This document is a request for proposals to develop surface treatments to eliminate carbon deposits forming on fuel injector tips. It provides background on the need to reduce particulate emissions from gasoline engines and details the opportunity. Proposals are sought for coatings or other treatments that can prevent carbon buildup during testing and meet automotive standards. The project may involve applying or testing coatings in Phase 1 and incorporating the technology into production methods in Phase 2. Responses will be evaluated based on technical merit, approach, proprietary position, economic potential, and respondent capabilities.
Design for reliability (DFR) is an industry-wide practice and a philosophy of considering reliability in an early stage of product design and development, to achieve a highly-reliable product while with sustainable cost. Physical of Failure (PoF) is recognized as a key approach of implementing DFR in a product design and development process. The author will present a case study to illustrate predicting and identifying product failure early in the design phase with the help of a quantitative PoF model based analysis tool.
Jim Kovanda of American Chemical Technologies, a solution provider at the upcoming marcus evans Power Plant Management Summit 2012, on increasing power plant operational efficiency and reliability.
Interview with: Jim Kovanda, Executive Vice President, American Chemical Technologies
Design of Experiment (DOE) has been widely applied on improving product performance. It is an important part of Design for Six Sigma (DFSS). However, due to its limitation on data requirement and model assumptions, it is not popularly used in life test. In this presentation, a method combining regular DOE technique with proper life data analysis method is presented. This method can be used to identify factors that affect product life and also can be used to optimize design variables to improve product reliability.

Driving pump reliability forward in refineries with advanced composite wear r...robertaronen
In 2003, a refinery began a program to apply advanced composite wear rings, line shaft bearings, and related components. By September 2006, the program had expanded to 61 pumps, at which point plant personnel quantified results. The reliability impact of the program was evaluated using pump repair history, vibration records, and mechanical seal emissions data.
Results indicate that the program has been successful. Failures within the subject population decreased by 45%, overall vibration levels fell by an average of 25%, and mechanical seal emissions failures (for pumps subject to testing) dropped by 70%. These results suggest that proper application of composite materials can lead to improved reliability, and should be one of the options considered by plants seeking to increase their pump life.
Application of HALT at design stage becomes more and more common in electronics industry. Many discussions and disputations of the HALT test interpretation are in full swing. With our HALT test experiences in notebook, desktop and server products, we intend to share and discuss the safety factor of exact product operating limits to its operation specifications in temperature and vibration and common failure modes stimulated thereby. A general perspective of the test setup techniques by product types and its influence is also provided. The distinctive roles of HALT on board level and system level from thermal flow field point of view are also shared in this paper.
Physics of Failure (also known as Reliability Physics) is a science-based approach for achieving Reliability by Design. The approach is based on research to identify and understand the processes that initiate and propagate mechanisms that ultimately results in failure. This knowledge when used in Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) durability simulations and reliability assessment can evaluate if a new design, under actual operating is susceptible to the root causes of failure such as fatigue, fracture, wear, and corrosion during the intended service life of the product.
The objective is to identify and eliminate potential failure mechanisms in order to prevent operational failures through stress-strength analysis to produce a robust design and aid in the selection of capable manufacturing practices. This is accomplished by modeling the material strength and architecture of the components and technologies a product is based upon to evaluating their ability to endure the life-cycle usage and environmental stress conditions the product is expected to encounter over its service life in the field or during durability or reliability qualification tests.
The ability to identify and quantify the specific hazard risks timeline of specifics failure risks in a new product while it is still on the drawing board (or CAD screen) enables a product team to design reliability into a product by revising the design to eliminate or mitigate failure risks. This capability results in a form of Virtual Validation and Virtual Reliability Growth during the a product’s design phase that can be implemented faster and at lower costs than the traditional Design-Build-Test-Fixed approach to Reliability Growth during a product’s development and test phase.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software FuzzingAftab Hussain
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Observability Concepts EVERY Developer Should Know -- DeveloperWeek Europe.pdfPaige Cruz
Monitoring and observability aren’t traditionally found in software curriculums and many of us cobble this knowledge together from whatever vendor or ecosystem we were first introduced to and whatever is a part of your current company’s observability stack.
While the dev and ops silo continues to crumble….many organizations still relegate monitoring & observability as the purview of ops, infra and SRE teams. This is a mistake - achieving a highly observable system requires collaboration up and down the stack.
I, a former op, would like to extend an invitation to all application developers to join the observability party will share these foundational concepts to build on:
