This document discusses the vulnerability of India's coastal zones to climate change. It notes that coastal zones are important regions for India, containing major cities and over a third of the population, but are vulnerable to sea level rise, cyclones, and changes in temperature and precipitation from climate change. Vulnerability is defined as the degree to which a system is impacted by or resilient to climate hazards, and is determined by exposure, sensitivity, and adaptive capacity. The document outlines how these factors contribute to India's coastal vulnerability and the socioeconomic impacts the country may face, such as slowed economic growth and increased food insecurity.

2. WHAT IS CLIMATE?WHAT IS CLIMATE?
The weather condition prevailing in an area in
general or over a longer period.
WHAT IS CLIMATE CHANGE??WHAT IS CLIMATE CHANGE??
Climate change refers to a change in the state of
the climate that can be identified by changes in
the mean and/or variability of its properties, that
persists an extended period, typically decade or
longer. (IPCC,2007)

4. PROFILE OF COASTAL
ZONES
Important & critical region for
India, endowed with a coastline of over
7500km.
3 out of 4 major cities are located in the
coastal regions.
(Mumbai,kolkata,Chennai)
Total area occupied by the coastal
districts :379610sqkm.
Average population density of coastal
area is 1.5times of national average
5. VULNERABILITYVULNERABILITY
Vulnerability is the degree to which a system will
respond to a given change in climate, including
beneficial & harmful effects. It is also a function of the
character, magnitude, and rate of climate change &
variation to which a system is exposed its sensitivity
and adaptive capacity.
According to IPCC,the extent to which climate change
may damage or harm a system
It has 2 elements.
a)the severity of the impact of the shock
b)a person's resilience to a given shock
[resilience is the indicator of adaptive capacity]
6. INDIA'S VULNERABILITYINDIA'S VULNERABILITY
Vulnerability of coastal zones to climate change related
natural hazards are:-(a)sea level rise
(b)tropical cyclones
(c)temperature & precipitation changes
Vulnerability to climate change is influenced by:
>ongoing social & economic shocks
>rapid population growth
>urbanization
>industrialization
7. DOUBLE EXPOSUREDOUBLE EXPOSURE
Concept of DOUBLE EXPOSURE indicates that
the climate change and globalization are
occuring simultaneously.
Regions,sectors,ecosystems and social groups
will be confronted by both the impacts of climate
change and consequences of globalization
9. EXPOSUREEXPOSURE
The degree of climate stress upon a particular unit
of analysis.
Climate stress:
a)longterm climate condition
b)climate variability
c)magnitude and frequency of extreme
events
11. ADAPTIVE CAPACITYADAPTIVE CAPACITY
Capability to adapt
ADAPTATION—adjustment in natural or human systems in
response to actual or expected climatic stimuli or their
effects.
Function of-- *wealth
*technology
*education
*information
*infrastructure
*social capital
12. SOCIO-ECONOMIC IMPACTSSOCIO-ECONOMIC IMPACTS
Climate change will slow down the economic
growth of a region as well as the establishment
of healthy society
It will lower the incomes Of vulnerable
populations and increase the absolute number
of people at risk of hunger, poverty and even
survival
Even small scale increase in temperature will
prompt food prices as its impact is remarkable
in agriculture
