MIT Master of Engineering in Manufacturing
Program
Dr. Anthony is Co-Director of MIT’s Medical Electronic
Device Realization Center, Director of MIT’s Master of
Engineering in Manufacturing Program, and Deputy Director for the MIT
Skoltech Initiative. With over 20 years experience in product realization –
Dr. Anthony won an Emmy (from the Academy of Television Arts and
Sciences) in broadcast technical innovation. Dr. Anthony designs instruments
and techniques to monitor and control physical systems. His work involves
systems analysis and design, calling upon mechanical, electrical and optical
engineering, along with computer science and optimization, to create
solutions.
The focus of Dr. Anthony’s research is in computational
instrumentation. His research includes the development of instrumentation
and measurement solutions for manufacturing systems and medical
diagnostics and imaging systems. His research and product development
interests cross the boundaries of computer vision, acoustic and ultrasonic
imaging, large-­‐‑scale computation and simulation, optimization, metrology,
autonomous systems, and robotics.
In addition to his academic work, he has extensive experience in market
driven technology innovation, product realization, and business
entrepreneurship and commercialization at the intersection between
information technology and advanced manufacturing. He has extensive
experience in market driven technology innovation as well as business
entrepreneurship.
George Arnold, CEO, Tercio Solutions
(MIT STEX Member)
George Arnold, Eng.Sc.D., has extensive experience in new
product introduction, systems engineering, manufacturing
automation and process engineering, intellectual property,
and new ventures as an executive at AT&T, Bell Labs,
Alcatel-Lucent, and the National Institute of Standards and
Technology. His experience includes development of information systems for
manufacturing automation, a new venture-providing airline scheduling
optimization, and R&D for cyber-physical systems including advanced
manufacturing. He is an IEEE Fellow.
Scott Hibbard, VP, Factory Automation, Bosch
Scott Hibbard is Vice President of Technology, Factory
Automation Bosch Rexroth Corporation Hoffman Estates,
Illinois. He has been associated with the industrial motion
control industry for the past 37 years, 34 of those with
Bosch Rexroth, including the former Indramat Division of
the Rexroth Corporation.
Scott played a key role in the pioneering introduction of the first
practical industrial brushless AC servo drives and multi-processing CNCs
used in high production manufacturing, as well as moving printing and
packaging automation technology from mechanical systems to precision
electronic motion control. His current responsibilities include management of
Rexroth’s facility in Hoffman Estates, as well as leading product management
and development for Bosch Rexroth’s factory automation markets. Scott is
currently active in the development of the Industrial Internet (Industry 4.0)
focusing on standards enabling meaningful interchange of information across
the manufacturing environment.
He serves on the board of directors for Sercos North America, the trade
association that stewards the ongoing development and adoption of Sercos,
the international real time interface standard. Scott is also chairman of the
Association for Manufacturing Technology’s Technical Issues Committee,
and chairs the MTConnect Technical Advisory Group.
Scott graduated from DeVry Technical Institute in 1977. He is the
author of numerous technical articles and papers on AC servo, digital drive
control, and open control system technologies, as well as energy efficiency in
factory automation.
Karl F. Koster, Executive Director, MIT Office of
Corporate Relations/Industrial Liaison Program
Karl F. Koster is the executive director of the MIT Office
of Corporate Relations. The Office of Corporate Relations
at MIT includes the Industrial Liaison Program, which
celebrated 60 years of service to the Institute and its
corporate partners in 2008.
In that capacity, he and his staff work with the senior administrative and
faculty leadership of MIT in developing and implementing strategies for
enhancing corporate involvement with the Institute. Mr. Koster has been
involved with faculty leaders in identifying and designing a number of major
international programs for MIT. Many of these programs focus on
institutional development and are characterized by the establishment of strong,
international, programmatic linkages between universities, industry, and
governments.
Mr. Koster graduated from Brown University with a B.A. in geology
and economics in 1974, and received an M.S. from the MIT Sloan School of
Management in 1980. At the Sloan School he concentrated in international
business management and the management of technological innovation. Prior
to returning to MIT, Mr. Koster worked as a management consultant for seven
years in Europe, Latin America, and the United States on projects for private
and public sector organizations.
Christophe Mandy, Manufacturing Lead,
Formlabs (MIT STEX Member)
Christophe Mandy heads the manufacturing team at
Formlabs, a 3D printing startup based in Boston. Prior to
Formlabs, Christophe has conducted research in a variety
of fields spanning control systems, system design and
optimization, astrophysics and mechanics. As part of the
MIT SPHERES experiment, he implemented his research on formation flying
satellites in space and prior to that he was modelling mass transfers in binary
stellar systems.
He spent two years in management consulting for consumer goods and
financial services companies, developing strategy IP. He also designed
recommendation engines and matching algorithms for the online dating
platform Coffee Meets Bagel.
Christophe holds masters degrees in mathematics and astrophysics from
the University of Brussels, in aeronautics  astronautics from MIT and an
M.B.A. from Harvard Business School.

!Elisabeth Reynolds, Executive Director at the
MIT Industrial Performance Center (IPC)
Elisabeth Reynolds is the Executive Director of MIT’s
Industrial Performance Center (IPC), an interdisciplinary
research center dedicated to the study of innovation,
productivity and competitiveness.
Dr. Reynolds works on topics related to the geography of innovation,
regional economic growth, and industrial innovation and competitiveness. Her
current research focuses on innovation and advanced manufacturing, in
particular the globalization of the biomanufacturing industry, as well as how
innovative startups grow to scale.
She is a member of the Massachusetts Advanced Manufacturing
Collaborative and an advisor to the Massachusetts Biomanufacturing
Roundtable. Before coming to MIT, Dr. Reynolds was the Director of the City
Advisory Practice at the Initiative for a Competitive Inner City (ICIC), a non-
profit founded by Professor Michael Porter focused on job and business
growth in urban areas. Her background also includes working as a policy
analyst at the Institute for Research in Public Policy, a Canadian think tank,
and as a financial analyst with Goldman Sachs.
She has an A.B. from Harvard College in Government and was the
Harvard Fiske Scholar at Trinity College, Cambridge. She holds a M.Sc. from
the University of Montreal in Economics and a Ph.D. from MIT in urban and
regional studies.
Daniel Theobald, CTO, Vecna Technologies
(MIT STEX Member)
Daniel A. Theobald serves as Chief Technology Officer
and President of Vecna Technologies, Inc.
Mr. Theobald is the inventor of the BEAR™, and is well
versed in the engineering sciences with extensive
experience in software architecture, artificial intelligence (AI),
electromechanical engineering and mobile robotics. He is the recipient of the
Henry Ford II Scholar Award and the Hertz Foundation Award, as well as a
fellowship from the National Science Foundation. He did graduate work at the
MIT AI Laboratory including developing web-based control algorithms for a
robotic Mars explorer, a progenitor of Spirit and Opportunity. He holds B.S.
and M.S. degrees in mechanical engineering from MIT.
Trond Undheim, Ph.D., Lead, Startup
Initiative, MIT Industrial Liaison Program
Trond heads up the Startup Initiative at MIT’s
Industrial Liaison Program (ILP), facilitating
productive relationships between industry and MIT’s
startup ecosystem. He is a senior lecturer at the MIT Sloan School of
Management.
Trond is a serial entrepreneur with Scandinavian roots and is currently
the founder of Yegii, Inc., the insight network, and managing director of
Tautec Consulting.
Trond is a leading expert on technology development across industries
such as IT, Energy, and Healthcare. His knowledge spans entrepreneurship,
strategy frameworks, policymaking, action learning, virtual teamwork,
knowledge management, standardization, and e-government. He wrote the
book Leadership From Below (2008). Trond speaks six languages and is a
frequent public speaker on business, technology, and wine. Trond was a
strategy/business development executive at Oracle Corp. (2008-12) and a
policymaker in the EU (2004-08) where he built the ePractice.eu web platform
with 120,000 members. He has worked with multinational companies, with
mid-caps and startups in Brazil, China, Colombia, France, Indonesia, Norway,
the UK, and the U.S.
Trond holds an M.A. in sociology and a Ph.D. in sociological
technology and policy studies from the Norwegian University of Science and
Technology.
Krystyn J. Van Vliet, Associate Professor of
Materials Science and Engineering, MIT
Department of Materials Science and
Engineering
Van Vliet earned her Sc.B. in materials science 
engineering from Brown University (1998) and her Ph.D.
in materials science  engineering from MIT (2002). At MIT, Van Vliet was
a National Defense Science  Engineering Graduate Fellow, was President of
the Graduate Materials Council, and won the MRS Gold Medal for her thesis
research. Her MIT thesis work with Prof. Subra Suresh established the
experimental and computational basis for predicting homogeneous nucleation
of dislocations (plasticity carrying defects) in crystalline metals. She then
conducted postdoctoral research with Dr. Marsha Moses at Boston Children’s
Hospital, where she developed new experimental approaches to measure the
effects of mechanical strain on cells that comprise blood vessels.
Van Vliet joined the faculty of MIT’s Department of Materials Science
 Engineering in 2004, and leads the Laboratory for Material
Chemomechanics. She also joined MIT’s Department of Biological
Engineering in 2011.
She currently leads the Singapore-MIT Alliance in Research 
Technology (SMART) BioSystems  Micromechanics IRG, which includes
approximately 175 researchers in Singapore and MIT, including 8 other MIT
faculty from several engineering departments and 25 Singapore-based faculty
collaborators. This team invents and develops new technology platforms for
diagnostics and treatment of cell and tissue disease. Within five years, this
team of engineers, biologists, and clinicians has contributed several key
breakthroughs and inventions to cell imaging, drug screening, and optical
imaging; this includes one start-up company and several devices now involved
in international clinical trials.
Moderator
Mitch Tyson, Principal, Tyson Associates
Mitch is an experienced high tech executive and
entrepreneur, serves on a number of corporate, non-profit,
and governmental boards, advises start-ups and investors,
and is deeply involved in the clean energy and
manufacturing ecosystems. Mitch is Co-chair of the
Massachusetts Advanced Manufacturing Collaborative and has been the CEO
of several manufacturing companies.
He is Chair and Co-founder of the New England Clean Energy Council
and is an Adjunct Professor at the Brandeis International Business School.
Mitch is a partner in the Clean Energy Venture Group and serves on the
corporate boards of Photronics (PLAB), Big Belly Solar, 7AC and
Automation Engineering, Inc. Mitch is also on the boards of the Acadia
Center (formerly Environment Northeast), the New England Water Innovation
Network, Greentown Labs, and the Venture Café Foundation.
Tyson was previously CEO of PRI Automation, a publically traded
automation and robotics company that provided hardware, software, and
services to the semiconductor manufacturing industry. PRI grew from $4M to
over $300M during his tenure. He has a B.S. in Physics, an M.S. in nuclear
engineering and an M.S. in political science, all from MIT, where he
concentrated his studies in energy technology and policy.

Noramay Cadena, Co-founder and Managing
Director, Make in LA
Noramay Cadena is the co-founder and Managing Director of
Make in LA, the first hardware focused accelerator in
Los Angeles.
In 2013, Cadena co-founded the Latinas in STEM Foundation
to inspire and empower Latinas to pursue and thrive in STEM fields.
Previously, Cadena spent over 10 years working across multiple large
complex hardware products at The Boeing Company - from airplanes to satellites
to space transport.
She is also a member of The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers
(SHPE), the National Society of Hispanic MBAs (NSHMBA) and the Society of
Women Engineers (SWE). Noramay holds an M.B.A., a Master’s in engineering
systems and a Bachelor’s in mechanical engineering from MIT.
Eugene Chang, Founder, Integrated Strategies 
Tactics LLC
Eugene Chang is the founder of Integrated Strategies 
Tactics, IST, a boutique consulting firm focused on
product management, product marketing, and sales channel
development. The potential of great products are not
realized if the products are difficult to market or sell. IST has active products in
cybersecurity, wireless communications, and wireless ranging. IST is in the
process of recruiting embedded software developers to support new IoT projects.
Mr. Chang has over 30 years of experience in the engineering and
marketing of high tech products. His career has paralleled the development of the
Internet, beginning with communications over the analog telephone networks, to
the transformation of the Arpanet into the Internet, and the explosion of wireless
communications. He has contributed to the creation of standards at the EIA, ITU,
IEEE, the Wi-Fi Alliance, and the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF).
Mr. Chang was the founder and CEO of a start up company from 1989-
1995. He is the co-inventor of six patents. He earned a B.S. and M.S. in
Computer Science from MIT.
Gonzalo Garcia, Chief Business, Marketing and
Development Officer, Air Liquide aBT
Gonzalo Garcia is the Chief Business, Marketing and
Development Officer at Air Liquide aBT. Since the late
1980’s, his professional life has revolved around
entrepreneurship and technology; primarily RFID, Mobile Computing and
Analytics, with a focus on its application in process automation, supply chain and
asset management.
At Air Liquide - advanced Business  Technology, IoT is built into their
vision People + Intelligence + Objects, which acts as an essential pillar to
develop their next Business and Operations.”
He was the CEO of Athelia Solutions, the Co-founder and CEO of Athelia
Solutions International and the Founder and CEO of MC Systems.
Gonzalo obtained his Business Administration (B.A.), BBA from UDIMA,
and a Master’s in Computer Information Systems.
Lee Scheffler, Founder and Principal
Technologist, Cognitivity
Lee Scheffler is the Founder and Principal Technologist
of Cognitivity, developing technology for rapid building
of integrative cognitive systems.
He worked on Multics at MIT Project MAC and
holds several patents. Also he has developed software security, networking,
office automation, and remote database access systems.
Lee is an inventor and chief architect of DataStage parallel dataflow data
integration system now at the core of IBM’s Information Server. As an IBM
Distinguished Engineer and Master Inventor he continued innovation in the
data integration technology space.
Lee Scheffler attended MIT, ’71, ’74, and earned his S.B., S.M. and E.E.
degrees in computer science.
William T. Townsend, Ph.D., CEO  Founder,
Barrett Technology
Dr. Townsend is the President  CEO of Barrett
Technology, the Massachusetts-based company he founded
in 1988 to advance the state of human-machine interaction.
He is an innovator with over a dozen issued patents in the
U.S., Europe, and Japan. Products he helped design can be found today in
eighteen countries across 6 continents.
In the area of human-machine devices, Dr. Townsend won the
prestigious Robotic Industries Association Joseph Engelberger Award in
Technology for his design of the first haptics-capable robot. This device was
also chosen as the world’s most advanced robot in the Millennium Edition of
the Guinness Book of Records. Mako Surgical, a division of Stryker Medical,
licensed gearless drives invented by Townsend and his collaborators that
constitute the core of their flagship RIO partial-implant knee-surgery robot
that interacts via gentle haptic forces with the surgeon. He earned his Ph.D.
and M.S. degrees in engineering at MIT and his B.S. at Northeastern
University. Today, Bill continues to drive future technology and product
innovation at Barrett including the development of the newest Puck ultra
miniature brushless motor controller and Proficio, an upper-limb rehabilitation
device aimed initially at the support of research into the mechanisms of
neurological disorders.
Walid Negm, Global Lead, Industrial Internet of
Things, Accenture
Walid Negm is a global RD director with Accenture
Technology Labs and leads Accenture’s Industrial
Internet Strategic Innovation Initiative. Walid provides
over-sight to Accenture’s risk management policies and
best practices for Cloud Computing. Previously, Walid
led the product development of the first ‘XML’ Firewall technology, which
was commercially pioneered within the U.S. Treasury Department. Mr. Negm
held the position of Director of Internet Technologies at Oracle Corporation,
where he worked with Fortune 500 corporations in the area of complex supply
chain management.
He earned his M.B.A. in International Finance/Global Studies from
Georgetown University, and his B.S. in Computer Engineering and Master’s
in Computer Engineering from Boston University.

With over 20 years experience in product realization – Dr. Anthony won an Emmy (from the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences) in broadcast technical innovation. Dr. Anthony designs instruments and techniques to monitor and control physical systems. His work involves systems analysis and design, calling upon mechanical, electrical and optical engineering, along with computer science and optimization, to create solutions. The focus of Dr. Anthony’s research is in computational instrumentation. His research includes the development of instrumentation and measurement solutions for manufacturing systems and medical diagnostics and imaging systems. His research and product development interests cross the boundaries of computer vision, acoustic and ultrasonic imaging, large-­‐‑scale computation and simulation, optimization, metrology, autonomous systems, and robotics. George Arnold, CEO, Tercio Solutions (MIT STEX Member) George Arnold, Eng.Sc.D., has extensive experience in new product introduction, systems engineering, manufacturing automation and process engineering, intellectual property, and new ventures as an executive at AT&T, Bell Labs, Alcatel-Lucent, and the National Institute of Standards and Technology. His experience includes development of information systems for manufacturing automation, a new venture-providing airline scheduling optimization, and R&D for cyber-physical systems including advanced manufacturing. He is an IEEE Fellow. Scott Hibbard, VP, Factory Automation, Bosch Scott Hibbard is Vice President of Technology, Factory Automation Bosch Rexroth Corporation Hoffman Estates, Illinois. He has been associated with the industrial motion control industry for the past 37 years, 34 of those with Bosch Rexroth, including the former Indramat Division of the Rexroth Corporation. Scott played a key role in the pioneering introduction of the first practical industrial brushless AC servo drives and multi-processing CNCs used in high production manufacturing, as well as moving printing and packaging automation technology from mechanical systems to precision electronic motion control. His current responsibilities include management of Rexroth’s facility in Hoffman Estates, as well as leading product management and development for Bosch Rexroth’s factory automation markets. Scott is currently active in the development of the Industrial Internet (Industry 4.0) focusing on standards enabling meaningful interchange of information across the manufacturing environment. He serves on the board of directors for Sercos North America, the trade association that stewards the ongoing development and adoption of Sercos, the international real time interface standard. Scott is also chairman of the Association for Manufacturing Technology’s Technical Issues Committee, and chairs the MTConnect Technical Advisory Group. Scott graduated from DeVry Technical Institute in 1977. He is the author of numerous technical articles and papers on AC servo, digital drive control, and open control system technologies, as well as energy efficiency in factory automation. Karl F. Koster, Executive Director, MIT Office of Corporate Relations/Industrial Liaison Program Karl F. Koster is the executive director of the MIT Office of Corporate Relations. The Office of Corporate Relations at MIT includes the Industrial Liaison Program, which celebrated 60 years of service to the Institute and its corporate partners in 2008. In that capacity, he and his staff work with the senior administrative and faculty leadership of MIT in developing and implementing strategies for enhancing corporate involvement with the Institute. Mr. Koster has been involved with faculty leaders in identifying and designing a number of major international programs for MIT. Many of these programs focus on institutional development and are characterized by the establishment of strong, international, programmatic linkages between universities, industry, and governments. Mr. Koster graduated from Brown University with a B.A. in geology and economics in 1974, and received an M.S. from the MIT Sloan School of Management in 1980. Prior to returning to MIT, Mr. Koster worked as a management consultant for seven years in Europe, Latin America, and the United States on projects for private and public sector organizations. Christophe Mandy, Manufacturing Lead, Formlabs (MIT STEX Member) Christophe Mandy heads the manufacturing team at Formlabs, a 3D printing startup based in Boston. Prior to Formlabs, Christophe has conducted research in a variety of fields spanning control systems, system design and optimization, astrophysics and mechanics. As part of the MIT SPHERES experiment, he implemented his research on formation flying satellites in space and prior to that he was modelling mass transfers in binary stellar systems. He spent two years in management consulting for consumer goods and financial services companies, developing strategy IP. He also designed recommendation engines and matching algorithms for the online dating platform Coffee Meets Bagel. Christophe holds masters degrees in mathematics and astrophysics from the University of Brussels, in aeronautics astronautics from MIT and an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School.

Krystyn J. Van Vliet, Associate Professor of Materials Science and Engineering, MIT Department of Materials Science and Engineering Van Vliet earned her Sc.B. in materials science engineering from Brown University (1998) and her Ph.D. in materials science engineering from MIT (2002). At MIT, Van Vliet was a National Defense Science Engineering Graduate Fellow, was President of the Graduate Materials Council, and won the MRS Gold Medal for her thesis research. Her MIT thesis work with Prof. Subra Suresh established the experimental and computational basis for predicting homogeneous nucleation of dislocations (plasticity carrying defects) in crystalline metals. She then conducted postdoctoral research with Dr. Marsha Moses at Boston Children’s Hospital, where she developed new experimental approaches to measure the effects of mechanical strain on cells that comprise blood vessels.
