1. The band members are dressed in bright coloured clothing and shoes which contrast against the
blacked out background of the city. This has been manipulated in the editing process to show how
vibrant and youthful their music is. The city background suggests that the band is urban, alternative
and Indie. The bright colours and joyful facial expressions suggest that the band are quite childish
and youthful, and that the target audience are aged around 15-25. Unconventional symmetry is
used, along with the Rule of Thirds. This fills up the image and centres the attention on the band
members. The band members are looking away from the camera lens, apart from the man closest to
the left of the image. He is using direct address, and looks the most composed out of the four. This
would suggest that he is the lead singer.
2. Within the Mise en Scene, the men are holding tennis rackets and are on a tennis court. Tennis is a
main British sport, which could suggest the men are British; however they are over purposely
exaggerating the stereotypical British behaviour which suggests that they are a foreign band, like
American. They are wearing pastel coloured, old fashioned tennis clothing, with the male placed in
the middle wearing boat shoes. These are the clothes that middle class men would wear so it could
suggest that they are within the classical music genre, however, they are all stood with one leg over
the tennis net with bad posture. This could suggest that they are mimicking middle class British
people and therefor are Alternative Indie. The brightness and contrast will have been adjusted which
makes the quality of the picture better which could suggest that the band are clean cut and fresh,
new music. Two band members are using direct address which could suggest that they are the two
lead members of the band. Conventional symmetry along with Rule Of Thirds is used to fill up the
image and make the band look quirky and confident, which could suggest that they are against the
mainstream bands and have created their own identity.
3. This image is of the rock band ‘The Fray’. The setting of the picture is at what looks like an
underground train station, which could represent their ‘urban’ music. The image is quite bleak and
the colour has been manipulated to be black and white. There is romanticism, and nostalgia in
shooting in black and white. The image has been stripped down to its bare bones, with no colour,
which can give an air of realism. It makes the image look old fashioned and gritty which could
suggest that the band want to come across as original in their style of music. The band are wearing
smart suits with trainers, which suggests that they are trying to rebel against their stereotype of a
rock band being dressed in punk clothing with excessive makeup, which again, suggests that they are
original in their music genre. Direct address is used with the man on the end, which could suggest
that he is the lead singer, or the main member of the band. None of them look happy, which
suggests that their music is quite ‘soft rock’. The rule of thirds has been used, along with
unconventional symmetry, which fills up the image and suggests that they are trying to be different
and original. This suggests that the Rock music genre is complex as each band has their own style.
Individuality is a common theme in ages 15-25, which hints that their target audience are young,
particularly aged between 15-20.
4. This image is of singer-song writer Robbie Williams. The setting of the picture is unknown which
could represent his inability to have a specific genre of music. The image is quite bleak and the
colour has been manipulated to be black and white. There is romanticism, and nostalgia in shooting
in black and white. The image has been stripped down to its bare bones, with no colour, which can
give an air of realism. It makes the image look gritty which could suggest that he wants to come
mysterious in his style of music, as he is known for releasing songs from many different genres of
music. He is wearing smart a coat, a white shirt and blacked out glasses whilst holding a notepad and
pen. This makes him appear to be a detective or a reporter, which could suggest that he ‘knows
everything’ there is to know about music. Direct address is used which tell us that Robbie is a solo
artist. He doesn’t look happy, but he is pulling a face which someone women find attractive, which
suggests that he is a sex icon for music. The rule of thirds has been used, along with unconventional
symmetry, which fills up the image to make Robbie Williams look superior which suggests that he is
confident that his music is good. This suggests that the Robbie’s music genre is complex as he has
more than one genre of music. Individuality is a common theme in ages 15-25, which hints that their
target audience are young, particularly aged between 15 and 20. However, the image itself looks
vintage, which could suggest he also has a target audience of people over 20.
5. This image is of British singer-song writer Tom Odell. The image is set in a rustic alleyway. This
suggests that he is home grown talent and has not fallen into the stereotypical media depiction of a
star. Odell is wearing a blue shirt and a teal bomber jacket which originates from the 1970’s. This
shows his fashion taste. The statement shows his music could be classed as ‘indie’. The brightness
and contrast will have been adjusted which makes the quality of the picture better which could
suggest that Tom Odell is clean cut and fresh, new music. Conventional symmetry and Rule of Thirds
are not used which suggests that Tom Odell is trying to break away from conventional music genres
and create his own original style. Individuality is common in teenagers. Tom Odell himself looks like
he is a teenager himself, which suggests that his target audience is the younger generation, aka
teenagers.
