Director: Tim
Burton
Corpse bride

Color and Framing:
Tim Burton uses a lot of dark dull colors such as grey and black in this animated film because they
portray the image that he wants the audience to see , he also has the warner brother logo
contrasted into a dark theme. The Framing has not got big establishing shots the framing shows a
really simple and dull mise en scene which is interesting as Tim Burton uses very few settings
similar to his Disney film Frankenweenie.
Shot Types, Angles and Movement:
In the Corpse Bride we have some POV (Point Of View) shots which mostly are low angles of the
setting this is almost like we are seeing it from Burtons view in his vision. We are shown low angles
and high angles when we are following the butterfly. The movement of the shots in Corpse Bride is
really slow and flows whilst we are following the butterfly.
Pace of titles and Editing:
The titles come in the beginning as we have a panning shot going to antagonist drawing a butterfly .
In this animated film the editing has been revolved around shots of us following the butterfly and
there is a continuous flow. Burton makes the shots/scenes go perfectly through the opening.
How characters/place/time are introduced:
The characters are portrayed in the Victorian times as there costumes defines the time period.
Burton’s signature in animation films is to have very few settings which he used in this film and this
introduction of the setting and location helped the audience visualize what he wanted it to be and
mean.
How do they utilize music and sound?
We have non-diegetic orchestral music playing while our antagonist is drawing a butterfly, when he
releases the butterfly we then have a crescendo which leads us following the butterfly we then are
taken into the streets and we then have diegetic sounds of what people are doing while the music is
lowered in the background and then comes back up when we are taken somewhere else.
Frankenweenie
Color and Framing:
Burton has made this animation film in black and white this is similar to corpse bride because he
has used dull grey and black colors we have this transition from the logo of the Walt Disney into
black and white with thunder over it. the framing of this film is from Burtons view again of what
everyone else is doing and him watching over. The framing then changes into us watching the T.V
with the family in the film.
Shot Types Angles and Movement:
In the film opening we are only shown shots of the T.V screen and then the Shots of the family’s
we have low angle shots of the family watching the T.V and then the T.V is showing slow
movements of panning shots following what the characters are looking at this is interesting
because Burton wants us to feel like we are actually watching T.V with the family this makes us
feel more involved.
Pace of titles and Editing:
In the opening we have no titles we only have the logo of Walt Disney the logo is transformed into
black and white and thunder over it this is a classic signature of burton’s as he changed the warner
brother logo into black and grey in the Corpse Bride opening. The editing is similar to the Corpse
bride as it has a continuous flow in the beginning with shots going back and forth from the T.V to
the characters.
How characters/place/time are introduced:
When the character is introduced he is using a old fashioned screen projector to watch a filming
and this shows us the time period. also the whole entire film is in black and white this also shows
the times period as being old. We also see the animated character with high waited trousers with
the top tucked in which shows their fashion from a different older time period.
How do they utilize music and sound?
In the opening all the sound is all diegetic. Then we have music hic is lowered when one of the
characters speak and then put back up.
Vincent
Color and Framing:
Again Tim burton has used Black and grey in his animated film, although the contrast is low the
quality is still clear. The framing is going through different locations and the still framing shots of
different settings and we are watching again over the characters like we are Burtons eyes.
Shot Types, Angles and Movement:
The main shot types that we have are still shots of the setting and the setting changes
continuously in the beginning and then. We do not have many angle shots in the beginning we just
have a POV (point of view) which we are seeing through. The only movement we have in the
opening is when we follow the cat into the room we also have a movement if a panning shot into
the next setting.
Pace of titles and Editing:
In the beginning we have a black bold background which we then have the titles coming up this is
interesting because they only have two titles in a small print that comes up in the beginning. The
Editing of the opening has some jumped changes from one setting to another but has a flow when
panning.
How characters/place/time are introduced:
We are first introduced to our character when we have the cat jumping through the window we are
introduced to other characters but there faces are not shown only from the neck and down. We
know that the location is indoors in the house and the setting changes continuously in the
beginning but remains indoors. The film is also in black and grey and this represents it as being
old. but the time also changes with the setting fro Vincent repeatedly going young and old.
How do they utilize music and sound?
The sound that is used is narration but sounds like a old fashioned radio speaking. The sounds
that we have are diegetic. In the opening we hear the flute and don't know where it is coming from
which makes it non-diegetic and then when the cat jumps through the window we see Vincent
playing it which makes it diegetic.
If the genres of the films are different - is the
signature style of the director still recognizable?

The signature of Tim Burton is still recognisable in these three film because they are all animated and
are based around horror/comedy .

Corpse bride:

Frankenweenie

Vincent:

Each character is animated which is a key feature of Tim Burton also these are and they all have key
combination colour of black, grey and white. They also have the genre theme of Horror and Comedy.
Another Tim burton trend to change the Disney logo’s into something different in his animated films:
For each film sum up what you actually know
about the narrative of the film from the
opening two minutes.

Corpse Bride:
From the opening of the film we don’t see much of the narrative, in the opening we are
following the butterfly but we are introduced to our first character drawing a butterfly we
see him release the butterfly from the jar this shows us a sense of a adventure starting
when we start to follow the butterfly.

Frankenweenie:
In the opening of Frankenweenie we see a normal family starting up a film to watch when
we are shown what they are watching we see a story too and that the narrative is based
around this boy and his dog as we have shot reverse shots from the Projection screen of
the dog back to the boy and his dog watching T.V.

Vincent:
In Vincent the narration in the opening helps us find out what the narrative would be as
we have different settings of Vincent changing from young and old repeatedly. Also in the
transformation on Vincent being old he wants to be an ‘evil scientist’ this leaves the us
with enigma codes ‘Why is he evil?’ ‘How did he end up like that?’ . This shows that the
narrative would be based around Vincent from being young and how he ended up being
a old, bitter, evil scientist.

  • 2. Corpse bride Color and Framing: Tim Burton uses a lot of dark dull colors such as grey and black in this animated film because they portray the image that he wants the audience to see , he also has the warner brother logo contrasted into a dark theme. The Framing has not got big establishing shots the framing shows a really simple and dull mise en scene which is interesting as Tim Burton uses very few settings similar to his Disney film Frankenweenie. Shot Types, Angles and Movement: In the Corpse Bride we have some POV (Point Of View) shots which mostly are low angles of the setting this is almost like we are seeing it from Burtons view in his vision. We are shown low angles and high angles when we are following the butterfly. The movement of the shots in Corpse Bride is really slow and flows whilst we are following the butterfly. Pace of titles and Editing: The titles come in the beginning as we have a panning shot going to antagonist drawing a butterfly . In this animated film the editing has been revolved around shots of us following the butterfly and there is a continuous flow. Burton makes the shots/scenes go perfectly through the opening. Burton’s signature in animation films is to have very few settings which he used in this film and this introduction of the setting and location helped the audience visualize what he wanted it to be and mean. We have non-diegetic orchestral music playing while our antagonist is drawing a butterfly, when he releases the butterfly we then have a crescendo which leads us following the butterfly we then are taken into the streets and we then have diegetic sounds of what people are doing while the music is lowered in the background and then comes back up when we are taken somewhere else.
  • 3. Frankenweenie Color and Framing: Burton has made this animation film in black and white this is similar to corpse bride because he has used dull grey and black colors we have this transition from the logo of the Walt Disney into black and white with thunder over it. the framing of this film is from Burtons view again of what everyone else is doing and him watching over. The framing then changes into us watching the T.V with the family in the film. Shot Types Angles and Movement: In the film opening we are only shown shots of the T.V screen and then the Shots of the family’s we have low angle shots of the family watching the T.V and then the T.V is showing slow movements of panning shots following what the characters are looking at this is interesting because Burton wants us to feel like we are actually watching T.V with the family this makes us feel more involved. Pace of titles and Editing: In the opening we have no titles we only have the logo of Walt Disney the logo is transformed into black and white and thunder over it this is a classic signature of burton’s as he changed the warner brother logo into black and grey in the Corpse Bride opening. The editing is similar to the Corpse bride as it has a continuous flow in the beginning with shots going back and forth from the T.V to the characters. How characters/place/time are introduced: When the character is introduced he is using a old fashioned screen projector to watch a filming and this shows us the time period. also the whole entire film is in black and white this also shows the times period as being old. We also see the animated character with high waited trousers with the top tucked in which shows their fashion from a different older time period. How do they utilize music and sound? In the opening all the sound is all diegetic. Then we have music hic is lowered when one of the characters speak and then put back up.
  • 4. Vincent Color and Framing: Again Tim burton has used Black and grey in his animated film, although the contrast is low the quality is still clear. The framing is going through different locations and the still framing shots of different settings and we are watching again over the characters like we are Burtons eyes. Shot Types, Angles and Movement: The main shot types that we have are still shots of the setting and the setting changes continuously in the beginning and then. We do not have many angle shots in the beginning we just have a POV (point of view) which we are seeing through. The only movement we have in the opening is when we follow the cat into the room we also have a movement if a panning shot into the next setting. Pace of titles and Editing: In the beginning we have a black bold background which we then have the titles coming up this is interesting because they only have two titles in a small print that comes up in the beginning. The Editing of the opening has some jumped changes from one setting to another but has a flow when panning. How characters/place/time are introduced: We are first introduced to our character when we have the cat jumping through the window we are introduced to other characters but there faces are not shown only from the neck and down. We know that the location is indoors in the house and the setting changes continuously in the beginning but remains indoors. The film is also in black and grey and this represents it as being old. but the time also changes with the setting fro Vincent repeatedly going young and old. How do they utilize music and sound? The sound that is used is narration but sounds like a old fashioned radio speaking. The sounds that we have are diegetic. In the opening we hear the flute and don't know where it is coming from which makes it non-diegetic and then when the cat jumps through the window we see Vincent playing it which makes it diegetic.
  • 5. If the genres of the films are different - is the signature style of the director still recognizable? The signature of Tim Burton is still recognisable in these three film because they are all animated and are based around horror/comedy . Corpse bride: Frankenweenie Vincent: Each character is animated which is a key feature of Tim Burton also these are and they all have key combination colour of black, grey and white. They also have the genre theme of Horror and Comedy. Another Tim burton trend to change the Disney logo’s into something different in his animated films:
  • 6. For each film sum up what you actually know about the narrative of the film from the opening two minutes. Corpse Bride: From the opening of the film we don’t see much of the narrative, in the opening we are following the butterfly but we are introduced to our first character drawing a butterfly we see him release the butterfly from the jar this shows us a sense of a adventure starting when we start to follow the butterfly. Frankenweenie: In the opening of Frankenweenie we see a normal family starting up a film to watch when we are shown what they are watching we see a story too and that the narrative is based around this boy and his dog as we have shot reverse shots from the Projection screen of the dog back to the boy and his dog watching T.V. Vincent: In Vincent the narration in the opening helps us find out what the narrative would be as we have different settings of Vincent changing from young and old repeatedly. Also in the transformation on Vincent being old he wants to be an ‘evil scientist’ this leaves the us with enigma codes ‘Why is he evil?’ ‘How did he end up like that?’ . This shows that the narrative would be based around Vincent from being young and how he ended up being a old, bitter, evil scientist.
