This document provides an overview of different types of computer networks. It defines local area networks (LANs) as networks constrained to a small geographic area like within a building. Personal area networks (PANs) connect devices like smartphones and tablets close to an individual. Wide area networks (WANs) connect locations across large distances, with the largest being the Internet. Metropolitan area networks (MANs) connect LANs within the same region. Storage area networks (SANs) provide block-level storage access. Virtual private networks (VPNs) create private networks within public networks like the Internet. Peer-to-peer networks have no dedicated servers, with all computers acting as both clients and servers.
