/supervisor as it
relates to communication. Suggestions will be made on how these wants can be satisfied.
Qualitative Method Population and Sample The population sample included three followers with
the following breakdown (see Figure 1): participant #1 African American Clerk with a Bachelor
s degree who has been in his position between 6 12 months; participant #2 Caucasian Executive
Assistant who has been in her position between 1 9 years; and participant #3 Hispanic Analyst

Our recommendation is to take Sears Holdings Corp. (SHLD) private through a private equity
buyout. After doing so, we recommend implementing a centralized management structure and
recruiting retail savvy executives for the upper management team. We then recommend focusing on
increasing value by capitalizing on SHLD s real estate holdings through leasing agreements and
increasing partnerships with complementary enterprises. Also, we recommend improving employee
retention rates and retaining exclusive rights to private brands. Finally, we recommend focusing on
a long term strategy to continue to maximize SHLD s ecommerce platforms. We believe these
recommendations will lead to long term stability through increases in customer base and... Show

Additionally, Sears inventory turnover is equal to 148 days, which is more than 2x the industry
average of 65 days. Finally, Sears Holdings quick ratio is .20, which indicates potential for a
liquidity crunch because its liquid assets cannot pay off its current liabilities in a crisis.
Opportunities One of the opportunities for SHDL to explore is to expand in to other nations,
particularly emerging markets. Another opportunity is to expand is to accelerate the growth of
SHLD s ecommerce programs, which only represents 3% of its revenues, especially as the
industry is slowly shifting from brick and mortar to brick and click format. Lastly, SHLD has an
opportunity to lease floor space out to companies who can increase traffic into the store. Threats
One threat to SHLD is its competition with many retailers because it is not very differentiated
from its competitors and lacks brand loyalty, thus nothing is stopping the customer from
overlooking Sears and visiting a rival retailer. Another threat is a downturn in the economy which
could wreck havoc on SHLD s financial position. Porter s Five Forces Analysis Threat of new
entrants is relatively low. There are high barriers to entry in the discount retail market, including
high capital costs, limited access to investors, and a largely crowded out market place. Threat of

Corrections in teh Criminal Justice System
When most people hear the term, corrections they probably think of prisons, striped uniforms,
cellblocks, armed guards, and surly prisoners. Part of American corrections is prisons, but
corrections is much more than that. Corrections includes prisons, jails, halfway houses, group
homes, probation, parole, intensive supervision, electric monitoring, restitution programs, victim
offender mediation, and even the death penalty. Correctionscan be defined as all that society does
to and with offenders after they have been found guilty of a crime. Corrections even includes
some things done to offenders prior to conviction, such as detention in jails pending adjudication
of guilt and programs for offenders who are diverted out of the criminal system. I will start this
paper by exploring early corrections in the United States. The village style, communal life of
colonial America did not lend itself to extensive use of institutional incarceration. Resources and
expertise for erecting jails or prisonfacilities were non existent. A few jails were used as short
term housing facilities for those awaiting trial or imposition of a sentence. Some offenders
served short jail terms, but one reason jails were not used as frequently as in later times was due
to economics. Even today, jails and prisons are a financial drain on society. It is expensive to feed
and house prisoners. Another economic motive has been connected to the scarce use of prisons and
jails. Incarcerated prisoners

The Symbolic Use of Nature in Hawthorne s The Scarlet Letter
The Symbolic Use of Nature in The Scarlet Letter In Nathaniel Hawthorne s classic The Scarlet
Letter, nature plays a very important and symbolic role. Hawthorne uses nature to convey the mood
of a scene, to describe characters, and to link the natural elements with human nature. Many of the
passages that have to do with nature accomplish more than one of these ideas. All throughout the
book, nature is incorporated into the story line. The deep symbolism conveyed by certain aspects of
nature helps the reader gain a deeper understanding of the plight and inner emotions of the
characters in the novel. Hawthorne s moods or prevailing feelings during certain scenes are
revealed to the reader through nature.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Another example of Hawthorne s use of nature to set the mood for a scene is shown when he
describes the weather and conditions when Hester and Pearl secretly meet with Arthur
Dimesdale deep within the forest. The day was chill and somber. Overhead was a gray expanse
of cloud, slightly stirred, however, by a breeze; so that a gleam of flickering sunshine might
now and then be seen a its solitary play along the path (159). Hawthorne describes a cold and
gray day. This description gives the reader a sense of isolation as well as slight depression.
However, the mention of a slight breeze that ruffles the canopy of the forest just enough to let in
little flickers of sunshine conveys a fleeting ray of hope that seems to coexist with the gloominess
in the scene. In many scenes during the book, moods or prevailing feelings are established
through descriptions of the natural surroundings of the characters. This aspect of Hawthorne s
writing makes the book deeper and more emotional. Nature is often used symbolically in The
Scarlet Letter to describe people physically, emotionally, and socially. Hawthorne uses this
technique very effectively. He gives the reader a good feel for the true psyche of some of the
characters during different parts of the story. An excellent example of how characters are revealed
through nature is the description of the lone rose bush. It symbolizes Hester and the strength she

Characteristics Of Femme Fatale
Visually, film noirs are often dark and expressive to mimic the moral ambiguity in which the
characters find themselves (Fluck 385). This visual darkness is portrayed using low key lighting
and the number of scenes that take place in low lit interiors or exteriors at night. The tone is set
through visuals, immediately, as under the opening credits the audience sees the silhouette of a
man on crutches, approaching the camera, moving slowly. The feeling of helplessness and
despair is portrayed. This is contrasted with the speeding car seen in the next scene, giving a sense
of urgency. Once in the office when Neff is about to begin recording his story, the only light is that
from a lamp that we see him turn on. The use of lighting through Venetian blinds is another
common noir characteristic that is present throughout the film. In Phyllis s house, the voice over
specifically mentions the blinds and the shadows from them are very prominent in other scenes,
especially in Keyes s office and during Neff and Phyllis s first kiss.
One of the main characteristics of film noir is the femme fatale. Within noir, the femme fatale
largely abjures traditional romance and passive domesticity, choosing instead to apply her
sexuality to homicidal plots in the service of greed (Boozer 20). Phyllis is the ultimate femme
fatale and is one of the main reasons that Double Indemnity is classified as a film noir. Phyllis
threatens the moral and legal codes of marriage by cheating on and

cheating the public. Mutual victimization is when two or people are involved in a crime then all
of certain the crime goes haywire and the others that are involved in the crime become the
victim. How often have we seen this to occur? For example the first robber get angry at the other
two because they did not divide the money correctly between them so he turn around and robs

this to the fullest but I think it involves when no one can be blame for crime which weird to me. I

Kohlberg s Six Stages Of Moral Development
1.Goldman Sachs should have been punished for its behavior in the years leading up to the
financial crisis. Goldman ended up settling with the federal government for $110 Billion, which I
do not believe was sufficient based on the magnitude of problems created. This amount should
have been much larger, and at minimum they should have forfeited the $14 Billion paid to them
by AIG. (Inside Job, 2011) In addition, AIG should have had the right to sue Goldman Sachs for
fraud. It was in the public s best interest to keep Goldman up and running, however additional
penalties could have been put on a repayment schedule to keep them solvent. Instead, you had
Goldman giving out large bonuses. Executives and those responsible for misdeeds should have
been subject to significant clawbacks of compensation. If the reason they misbehaved and took
inappropriate risks was to raise compensation, losing that compensation would be an appropriate
punishment. 2.Kohlberg s six stages of moral development can be applied to corporations.
Corporations are made up of individuals, and the corporate culture can contribute to an individual s
moral decision making. Mintz tells us that an individual s moral development can be influenced by
corporate culture, especially ethics training. (p. 58) Since the corporate culture can so heavily
influence individual ethical decision making, the stage of moral development of the corporation is
important. An example of Stage 2 preconventional moral

The And Materials For Those With Multiple Disabilities Patricia Krueger Dr. Sharon Kolb Curriculum, Methods, Materials For Those With Multiple Disabilities November 18, 2014 Not Just Horsing Around Imagine yourself as a child with restricted movements and impairments not felt by others your age. Imagine for a longing to be free, free from the restricting walls of the hospital and therapy room. Freedom was a goal that Anne and Tom had for their son William. They wanted freedom of the traditional therapy setting because watching their child make little to no progress therapy session after therapy session left Anne and Tom discouraged. They wanted nothing more for their son than to thrive and develop the new skills that they knew he could. William has hypotonia, or low muscle tone and some overall developmental delays said Anne. His parents set several goals, but their first goal was to get William to learn to walk. Watching his therapy sessions in the traditional setting were painful as parents. They were feeling hopeless with the lack of progress with the physical therapy sessions William was attending. The Physical therapist herself felt that there was not much more that she could do there in the hospital for William. That s when she recommended hippotherapy. Hippotherapy is what would eventually get William to his goal of walking in 3 short months, and though not a therapy goal, one of William s first words was Dolly, the name of a favorite volunteer. • 4. Sweat by Zora Hurston Essay Zora Neale Hurston s short story Sweat takes place in the 1920s in a small African American community in southern Florida. The story takes a look at a woman dominated by her husband, a common issue for many wives in the south during this time. Delia Jones, the protagonist in the story, is a hard working woman who has bought her own home and supported her husband for fifteen years by taking in the laundry of white folks from the next town over. Delia s husband Sykes does not value her or the work she does to support the both of them. Sykes has abused his wife for fifteen years and takes no shame in parading around his fat mistress for all to see. Sykes wants to get rid of Delia and take everything she s ever worked for. Delia, though... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Depending on who is speaking at the time, the tone of Sweat seems either one of anger and frustration, one of hope and determination, or one of sadness and despair. When Sykes speaks the tone is angry and evil because almost everything that comes out of his mouth is negative. In comparison, When Delia speaks the tone rings more of peace, hope, and determination. When the narrator chimes in the tone seems sad because he/she informs the reader of the upsetting truths about Delia s marriage and the many hardships she has had to face throughout the story. Delia represents the good in the story. She remains calm, level headed, and spiritually in tune despite her husband s determination to make her miserable. Once a right pretty li l trick, Delia is now worn and dried out like sugar cane that s been chewed to no end ( Sweat 43). However her soul remains strong as she turns to her spirituality for comfort and hope. She has smarts although uneducated and the fact that she built her own house and now supports her and her husband by washing white people s clothes demonstrates her strength and determination. Delia is a dynamic character as shown early in the story with this quote: She seized the iron skillet from the stove and struck a defensive pose, which act surprised him greatly, coming from her. Sykes dumbfounded reaction to Delia s defensive action allows the reader to assume that this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. The Importance Of The American Dream The road to success is not easy to navigate, but with hard work, drive, and passion, it s possible to achieve the American dream. Tommy Hilfiger. What is the American dream? How is it possible to achieve the American dream if there are large corporations ruining it for the companies trying to reach such dream? The American dream consists of the ideal that every US citizen should have an equal opportunity to achieve success and prosperity through hard work, determination, and initiative. What about those who are starting a new business whose dream is to become a large organization one day? Everyday, large corporations ruin the dream of starting from the bottom and making it to the top to start a business because no opportunity is given,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If the companies such as NestlГ©, PepsiCo, Coca Cola, Unilever, Danone, General Mills, Kellogg s, Mars, Associated British Foods, and Mondelez, are making billions of revenue daily by owning so many companies, how can an average company survive with loss of profit due to competition with other companies owned by these top corporations? Moreover, I know large businesses are ruining the American dream because they leave no opportunity for small business growth, but for a few people, they believe that the American Dream is fine for small businesses to start because they believe that these businesses have an opportunity. According to Kandra Parrot s article, To me business is tied directly into the promises that makes America what it is. How many of us were sold the American dream from a young age? The American dream is defined as the ideal that every US citizen should have an equal opportunity to achieve success and prosperity through hard work, determination, and initiative. (Parrot) She states that she believes that there is opportunity to start a business, but how is it possible to start a new business when companies in a capitalist society take over the markets economically? As a large company, they have no competition to a small business because they have experiences of success and failure, as suppose to a small business where they are striving for their ups, but most definitely receiving their downs, such as investment and inconsistent income. • 6. Recent Work On Follow The Perturbed Leader ( Ftpl )... Recent work on follow the perturbed leader (FTPL) algorithms for adversarial multi armed bandit problem has highlighted the role of the hazard rate of the distribution generating the perturbations. Assuming that the hazard rate is bounded allows one to provide regret analyses for a variety of FTPL algorithms for the multi armed bandit problem. This paper pushes the inquiry into regret bounds for FTPL algorithms beyond the bounded hazard rate condition. There are good reasons to do so: natural distributions such as the uniform and Gaussian violate the condition. We give regret bounds for both bounded support and unbounded support distributions without assuming the hazard rate condition. We also disprove a conjecture that the Gaussian... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The former corresponds to infimal convolution smoothing and the latter corresponds to stochastic (or integral convolution) smoothing (Abernethy et al., 2014). Having a generic framework for understanding perturbations allows one to study a wide variety of online linear optimization games and a number of interesting perturbations. There has also been some work on understanding perturbation approaches in bandit problems. Kujala and Elomaa (2005) and Poland (2005) both showed that using the exponential (actually double exponential/Laplace) distribution in an FTPL algorithm coupled with standard unbiased estimation techniques yields near optimal O(NT logN) regret in T rounds with N arms. Unbiased estimation needs access to arm probabilities that are not explicitly available when using an FTPL algorithm. Neu and BartВґok (2013) introduced the geometric resampling scheme to approximate these probabilities while still guaranteeing low regret. Recently, Abernethy et al. (2015) analyzed FTPL for adversarial multi armed bandits and provided regret bounds under the condition that the hazard rate of the perturbation distribution is bounded. This condition allowed them to consider a variety of perturbation distributions beyond the exponential, such as gamma, Gumbel, Frechet, Pareto, and Weibull. Unfortunately, the bounded hazard rate condition is violated by two of the most widely known distributions: namely the uniform1 and the Gaussian distributions. As a result, the ... • 7. Princess Bride Satire Rob Reiner was the director and mastermind of The Princess Bride, a cult classic phenomenon since its release in 1987. Reiner brought to light the most basic qualities of the fantasy genre while also launching the careers of very many well known actors like Fred Savage of the Wonder Years. Some of the other faces you may recognize are Cary Elwes, Mandy Pantikin, Wallace Shawn, Andre The Giant, and Billy Crystal. The purpose of this filmwas to parody the fantasy genre while also bringing the novel to life. Although the film had a very low budget maxing out at 16,000,000 it still managed to portray the story in a way that will continue to be loved by people of all ages for years to come. In the beginning of the movie Fred Savage plays a young man who stayed... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... My favorite is life is not fair, so many times while watching the film I thought to myself ugh that is not fair. I was so aggravated that things never worked out as planned for the star crossed lovers until I heard the conversation between the grandfather and the grandson, the grandfather looks at the grandson and says Who says life is fair? Where is that written? and that really hits home, although Buttercup and Wesley did not have a fair life so to speak they had a good life even if at times it was hard. Another lesson that we can learn from The Princess Bride is we sacrifice for those things we believe in. Inigo Montoya for example sacrificed years of his life to study swordplay because he believed he would one day find the man who killed his father. Although his sacrifice turned out positively the story of Inigo reminds that if we want something, we must constantly sacrifice for the things we want no matter how frivolous it may seem. I also took away the lesson that reputation may not always be the truth, take Fezzik for example he was a giant and seemed very evil and scary then we get to know him and see things from his ... Brand loyalty was very important and could be increased only by advertising over time. After setting up the functional units, I had to decide on which product I would purchase and sell. At that point, my strategy was to build a factory to purchase raw materials and to make them products in order to sell them through my department store. Therefore, I decided to make and sell Milk, Tv Dinner, Strawberry, and apple Crisp. When the department store started operating, as a manager I had to plan and act even more carefully than before. By time, and as the demand and brand were increasing I started to increase the prices respectively. I had to advertise my products heavily because they were new and I was aiming for brand awareness. • 9. Book Review Of Sherman Alexie s Superman And Me In his essay, Superman and Me, Sherman Alexie explains how books allowed him to escape the societal expectations for Native Americans. Alexie was raised on a Spokane tribe reservation in Washington state. He portrays his childhood at the reservation as revolving around literature. He then describes how his father piled literature in every room of his house, from Western action novels to comics to books about the Vietnam War. Alexie claims that a Superman comic allowed him to teach himself how to read, by looking at the drawings, dialogue, and the script and making assumptions. As a result of learning to read at the age of three, he advanced quickly in school. Alexie then compares his advancement with a non Indian child s, explaining how he received little recognition due to his race and society s expectation for Native American children. He believes that he was too smart, too arrogant, and too determined to fail. In order to save his future, Alexie read anything from cereal boxes to auto repair manuals. He also stayed up late into the night reading books to gain additional knowledge. As a result of all of this reading, dedication, and perseverance, Alexie was able to go to college. Earning a college degree prepared him for his future career: a successful writer. He writes novels, short stories and poems. Along with writing, he visits many Native American schools. Ironically, the one match I remember best from that three year reign is one that never took place: a 1965 title versus title match between me and Bruno Sammartino. The only satisfaction I derive from thinking about it is that I once again and for the final time, as it turned out repaid Toots Mondt for the way he had treated me and all the boys almost 30 years earlier in southern California. Riding partners have come and gone, laws have evolved, and the public s perception of bikers has, thankfully, improved. The biking community is in a state of perpetual change, just like the world around it, but one thing remains constant: leather jackets. Both stylish and secure, leather has been relied upon by bikers throughout history to keep them safe from the elements and protect them during falls and crashes. The leather jacket is as synonymous with motorcycles as two wheels and an engine, but an increasing number of bikers are leaving behind their leather jackets in favor of alternatives of a different material, such as mesh or Kevlar. Some readers may be unfamiliar with the latter, which hasn t received as much publicity as some other protective materials, but if Kevlar motorcycle jackets can gain global attention, it is quite possible they can dethrone their leather opponents. But what exactly does a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Leather jackets tend to offer very poor ventilation, even when they are fitted with mesh vents. Leather, as most of us know but do our best to ignore, is made from the skin of animals, most commonly cows. At its own discretion, after the Soviet Union s refusal of America s extent of influence and relief in the European continent, the U.S. was free to do as it pleased regarding attempts of foreign assistance. Secretary of State in the U.S. at the time, George Marshall, proposed the Marshall Plan , originally called the European Recovery Program , in June of 1947, during his speech at Harvard University. Marshall s argument was to provide 13 billion U.S. dollars, about 5% of the American gross domestic product during that period, to European nations to bail them out of their continental crisis post World War II. The plan was in operation for four years, rebuilding war terrorized countries with several goals put in place by the United States. • 35. Neoclassicism and the Enlightenment Essay Neoclassicism and the Enlightenment The Enlightenment was a time of great innovation and evolution. One of the most significant movements which owes at least the majority of its beginnings to the Enlightenment is the architectural and artistic movement of Neoclassicism. This Neoclassicism of the mid eighteenth to mid nineteenth centuries is one that valued ancient Greek, Roman, and Etruscan artistic ideals. These ideals, including order, symmetry, and balance, were considered by many European generations to be the highest point of artistic excellence. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The pettiness of these movements had created a backlash and these thinkers and art critics welcomed the harsher and more ordered Neoclassical style as they began to swing the art pendulum in the opposite direction. One of the primary causes in the rise of Neoclassicism in the mid eighteenth century was the expansion of what was previously called a classical education. By 1750 Italian tourism was already a full blown industry, with guides and guidebooks circulating throughout Europe. As a part of any young man s education, he now had to make the artistic tour of Italy, especially Florence, Rome, and Naples. This was not just a quick visit to a couple museums; rather, it was a lengthy, often times more than a year, and in depth study of the rich trove of art that these cities had to offer. It was supplemented with classes and lectures at the museums and time taken after these to sketch or paint these precious works to take home. The proliferation of these sketches would compound and any aspiring artist was also then required to study these works. The increased influence and awareness of Greek and Roman art in the studies of the developing artists would soon begin to show in their designs. One of the most significant reasons that a renewed interest in Italy has arisen was the recently found sites of Pompeii and Herculaneum. The excavation of these sites revealed massive amounts ... The clean drinking water supplied to millions of people and wildlife species are at serious risk. The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection recently fined a drilling company after methane gas leaked from a drilling operation and seeped into nearby residential wells ( Marcellus Shale ). This is not a common occurrence; the problem of methane gas migrating into ground water is a very serious problem. You can not drink water, shower or wash clothes with water that has been contaminated with methane. There is documented proof, including video that actually shows water from a kitchen faucet being ignited into flames with a lighter, the water containing enough methane gas to become flammable. Property owners that sold land rights to gas companies are now second guessing their decisions and suffering the dilemma of tainted ground water and well water. Therefore, developing the Marcellus Shale formation requires very large amounts of fresh water and fluid disposal. Recent inspections by the state have uncovered violations that threaten Pennsylvania water resources and its environment. Violations include poorly constructed and dangerous water retention ponds, inadequate erosion and sediment controls, improper waste and fluid disposal and also improper and unregistered withdrawals of water from streams. Corrections even includes some things done to offenders prior to conviction, such as detention in jails pending adjudication of guilt and programs for offenders who are diverted out of the criminal system. Resources and expertise for erecting jails or prisonfacilities were non existent. A few jails were used as short term housing facilities for those awaiting trial or imposition of a sentence. Some offenders served short jail terms, but one reason jails were not used as frequently as in later times was due to economics. Even today, jails and prisons are a financial drain on society. The Symbolic Use of Nature in Hawthorne s The Scarlet Letter The Symbolic Use of Nature in The Scarlet Letter In Nathaniel Hawthorne s classic The Scarlet Letter, nature plays a very important and symbolic role. Hawthorne uses nature to convey the mood of a scene, to describe characters, and to link the natural elements with human nature. Many of the passages that have to do with nature accomplish more than one of these ideas. All throughout the book, nature is incorporated into the story line. The deep symbolism conveyed by certain aspects of nature helps the reader gain a deeper understanding of the plight and inner emotions of the characters in the novel. Hawthorne s moods or prevailing feelings during certain scenes are revealed to the reader through nature.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Another example of Hawthorne s use of nature to set the mood for a scene is shown when he describes the weather and conditions when Hester and Pearl secretly meet with Arthur Dimesdale deep within the forest. The day was chill and somber. Overhead was a gray expanse of cloud, slightly stirred, however, by a breeze; so that a gleam of flickering sunshine might now and then be seen a its solitary play along the path (159). Hawthorne describes a cold and gray day. This description gives the reader a sense of isolation as well as slight depression. However, the mention of a slight breeze that ruffles the canopy of the forest just enough to let in little flickers of sunshine conveys a fleeting ray of hope that seems to coexist with the gloominess in the scene. In many scenes during the book, moods or prevailing feelings are established through descriptions of the natural surroundings of the characters. This aspect of Hawthorne s writing makes the book deeper and more emotional. Nature is often used symbolically in The Scarlet Letter to describe people physically, emotionally, and socially. Hawthorne uses this technique very effectively. He gives the reader a good feel for the true psyche of some of the characters during different parts of the story. • 50. Characteristics Of Femme Fatale Visually, film noirs are often dark and expressive to mimic the moral ambiguity in which the characters find themselves (Fluck 385). This visual darkness is portrayed using low key lighting and the number of scenes that take place in low lit interiors or exteriors at night. The tone is set through visuals, immediately, as under the opening credits the audience sees the silhouette of a man on crutches, approaching the camera, moving slowly. The feeling of helplessness and despair is portrayed. This is contrasted with the speeding car seen in the next scene, giving a sense of urgency. Once in the office when Neff is about to begin recording his story, the only light is that from a lamp that we see him turn on. The use of lighting through Venetian blinds is another common noir characteristic that is present throughout the film. In Phyllis s house, the voice over specifically mentions the blinds and the shadows from them are very prominent in other scenes, especially in Keyes s office and during Neff and Phyllis s first kiss. One of the main characteristics of film noir is the femme fatale. Within noir, the femme fatale largely abjures traditional romance and passive domesticity, choosing instead to apply her sexuality to homicidal plots in the service of greed (Boozer 20). Goldman ended up settling with the federal government for $110 Billion, which I do not believe was sufficient based on the magnitude of problems created. This amount should have been much larger, and at minimum they should have forfeited the $14 Billion paid to them by AIG. (Inside Job, 2011) In addition, AIG should have had the right to sue Goldman Sachs for fraud. It was in the public s best interest to keep Goldman up and running, however additional penalties could have been put on a repayment schedule to keep them solvent. Instead, you had Goldman giving out large bonuses. Executives and those responsible for misdeeds should have been subject to significant clawbacks of compensation. If the reason they misbehaved and took inappropriate risks was to raise compensation, losing that compensation would be an appropriate punishment. 2.Kohlberg s six stages of moral development can be applied to corporations.
