2. Irrelevance of
communication
What is it?
It is where someone is told something they don’t
need to know.
How does it distract you?
It can lead to you becoming confused with the
information you need and the information that you
don’t.
How can you avoid the distraction?
You could make a list of the information that you will
need so if someone does give you unneeded
information, just check the list of information so you
can get back on track with what you are saying.
3. Poor Proofreading
What is it?
It is where someone has missed some mistakes
when they have proofread either because they were
chatting to somebody or they were bored while they
checked and didn’t focus completely on proofreading.
How is it caused?
It can be due to a distraction being present, a friend
wanting to chat or a phone could be ringing and you.
4. Disability
If someone with a hearing disablement
may not hear somebody who doesn’t
have a loud voice because of the
disablement.
To get around this, quite often people
with any sort of disablement relating to
their hearing learn how to lip read which
makes it important for the person talking
not to be facing away from the other
person.
5. Distractions
Any noises in the room that people are
in can distract people who are trying to
listen. For example, when people are
talking under the other person and is not
addressed can distract the attention of
others.
This can be solved by the talker being
more assertive to the others who talk
underneath them.
6. Language Difficulties
This can make it hard to listen to others
as an accent can make it hard to
understand someone by making one
word sound like another.
You can solve this in a number of ways,
including lip reading so that you can
understand what they say without
listening. You could also ask someone
else to translate what they say as long
as they can understand what they say.
7. Alternate Viewpoints
This can cause issues in a discussion as
somebody may not be prepared for
certain arguments and not be able to
counter argue as well as they could of.
To get around this, prepare for any
counter arguments before-hand to
maximise the effectiveness of a speech
or discussion.
8. Jargon
This can disrupt a discussion or
presentation as the person talking can
either write too much and confuse people
with long and complicated words or not go
into enough detail and people stop listening
to what they are saying.
You can avoid this by deciding on a set
amount to write about and avoid using
complicated terms where possible. You can
also ask if everyone understands and
explain if somebody doesn’t.
