The 18 meter bamboo bridge in Solo, Central Java, Indonesia connects the Pasar Gede market to the colonial Dutch Vastenburg fort. Architects from ASF-ID designed the bridge using large bamboo poles cut at regular intervals and secured with steel bolts to form the main arches. To prolong the lifespan of the bridge, the floor is made of reinforced concrete and the roof has eaves to protect the pest-treated bamboo. A goal of the architects was to exemplify the constructive possibilities of bamboo, which is known for its tensile strength and flexibility.
