They want the publicity materials to include a four fold CD case with CD, a poster and a point of sale to help promote their band. They also want one of the products to incorporate a smart material to add visual appeal to the set of publicity materials. Promotion is important for this new bands events. I will design and make them a set of publicity materials to help successfully promote the band. The publicity material will include a four fold CD case with CD, a poster and a point of sale to help promote their band. One of the products will also incorporate a smart material to add visual appeal to the set of publicity materials. All my graphic products must share the same corporate identity, meet the specification requirements and be appropriate for the new bands target market.

Material Medium Density Fibreboard (MDF) Styrofoam Cheap Rigid Can stick design on it Make moulds for vac forming Acrylic Card Paper Easy to model Rigid Light Waterproof Cheap Easy to model Easy to put design on Can be laminated Very Cheap Very easy to model Easy laminated Complicated to model Unsuitable for P.O.S Can be heavy Takes a long time to model Expensive Needs sealing Hard to put design onto Takes a long time to model Difficult to put design on Unsuitable for packaging Expensive Needs covering to give a good finish Difficult to laminate if thick Too flexible Not suitable for packaging Good Points Bad Points Analysis One-Off (Jobbing) Production Method This is when a single product is made. Every item made will be different, to meet the customer’s individual and specific requirements. This type of production is very labour intensive but efficient for materials. An example is a one off CD case for a new Music Band. Description Applying to my project Finish Laminate Sticky Back Plastic Industrial Practices Useful for posters Increases durability Gives high-gloss finish Wipe clean surface Prevents paper cuts Good Points Gives glossy finish Cheap Expensive Eventually peels and blisters Doesn’t increase strength of the product Difficult to use Bad Points Analysis Printing Techniques Printing with four colours Something like a cereal packet is printed with BLUE YELLOW RED and BLACK. (The primary colours and black) These are called the PROCESS COLOURS and in printing are Called CYAN (blue) MAGENTA (red) YELLOW and K (black) or CMYK for short by mixing different combinations of the four process colours together all the other colours can be made. Similar to the way you mix COMPLEMENTARY and HARMONIOUS colours. It is often used on all types of packaging including card, paper and plastic labels. CD Sleeve P.O.S Poster
. Lenticular Polypropylene Sheet An unusual characteristic of this sheet is that it appears much thicker than it is and objects placed on top appear to sink under the surface. Thermocolour Sheet A self-adhesive sheet material which has been printed with liquid crystal ‘ink’. Colour changes occur above 27 degrees. Plenty of scope when applying promotional information to products. Smart Colours (Thermochromic Ink) A Range of pigments which react to changes in temperature or glow in the dark. Simply mixed with acrylic paint they can make designs /products really exciting. HOW SMART MATERIALS WILL BE USED IN MY PRODUCTS? Smart Materials Environmental Issues Packaging designers need to think carefully about the materials which they use. They need to take all the information on this page into account, therefore I will have to do the same thing before designing my products. Less is more When designing my products I will try to produce as little waste materials as possible by designing a CD case which fits closely to a CD. I will avoid designing blister packs to protect the CD because these are wasteful on materials. The most creative design work for my type of products often uses simple materials such as card and printed paper to achieve sutle and sophisticated packages. They are also cheaper to produce. My CD case must fold flat for easy storage. Striking graphic images and typography on my products will compensate for its minimal materials Recycling Often recycled papers and cards, rather than newly pulped and treated materials, are adequate for the job. This is true in relation to the promotional products which I will be manufacturing. All my products will be primarily made from paper and card which are both recyclable materials. Refill Packaging costs for future CD’s could be reduced because once my CD case has been produced it would be capable of storing new CD’s in the future. The P.O.S will be made from strong and durable card to ensure it has a long life and the poster will be laminated to help prolong its life. To help ensure my products are reusable I will make them easy to operate. Litter Being the designer I will design my products so there is little chance of small pieces falling of and I will also display environmentally friendly symbols on the products to help remind the users to be as environmentally friendly as possible. Biodegradability Biodegradability materials are those which decompose quickly. Unfortunately this means that they also only give limited protection to the product. Since my products don’t require high protection they will all be made from biodegradable materials to ensure they are environmentally friendly.
Vacuum Forming Research Analysis The vacuum forming process works by removing air from underneath soft and flexible thermoplastic sheet-allowing atmospheric pressure to push the plastic down onto a mould. The most common thermoplastics used are polythene, PVC, high-density polystyrene, ABS and acrylic. Advantages Quick Easy Cheap Re-usable Disadvantages Low melting points Air get trapped in cavities How could Vacuum Forming be used in my Products? In this space summarise all your findings from the research activities which you have carried out. *Explain what you have to make in this project *Explain what you have learnt from your task analysis *Explain what you have learnt by looking at existing products *Explain your findings from looking at industrial practices *Explain you findings from looking at printing techniques *Explain how you will ensure your products will be environmentally friendly.
