Mangrove forests play an important role in climate change mitigation by sequestering large amounts of carbon. Deforestation of mangroves releases 0.02-0.12 petagrams of carbon into the atmosphere annually, accounting for around 10% of global emissions despite mangroves only covering 0.7% of tropical forests. Mangroves sequester about 100 tons of carbon dioxide per hectare both above and below ground. Their sediment acts as an important carbon reservoir, storing carbon to a depth of 3-4 meters. Restoring mangrove forests could help remove carbon from the atmosphere to mitigate climate change.
