What is Banned Book?
• Banned books are books that’s are prohibited by law or to which free
access is not permitted by other means.
• Challenged books are books that have been tried to ban but have been
unsuccessful in their attempt.
Why are books challenged?
• Throughout history, books have been challenged because of the way they are
written.
• Some of these books have been banned or censored in school due to the following:
• Racial Issues
• Violence or negativity
• Presence of Witchcraft
• Political Bias
• And Age Inappropriate
New English Canaan
• Thomas Morton’s “New English Canaan” is a three volume work collecting Morton’s
compassionate observations about Native Americans.
• The New English Canaan was the first book that was banned in the United States.
• It was banned because it told his side in one of the pivotal battles for the cultural
soul of the New World.
Harry Potter and the sorcerer’s stone
• This book was banned for challenging people’s religious beliefs
Scary Stories to tell in the dark
• This book was banned by The American Library Association, making its
way to number one on the list for most challenged books.
• The book was first challenged by the school board in Michigan, due to
complaints from teachers at Liviona Elementary School.
