42. Research Materials Plastic is a good material to make a plastic toy fro kids. If you buy an expensive material toy then it might end up breaking. Testing different MaterialsThe tools that I this model used to make this were a machine, colors, and woodThe health and safety for making this model was to wear goggles while the laser cutter was cutting the model and also to stay awake from the laser cutter abet.If this was in a industry they would use a special machine like how I have used one to cut the product for me and they will vanish they product to make it look stand out and catch the users eyes.My final product is going to be made out of this material because it is strong and it can be recycled easily.Conclusion of my modelsWhile I was testing different materials for my final design models, I thought that the best material to use for my final was wood (MDF) because it gives the look that I want for my final product and also MDF is cheap to use and that i don't have to spend a lot on my product and i can also make profit while I made my product . The other materials that i used to make my models were card, cardboard, plastazote and acrylic . I didn't like my model that was made out of card and cardboard but my models that were made out o f plastazote was ok but it can break easily while the user will be using it and my fourth model that I made was made out of acrylic which was ok but it was hard and some of my shapes had sharp edges and that will hit the child easily so for my final product i will use wood MDF which i like.Page Number 17

Toosl used testing different MaterialsCutting MatWhen cutting out my language learning toy and other pieces of my work, I had to use a cutting mat to protect the surface but also it gives a flat surface to cut on. The safety issues of cutting mat are:-The safety issues of a cutting mat are that it must be placed on a flat surface so that it doesn’t fall and slip of.Scalpel The scalpel was used when I needed to cut my charity box and also to cut out the net of my shape. This inform me to use cheap materials so I can sell it as a cheap price.In this graph we can see that more parents prepare safety toys then Aesthetical.Here it shows that colours are the main common thing that attract parents attention. 74. Research Analysis As a part of my research I did a questionnaire to find more about parents interest toward a learning toy. This can help me in my project to make/design a better toy for my target audience. From this questionnaire I found out what type of toy would most parents buy for their children's.I also look at exiting product to see how its made I found out a lot about different materials that existing toys are made. I know now why some toys are expensive than other that due to their materials that they have used because some materials are expensive and are strong which then last long.After I did a mood board I collected range of toys. I looked at an educational learning toys from which I found out that most of the toys that were made for young children were bright and vibrant colors.From this research I found out that how to look at other things that has something got to do with your project to help you out and also to give ideas through your work. My opinion to all this that I have done is that is interesting and you get to learn facts about children that you might have not known before.The research that I have collected is useful for my project and I will use it through my project to help me put with it if I didn’t really get anythingThe next step that I am going to take is going to be designing toys that I might have in mind of what I will do and what I will make when I have finished all my paper work which I am half way through.Page Number 24

Social, Moral, Economical issues Whilst I was coming to my final product decision on how I was going to create my design I had a look at all the different toys from different stores and the way they were designed were simply. I looked at one store which was TOYS R US because I like they store toys because they all got to do with language and educational.As I was thinking about my final product I was thinking of the gender as a moral factor. I could make it fro boys and girls because it will help them learn their time and a language.The toy clock should be easily played with for the age group that I have done it for. If I was to do it for kids younger then I think that they should used simply things like an alphabet toy with an image of a image to present the alphabet.Economic issues are important when making any sort of product that will be batched produced as cost and material, staff should be considered that I have designed a template which the manufacturer can use to manufacture my product that I have made. Once I have finished the design I only have to print it out on the laser cutter and just put the parts together. My product is not going to cost a lot because all the materials that I have used for it are all cheap. When the materials are bought in bulks it becomes more cheaper and the profit starts to increase. My product is made using MDF WOOD. MDF WOOD can be recycled and it is an recycled material.Page Number 25

78. The idea for this chair can from a perfume bottle. This chair can be made using foam.Note - This folder has a great deal of modelling , you can however generate a wide range if drawn ideas with a smaller number of models and still access the top marks. I got the idea for this design by looking at people sitting on the stairs. You can sit on the second step and the first step will support your back and your feet can rest on the last step. I will make this design out of plain cardboard and when finished will paint it the desired colour.Swing Chair - This can be attached to a ceiling. The top part of this chair will be made of cardboard and the bottom can be made of fabric and rubber. Initial Ideas....

79. Layers of cardboard stuck together to make the chairs stronger and give more support.These chairs are quite straightforward and simple. They don’t require a lot of stuff to make just cardboard , scissors and glue; however these chairs are quite strong because of their structure as you can see above. 80. This is quite a unique design as it is a swing chair that looks more or less like a single sofa!It is a simple design made entirely out of foam, strings, painted lolly sticks, and glue.Model 1

81. This is the same design as the previous one apart from the only variation which is the material. When made out of foam it didn’t look appealing so I made it again but this time using corrugated plastic.Model 2

82. This is quite a modern piece of furniture. It is basically a chair that can be sat on in two ways. 1st one sit on a closed box shaped chair. 2nd one you can open the chair and make it higher.This chair is more traditional than modern. It is very simple and boring. It is very common and old fashion. The base can easily be made out of cardboard with the fabric on top to make it more comfortable and soft. 83. This is a model of one of my designs seen earlier. There are two ways in which this functions, you can either sit on it when it is closed- like the top two pictures- or you can open it up to increase the height- like in the bottom two pictures. There is a spring connected the two pieces, and this is what increases the height of the chair. Model 3

84. similarThis is a very modern and different design, as you can see above this is a two-seater chair. It very much resembles an orange peel from the side This chair could be made using foam or aeroply. Aeroply is the best for curves and bending.Curvy Initial Idea

85. This is actually a two-seater chair model. The idea is for the two people to slide into the loop and lay down there in a relaxing position. I have taken images from various angles in order to give a clear image of the design.Model 4

86. Moving on from the previous design, this model is just a variation of it. Basically, instead of the round loop, this design has a pentagon shape at the top which is connecting the two sides of the chairs. Also this model is for a sitting-up position as I have given it some legs to stand on. Model 5

87. This is yet another variation of my previous design. As you can see it is only the top that has changed again. This time it is joined again but not like before. As you can see, I have fan folded the card at the top to make an arch kind of shape that is connected the two sides of the chair. Model 6

88. In the first picture you can see on of my earlier designs - what I actually started with. In the last picture you can see my recent design. My recent models have changed the position of sitting from a laying down position [first picture] to a more formal and sitting up position [last picture]. In order to make the standing chair I had to try and make the foam bend and stay in that position. After many unsuccessful tries to glue it in that position I tried to experiment with the line bender and the foam – which surprisingly worked really well, as you can see in the picture on the left.Line BendedModel 7

89. While making this curvy chair I used and experimented with many materials like foam and card; however, I think that the best material was aeroply mainly because of its qualities. It looks like wood and is flexible /bendy. Before using this material for any further for modelling or for a final project I experimented with some of its properties.Below you can the test I did on Aeroply:As you can see above a single layer of aeroply can bend nicley, but too much bending can cause it to rupture. Therefore to give it support and strength I ‘laminated’ two layers of aeroply together using wood adhesive. After doing this, you can not break the aeroply no matter how much you try.Experimenting with Aeroply...

90. The design is actually the same as one of my earlier designs, where the person is required to lay down. I have placed a mannequin in the pictures on the left just to show this. I chose to make this model out of Aeroply because it is more bendable and strong material.Model 8

91. This is a further variation of my last design. In the previous design, the top of the two chairs was joined to give a round shape, whereas in this one I have changed the top and now have them wedged together by slotting one into a opening made on the other one. This is clearly shown in the last picture above.Model 9

92. This chair is a modification of one of my card model shown earlier. It is made from aeroply and the difference between this model and the previous aeroply model is that, firstly, this is a sitting-position chair. And secondly like the card model, these are two separate chairs that are slotted together from the top. A closer look at this is shown in the last picture.Model 10

93. Wooden DowelsThis is another model that I made from aeroply. It looks pretty similar to the previous one, and the only thing different with this is the way this chair is held together. This chair stuck together by the use of glue, and an additional piece of wood under it to give it extra support, I have also stuck a piece of wooden dowel at the top joining the chairs more effectively. This is the final model I made – this too is made out of Aeroply and looks similar to the previous two models made, the difference in this is that these two chairs are held together by wires that run through the two laminated layers. The wire was covered with glue before it was inserted to ensure that it stays stuck together.Model 12

96. Product...I took pictures of the progress I was making, I decided to make 3 separate games, the first game is show in this picture in the distance, it involved me making 12 of the toy pieces in different colours. This was the easiest part of the overall making, I used the ideas I had gotten from my models to make them with acrylic plastic, the had the top and the bottom as the full shape however the insides were thing rings, this not only saved material but made the parts lighter for the child. This design was made for all 36 pieces. In the second image it shows the second game which is based around the idea of simple three lettered words being spelt horizontally across the game. Both of these images show that I decided to make the game pieces first and make the product around it so I was sure it would be suitably proportioned.

97. I decided when designing my third game that I would cut out white backgrounds and then place the black backgrounds into the spaces. This image shows just how the white backgrounds were cut out from the laser cutter, the inside words have been purposely removed.To make the parts that displayed the language part of the toy I had to carefully removed the middle parts from the words and replace them with the other parts so it was completely sealed together. This proved difficult because the parts were smaller due to the design.To make the third game up to high standards the main part was to make sure the words were clear and professional looking, to do this I placed them on tape as shown in the image and then placed the larger pieces onto them, this secured them and helped them go into the correct places.

98. When I moved on to making my box I had to consider how I would place it together, I decided to rout the edges of the box so that the sides slot nicely into place, I would add wood glue to increase the strength of the joints. I routed these by using a machine set at a specific angle. This is the main method of joints used throughout the making of my product. The roof was more complicated, I had to decide hoe the cross over would work. Eventually I chose to rout the front and back and the sides however the slanted parts I decided to cut at an angle through trial and testing. I then would place the parts into the correct places until they fit properly.

99. When I originally designed my product I thought that because the top of the Parthenon would have been hollow maybe I could store the pieces in there, however after considering the size of the pieces I realised this would not have been a solution. Therefore I came up with the idea of storing the pieces in an additional draw, I made the draw out of MDF and separated it into three sections one for each game, the draw had to be measured accurately so the parts were securely in place. I added a front to the draw so when it closed it became part of the box, also I added a handle so the child would be able to get into the draw and therefore play the game easier.

100. I attached the base of the Parthenon using wood glue, however the poles are glued into place to the base of the box, this makes it more stable.This is the base of the roof, I had to line it up with the poles to ensure everything was accurate.The box is measured so the draw slides in and out accurately, the box is made from beech wood it is joint together using routed joints and wood glue. To make sure the box is accurate I added material, however I then cut this down when I was sure this was accurate. I then had to use wood filler to fill in the gaps from where the routing was not accurate, I had to then sand this down using a hand held machine.

101. The draw is jointed together using teeth, the front of the box is glued onto the draw and a handle is drilled into place, the draw is separated into three sections, this is for each of the games, the child can keep the draw open while playing with the toy as shown in the first picture. The last game is the one that is specific to the child and the project brief. It teaches the child simple Italian words, the plastic toys slot onto the poles, once the poles are finished the roof is then added to add an authentic look. The child is able to hold the pieces safely because they are big, also they are not toxic. These are all safety factors which I considered when designing.

102. This is an image of the first game, the idea of the first game is to teach the child about different flags, I made a booklet to go with this game, so the child simply has to choose the correct pieces and then put them in order, although this game is away from the original project brief I thought it would be a good idea to appeal to the creative side of the child. It is limited to just four types of flag as a prototype, but the flags that can be used should preferably have three colours, therefore it is hard to expand on the real model.

103. This image shows game 2 which has an aim to teach the child simple three letter words in English, as you can see from the image the bottom row reads ‘FLY’ the next one up reads ‘DOG’ the next one ‘CAT’ and the top row reads ‘APE’. Although the words are restricted within the instruction booklet which goes with the game, the child is able to become creative and perhaps find other words that can be made out of the letters provided. If a real model was created I would suggest perhaps having a certain amount of pieces and having at least one piece with one letter from the alphabet, with vowels having more than on piece.

104. The third and final game that the child can choose from is the one that ensures I have meet my project brief. As you can se from the image above it has a selection of words, the images of these words are displayed on the orange toy pieces, the English words on blue ones and the Italian words on green one, this helps the child notice clearly the difference between each of the languages. There is a booklet that goes with this game to ensure that once the child has played with the game, it can check it answers in reference to the booklet.

109. In my design brief I was asked to design and make a toy furniture out of cardboard. My product however does not meet this specification and the reason being my designing. Most of my designs are very curvy and therefore could not be made out of cardboard so I used Aeroply instead.This product will not look as appealing to its users as it might to other people. Because of the unusual design of the chair it won’t attract children as they prefer things that are simple but decorative. This product might not exactly be the type of toy young children are imploring to buy. The product overall is quite safe as it has no sharp edges, splinters or bits sticking out. Most of the design is curved so its not a hazard for any child; However, in one version of the final product the chair is designed to have a pointed top.From my graphs [shown earlier] I know that most people wanted a toy furniture that was between 20 – 30 cm tall. My final product is close to or probably a little bigger that this size so I’ve clearly I’ve met this specification pretty well.The design I chose to do for my final product didn’t let me follow most of my specifications – as they were either impossible or extremely hard to do. e.g. It was unattainable to make the curvy shape out of recycled cardboard look rounded and appealing. I think that the quality of my final product is quite good because it looks like something that could really be sold in a shop; however, I feel that it would have looked better if it was painted or something because it looks too plain. If I was to make this product again I would perhaps experiment with putting fabric on it or painting it so it doesn’t look so ‘empty’. I may also try adding some designs, holes or engrave things on it.One of the major changes I made as I was progressing with the coursework as a whole was of the material used. Primarily, I was only restricted to using cardboard as it was eco-friendly and part of the name of my project, but later on I discovered that the curvy and bendy designs I had in mind could not be made from recycled card at all, or wouldn’t look appealing enough and as a result I decided to make most of my models out of foam and card and the final out of aeroply.I am very pleased with how nice the rounded bits look on the chair - they look much better than I had expected, whoever has seen my final product find the curvy bits as interesting as the design, if not more. I am also very content with the quality of my final product. I really like the way its made and the final outcome is quite appealing. Although, if I had the chance I would probably do something about the colour of the chair, I’d paint it or cover it with fabric in order to make it look more appealing and attractive.Evaluation [continued...]

115. While I was designing and making the products I thought about many other ideas and possible modifications I could add to the current designs to make it better and more interesting. Unfortunately, I ran out of time so I’ve drawn sketches (below) to show the possible things I would change or make as models if not the final product... This design is very similar to the ones I did earlier; the only difference is that this design is more spikey.This design is probably a lot more difficult to make than the ones before as it has a very complicated shape. However, if I was to make this product I would make it for an older – more mature target market as the pointy bits can be a serious health hazard to children.Modifications

116. I find this design very interesting as it is pretty different to the ones I have been doing. The bottom of each chair – instead of going out makes a wavy shape under the chair, giving it a very interesting side look once both are stuck together. Also as an alternative to the sides bending to make the chair I’ve designed it in a way that the top half has to be made separately and later on attached to the two chair stuck together.Modifications
