John, founder of Ample, the battery swap startup, is a former president of the consumer health division
at Aptus Health, responsible for the consumer engagement, media solutions, and health systems busi-
nesses. Prior to that, he was the president and CEO of MedHelp, the world’s largest health community,
which was acquired by Aptus Health (formerly Physicians Interactive) in June 2014. A serial entrepre-
neur, John has founded and held senior management positions in several successful startup compa-
nies, including Flash Communications and DESoFT. John received a BS and MS in Computer Science
and Electrical Engineering from MIT and an MBA from College des Ingenieurs in France.
Dana Guernsey, Director of Corporate Development, Ambri
Dana is the Director of Corporate Development at Ambri, an early-stage battery manufacturer based in
Cambridge, MA that is commercializing the Liquid Metal Battery technology invented at MIT. Dana’s
primary focus at Ambri is on market development and market analytics, to which she brings deep elec-
tricity market and energy industry expertise. Previously, Dana was the Director of Energy Markets at En-
erNOC, a leading provider of demand response and energy intelligence software. Dana holds a Master
of Engineering Management, Bachelor of Engineering, and Bachelor of Arts from Dartmouth College.
David Eaglesham, CEO & Co-founder, Pellion Technologies
David is CEO of Pellion Technologies, the MIT startup dedicated to rapid commercialization of magne-
sium ion batteries. Formerly, he was the CTO of First Solar and the Director of Advanced Technologies
at Applied Materials. He also previously worked as Chief Technologist at Lawrence Livermore and as
Director of Electronic Device Research at Bell Labs. Prior to joining First Solar, he held senior leader-
ship positions at Bell Labs, Applied Materials, and LLNL. Mr. Eaglesham has a PhD in Physics from the
University of Bristol.
John Cooley, PhD, President, COO, & Co-founder, FastCap
John co-founded FastCAP Systems in 2009, the MIT startup working on energy storage for extreme
conditions. In the past, he has worked in the defense and medical devices industries and has consulted
in IP litigation. Dr. Cooley holds five technical degrees from MIT including the PhD (MIT’11) from the
Electrical Engineering Department. At MIT, he won both the David Adler Memorial Thesis Prize and the
Morris Joseph Levin Award for his thesis work, and was a Martin Family Fellow in 2009. He serves on
the board of directors of the MIT Crew Alumni Association.
Sanjay Gupta, VP Product Management, Witricity
Sanjay is a VP Platforms & Product at Witricity, the MIT startup working on wireless storage. He is an
entrepreneurial technology executive with expertise in conceptualizing, building and delivering innova-
tive solutions and differentiated products to businesses. Formerly, he worked at Motorola. Sanjay has a
PhD from U Penn in Electrical Engineering.

Joe is the Senior Director of Products at 24M.
Matt Lazarewicz, CEO & Co-founder, Helix Power
Matt, a co-founder of Helix Power, the burst power MIT-startup, is a visionary engineer and expert in
rotary systems. Prior to founding Helix, he was CTO at Beacon Power where he led the introduction of
world’s largest commercial flywheel energy storage facility. At GE Aircraft he was the Mechanical Design
Manager for the F404 and F414 engines in the F-18 and F117 fighters. He served for eight years on the
Board of Directors of the Energy Storage Association. Matt earned a BSME, an MSME and an MS Man-
agement from MIT.
Mackenzie King, VP of Product Development, SolidEnergy Systems
Mackenzie King is the VP of Product Development at SolidEnergy Systems. He is a strategic leader with
a broad background in business and product development in advanced materials and technology solu-
tions. King has demonstrated success in transforming strategic initiatives into commercial success with
a strong people development and coaching background for building high performing teams, resource
optimization, and customer facing new product introduction.
Francisco Morocz, Co-founder, Helia Tech
Francisco, a co-founder of Helia Tech, the microgrid startup, is a multilingual engineer with research
experience, programming skills, background in product design, and professional experience in IT con-
sulting and implementation of business process solutions. He was a senior analyst at Accenture and a
mechanical engineer at Lexmark. Francisco has a Master of Mechanical engineering from MIT (MIT’13).
Jeff Zhang, President, CEO, & Co-founder, Novarials
Jeff is a co-founder of Novarials, the MIT startup, with MIT PhD graduate Qi Zhao. Novarials is working

fabrication, new device design concepts and performance engineering. Her PhD in material science is

One of the top battery researchers and innovators in the world, Prof. Chiang’s research focuses on the
design, synthesis, and characterization of advanced inorganic materials and related devices, including
new cathode and anode materials for lithium ion batteries and electrochemical device design. He has
published over 200 scientific articles, one textbook, and holds more than 60 patents and a similar num-
ber of pending patent applications. Yet-Ming holds SB and ScD degrees from MIT.

founder of Yegii, Inc., the insight network for man/machine intelligence on industry disruption. Former-

(2008), was a Research Associate at UC Berkeley, and has a PhD in technology studies from the Norwe-

Marcus, a 2X tech entrepreneur is a Fortune 100 Innovator, business and product strategist specialized
in mobile and software, mentoring and corporate development. He recently joined the STEX leadership
team. A former elite rower, and with extensive consulting and mentoring experience including from
the MIT Venture Mentoring Service (VMS), as well as software management, he previously worked at
as a corporate strategist at Nokia. Marcus has an MBA from Wharton and a BA from the University of
Pennsylvania.

Karl is the Executive Director of the MIT Office of Corporate Relations, which includes the MIT Startup
Exchange Program (STEX), established in 2015, now with 1200 MIT-connected startups, and the MIT
Industrial Liaison Program (ILP), established in 1948, now with 230 corporate member companies
across industry. Karl also serves as the Chairman of the University-Industry Demonstration Partnership
(UIDP). Prior to returning to MIT, Mr. Koster worked as a management consultant in Europe, Latin
America, and the United States on projects for private and public sector organizations. Mr. Koster grad-
uated from Brown University with a BA in geology and economics in 1974, and received a MS from the
MIT Sloan School of Management in 1980.

ABOUT THE STEX PROGRAM AND STEX25
MIT STARTUP EXCHANGE (STEX)
MIT Startup Exchange (STEX), a program of the MIT Office of Corporate Relations, facilitates introduc-
tions between MIT’s Industrial Liaison Program (ILP) corporations and MIT-connected startups. In
2016, STEX made over 300 initial introductions between ILP Members and startups. These introduc-
tions led to partnerships, licensed technology, customer agreements and other commercial arrange-
ments. 1,200+ startups are part of STEX from across all research centers and departments at MIT.
Collectively, STEX startups are shaping the future across existing and emerging industries. MIT Startup

STEX25
STEX25 is a startup accelerator focused on accelerating partnerships between STEX startups and
ILP member corporations. 25 of the most promising STEX startups are selected to participate in the

workshops and ILP conferences, and matchmaking services with ILP members. STEX25 is organized
and run by MIT Startup Exchange.

    ABOUT THE STEXPROGRAM AND STEX25 MIT STARTUP EXCHANGE (STEX) MIT Startup Exchange (STEX), a program of the MIT Office of Corporate Relations, facilitates introduc- tions between MIT’s Industrial Liaison Program (ILP) corporations and MIT-connected startups. In 2016, STEX made over 300 initial introductions between ILP Members and startups. These introduc- tions led to partnerships, licensed technology, customer agreements and other commercial arrange- ments. 1,200+ startups are part of STEX from across all research centers and departments at MIT. Collectively, STEX startups are shaping the future across existing and emerging industries. MIT Startup Exchange is directed by Trond Undheim, PhD (tundheim@mit.edu), and Marcus Dahllöf (marcusd@ mit.edu). STEX25 STEX25 is a startup accelerator focused on accelerating partnerships between STEX startups and ILP member corporations. 25 of the most promising STEX startups are selected to participate in the 12-month accelerator. STEX25 startups receive additional promotion, prominent exposure at STEX workshops and ILP conferences, and matchmaking services with ILP members. STEX25 is organized and run by MIT Startup Exchange.
