1. Bangkok Will Sink by 2025
Due to Global warming and Natural Sinking
Bangkok, Thailand
Every year due to rising seas and overuse of ground water is resulting in Bangkok
sinking between 10 centimeter averages. As the population passes nine million, the huge
uses of water from the city’s wells are draining the supplies of the underground aquifers.
Without water pressure to steady them, the sand and clay layers of there water traps are
breaking down. As the earth compresses, the city above sinks, making it increasingly
exposed to flooding.
Also, global warming is causing seas to rise and ending up sinking Bangkok. Thailand’s
National Disaster Warning Centre indicated that global warming is causing sea level to
raise about 1.7mm average every year. 'Over the last hundred years, sea levels raised ten
times faster then their 2000-year average, but in the next hundred years the rate of sea
level rise could increase dramatically.’
Mr. Tara Buakamsri, Greenpeace Thailand of Climate and Energy Campaigner also said
'If current global warming trends continue, cities like Bangkok, London and New York
will end up below sea level displacing millions and causing massive economic damage'.
They predicted that if government does not do anything in 20 year, Thailand will be at
least 50 centimeters to one meter under water.
The few solutions have been found by Thai-Canadian engineering team. They are
proposing to pump clean treated water drawn from the Chao Phraya and other rivers of
the city, 50 to 600 meters down into the aquifers to stop the land from sinking. Also the
Other solution was to construct a massive dyke to protect it from rising seas and
increasingly violent storms.
They had massive of solution, but they did not showed any progress pass few years.
