Bridging the Engagement Gap for Distance Students Through Telerobotics
Traditional telepresence classrooms are expensive to implement and often require technical and instructional support to successfully translate an instructor's pedagogy. There is often an engagement gap when comparing the level of participation and curiosity exhibited by the distant student and their resident peers. A second issue is that students enrolled in a fully supported telepresent class are often enrolled in other courses that don’t take place in rooms equipped for their needs. Our team is exploring a mix of technologies that will allow distance students to engage with their instructor, peers, and course material in a standard classroom using an inexpensive, portable telerobotics platform. We hope to close the engagement gap by placing these robots among the resident students and in the direct line-of-sight of the instructor thus reducing distraction for the resident students and allowing the instructor to react to non-verbal cues exhibited by the distance students.

Technology and social media platforms are driving an unprecedented reorganization of the learning environment in and beyond schools around the world. Technology provides us leadership challenges and at the same time offers opportunities for communication and learning through technology channels to support professional development. School librarians and teacher librarians are often working as the sole information practitioner in their school, and need to stay in touch with others beyond their own school to develop their personal professional capacity to lead within their school. The Australian Teacher Librarian Network aims to make a difference, and supports school library staff in Australia and around the world to build professional networks and personal learning connections, offering an open and free exchange of ideas, strategies and resources to build collegiality. This ongoing professional conversation through online and social media channels is an important way to connect, communicate and collaborate in building a vibrant future for school librarians.

The study examines the effect of improvisation of teacher-made instructional media on students’ performance in some selected primary science concepts. Thus, a pre-test and post-test, non-randomized experimental design was adopted for the study. Three thousand, three hundred and sixty-eight (3,368) primary six pupils from 48 public primary schools in Akwa Ibom State formed the population while two hundred and nineteen primary six pupils from two schools formed the sample for the study. The two intact classes were exposed to standard and improvised science equipment. A Primary Science Performance Test (PSPT) instrument was used to collect data before and after each lesson. A t-test statistical analysis revealed that there is no significant difference of the post-test performance of intact classes exposed to improvised science equipment and those standard equipment indicating that pupils benefited equally from the standardized and improvised equipment with t-calculated score of 1.34 below the t-critical 2.92. It is recommended that the government should organize workshop on the use of improvised materials to change the orientation of the teacher centred instructional approach to teaching primary science.The use of technology in the k 8 science
