Passman has stated that most music videos now cost
between $15,000 and $50,000. How is this different
from previous eras?
2. Who are the specific audiences for
particular products?
• Explore your genre’s fans- search your
audience and similar artists and get a few
different pictures of their fans.
• Age/ Gender/ Ethnicity/ Dress sense
• Don’t be oversimplistic, an artist/band could
have multiple ‘types’ of fans.
3. How do media industries target those
audiences?
• Explore the ways in which music videos have
tried to lure in audiences of your genre. For
example:
- ‘celebrity’ cameos,
- messages & values
- shock/taboo topics/images
- gimmicks/viral videos
4. Own Audience Research
• Pitch the product to the rest of the group and take feedback,
noting the responses and deciding how to act as a result.
• Show early draft of the work (such as an animatic of the
storyboard) and ask some carefully framed questions about them
to get a sense of the audience’s understanding of the product
rather than just a measure of whether the audience like it.
• Take peer feedback at later stages and then again on the finished
product; asking things like “can you tell me what happened in that
sequence, what the relationship between the artist is and what do
you think will happen in the rest of the film?” to look for audience
readings of the work.
