BALANCED CANTILEVER METRO
BRIDGE.
CONTENTS
INTRODUCTION OBJECTIVES FUNCTIONS PROS AND CONS APPLICATIONS CONCLUSION
CANTILEVER BRIDGE
• A cantilever bridge is a bridge built
using cantilevers, structures that project
horizontally into space, supported on only one end.
For small footbridges, the cantilevers may be
simple beams; however, large cantilever bridges
designed to handle road or rail traffic
use trusses built from structural steel, or box
girders built from prestressed concrete.
• A cantilever bridge is a specific type of bridge. It is
called a cantilever bridge because it is built using
cantilevers.
• A cantilever is a structure that is only anchored at
one of its ends. Its other end projects horizontally
into space, and it is this end that helps support the
bridge.
TYPES OF CANTILEVER BRIDGE
• BALANCED CANTILEVER BRIDGES
• CONTINUOUS CANTILEVER BRIDGES
BALANCED CANTILEVER BRIDGE
• The Balanced Cantilever Method refers to a construction
method that does not install scaffolding systems under the
bridge and completes the superstructure of the bridge by
sequentially joining the segments to form a span by post-
tensioning and balancing them left and right from each
pier using special erection equipment.
• The balanced cantilever method can be largely classified as
Cast-in-Place Cantilever Method and Precast Cantilever
Method.
• Due to lack of supporting piers in the Cantilever Bridges, it
gives extra flexibility to the style and geometry of the
highway supported by this Bridge.
CONTINUOUS CANTILEVER BRIDGES
• The continuous cantilever bridge is a truss type of
bridge that extends across three or more supports
without hinges or joints.
• It is highly simplified but it will explain the basic
concepts, similar to a normal beam.
• Analysis of a cantilever span with a back span is
illustrated to expose the load distribution.
OBJECTIVES
To reduce the total weight of the long-span
cantilever bridges, lightweight concrete is also
sometimes used in the construction of the
Cantilever Bridges.
FUNCTIONS
Cantilever Bridge.- A structure at least one
portion of which acts as an anchorage for
sustaining another portion which extends
beyond the supporting pier. A simple cantilever
span is formed by two cantilever arms
extending from opposite sides of an obstacle to
be crossed, meeting at the center.
THE PROS OF CANTILEVER BRIDGES
In the construction of the Cantilever bridges, the falsework is not required.
Cantilever bridges can higher withstand the effects of Thermal Expansion.
Cantilever bridges are suitable for the longest span.
Due to lack of supporting piers in the Cantilever Bridges, it gives extra flexibility to the style and geometry of the highway
supported by this Bridge.
The cantilever bridges are suitable for deep Rocky valleys and flood-prone areas where falsework is not possible.
In the construction of cantilever bridges, support is required on only one side of its cantilever.
THE CONS OF CANTILEVER BRIDGES
Cantilever Bridges experience a high amount of tension during the construction,
which is known as a Negative moment.
Cantilever bridges to take care of its stability by balancing between compressive
as well as tensile forces acting on it.
Cantilever bridges are heavy, so it required larger and stronger support.
Cantilever bridges are not suitable for Earthquake-prone areas.
Construction of cantilever bridges is not suitable for excessive climate conditions.
Construction and the Maintenance of the Cantilever bridges are complex.
USES OF CANTILEVER BRIDGE
This type of bridge has been used for pedestrians, trains,
and motor vehicles. Cantilevers are especially useful for
spanning a waterway without dividing it with river piers.
But here this bridge is used for crossing the Metro viaduct
over railway tracks.
BALANCED CANTILEVER
METRO BRIDGE
• The Balanced Cantilever Bridge
near Anand Talkies has a length of
231.2 meter and has 3 spans.
• The cantilever Bridge is at a height
of 22 meter from ground.
• Original proposal for the railway
crossing was 87meter span with
Open Web Girder (OWG).
• Central Railway asked Maha
Metro to increase the span to 100
meter so that their future
expansion plans were not
affected.
• Due to the increased length, the alignment of
OWG came on the curved portion, which requires
several temporary staging supports and
temporary land OWG requires heavy cranes,
trained manpower and longer traffic and power
blocks of minimum 4 to 5 hour duration.
• Maha Metro then came out with a solution of
replacing the OWG with Balanced Cantilever
Bridge Work on the balanced cantilever was
started on May 1, 2019.
• It was completed on September 27, 2021.
• Covid-19 pandemic led to exodus of construction
workers in 2020 and 2021.
• However, Maha Metro continued its work under
adverse circumstances Railway blocks were
available for 3 hours at night due to heavy
traffic.
• Maha Metro completed necessary work within
this short duration.
• Insulation sheets and fire blankets were used at
the time of construction work to prevent mishaps
due to railway’s high tension (HT) lines.
• The construction of the cantilever including
movement of form travelers during railway
blocks was completely mishap free.
