Banned books are those prohibited by law or restricted access, while challenged books are those unsuccessfully attempted to be banned. Books have faced censorship throughout history for reasons such as racial issues, violence, political bias, and age appropriateness. Notable examples include 'New English Canaan', the first banned book in the U.S., and 'Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone', which was banned for challenging religious beliefs.

2. What is Banned Book?
• Banned books are books that’s are prohibited by law or to which free
access is not permitted by other means.
• Challenged books are books that have been tried to ban but have been
unsuccessful in their attempt.

3. Why are books challenged?
• Throughout history, books have been challenged because of the way they are
written.
• Some of these books have been banned or censored in school due to the following:
• Racial Issues
• Violence or negativity
• Presence of Witchcraft
• Political Bias
• And Age Inappropriate

4. New English Canaan
• Thomas Morton’s “New English Canaan” is a three volume work collecting Morton’s
compassionate observations about Native Americans.
• The New English Canaan was the first book that was banned in the United States.
• It was banned because it told his side in one of the pivotal battles for the cultural
soul of the New World.

5. Harry Potter and the sorcerer’s stone
• This book was banned for challenging people’s religious beliefs

6. Scary Stories to tell in the dark
• This book was banned by The American Library Association, making its
way to number one on the list for most challenged books.
• The book was first challenged by the school board in Michigan, due to
complaints from teachers at Liviona Elementary School.
