Barcelona is a finalist for the prestigious European Green Capital Award for its eco-friendly initiatives like 156 km of bike lanes, lots of green areas like Collserola and Ciutadella parks, eco-transports including hydrogen buses and electric trams, extensive recycling with separate bins for plastic, paper, glass, organic waste and other litter, new buildings with solar panels, and schools participating in the AGENDA 21 project for sustainability inspired by the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro.
