Why do artists use a website?
Benefits of a Website?
• It offers more publicity for the band or artist allowing them to expand their
audience.
• Artists can advertise on a bigger scale. Websites are usually the first place a
person of interest will visit so advertisement of merch, songs or even just
advertising their social media allows multiple platforms for advertisement in the
future.
• The audience can access and view all of the band’s or artist’s work online –
updates, songs, albums, tours, merchandise.
• A website allows the band/artist to sell their music and merchandise, giving fans
access to more of their stuff.
• Updates can be posted, for example, days counting down until a new single or
album is released. News about the band or the artist can also be sometimes
viewed on their websites, usually under a label ‘About’ on most websites.
• You own your website. There is no fear of being deleted because you are being
too “commercial” or violating any 3rd-party terms of service.
• You can claim your brand on the web and prevent others from taking your name.
• You are creating your own brand equity, instead of relying on 3rd party websites.
• You increase your web exposure.
• You develop a stable presence on the web. You never know if that 3rd party
website will exist in the future or be as relevant. What happens to all that work
that you put into the 3rd party to help them create THEIR brand not yours (e.g.
MP3.com shutting down)? How much time was devoted by artists on Myspace
the past 5 years? All of your “friends” left and unless you captured their email
through your official site, then you are in trouble.
• You control your search engine results. Be ranked #1 for your artist/band name.
If you have your own dedicated domain name it is easier and also you can
receive search “juice” or “pagerank” to your official page by linking to your
official site from social sites as well as others linking to you.
How to make the best website?
• Identify your target market: Who are they? Which demographic groups do they
belong to? What do they like to do? How do they see themselves? How will your
business or website influence their lives?
• Define your brand identity: If you had to describe your brand in three words,
what would they be? What is the vision that motivates your brand? Think of your
brand’s personality and extract from it tangible traits like colors, vocabulary and
style.
• Getting your site to rank prominently on search results is one of the most
valuable ways to increase your traffic – include key words, text, links, tags.
• Keep visitors engaged with the content you are producing – make the site easy to
navigate and ensure majority of information is concise when possible.
