Evaluation Parts 4 and 5:
AUDIENCE IDENTIFICATION
AND APPEAL
Our Production
The audience of our media production is for teenagers and young adults with an age
range of 15-25. Our film is rated 15 because it is a horror and it is going to include scary
things that are too graphic for the age younger than that, but we didn’t want to produce a
film that was rated age 18 because that limited the number of people that can actually
watch our film. We chose this as our target audience because of the results we received on
our questionnaires. We made our film production appeal to our target audience by using
the same aged characters.
Although our target audience is teenagers and young adults, we feel that our film
production would appeal to a mass audience because we are targeting both male and
female audience members, and our film could actually be watched by anyone aged 15 and
older.
 Not everyone enjoys horror movies so it is quite hard to
distinguish a certain group and target them. However, I think that
according to the sociodemographic scale, our film would appeal
to a range of classes from class B to class D.
Uses and Gratifications
and Audience Pleasures
 The Uses and Gratifications theory is an approach to understanding why and how
people actively seek out specific media to satisfy specific needs. The theory asks
‘what people do with media’ rather than ‘what media does to people’ –Katz, 1959
 This film would appeal to anyone who likes horrors (because it is a horror),
thrillers, and psychological movies because they can all play tricks on the mind
and we are hoping our target audience enjoys things like that.
 This film also promotes social interaction because the characters work together
and rely on each other when battling obstacles. This can act as an audience
pleasure as it lightens the feeling and the mood of the audience in contrast with
the dark storyline.
