History
of
Badminton
Badmintonwasfirst calledasPoona. It
was developedfromachildren’sgame
calledbattledoreandshuttlecock. The
object of thisgamewastoseehow
long agroupcouldvolleythe
shuttlecock by hitting it with the
battledore, or paddle.
Thiscooperative, non-competitive game
wasoriginally playedwithout anet.
It wasinthe1860s, whensome
British officersinIndiawhowere
stationedat 'Kirkee' near thecityof
'Poona' (nowknownasPunecity)
usedtoplayagamewhichwas
verysimilar tobadmintonandthe
gamewasknownasthe'Poona'
gameat that time.
ThesesoldiersplayedwithBattledores
(Paddles) whichwasusedtohit the
shuttlecock andhadalsoaddedanet in
betweentheplayers. Whenthese
British soldiersreturnedbackhomeat
Gloustershire Countyin the 1870s,they
continuedtoplaythis'Poona' badminton
game.
In1873, theDukeof Beaufort helda
lawnparty inhiscountry place, called
Badminton.Agameof Poonawas
playedonthat dayandit became
popular amongtheelitepeopleof
British society
. Thenewpartysport
became knownas"theBadminton
game" and startedtogrowpopular.
Theyear 1877, isof historic
significancefor badminton, as
the'BathBadmintonClub', the
first badmintonclubever, was
formedandalsothefirst official
set of rulesweredeveloped.
TheInternational BadmintonFederation(IBF) was
formedin1934with9foundingmembers.
