Original Goal Statement 
Goal 
The media center is an important part of Antler Trail Elementary. As a class, 
students visit the media center for story time, research, and technology 
lessons. Individual students may also visit daily from 8:15 - 9:05 each 
morning. It is the goal of the Antler Trail Media Center to provide students 
with an easily accessible and organized collection of reliable print and web-based 
information that assists them in becoming independent life-long 
learners. The media resource specialist also recognizes the importance of 
collaborating with faculty and staff to create an extension of the classroom 
by planning literacy and technology lessons with the classroom teacher that 
will guarantee meaningful learning while supporting classroom instruction.
Correction Paragraph 
Though the Antler Trail Media Center goal statement does provide 
proof that students have an opportunity to visit the library with their 
classes and individually from 8:15 – 9:05 each morning, it does not 
currently address any additional opportunities students have for 
individual checkout/information services after 9:05 each day. 
Limiting students’ access to media resources also limits 
opportunities that students have to actively engage in quality 
learning experiences that prepare them for successful futures. 
According to the guidelines outlined in our Empowering Learners 
text, “The media specialist should ensure that library hours provide 
optimum access for learners and other members of the school 
community” (AASL, p. 33).
Correction Paragraph (Continued) 
Further, the statement, as it stands, does not address the need to 
provide a climate conducive to learning. Such an environment 
must be established in order for effective teaching and learning 
to occur. By “designing learning spaces that accommodate a 
range of teaching methods, learning tasks, and learning 
outcomes”, the media specialist supports an active style of 
learning that encourages collaboration and communication 
amongst its patrons (AASL, p. 33). Aside from the environment 
and limited checkout times, the goal statement does address the 
importance of collaboration. It could be changed, however, to 
include more of the local community to inspire the “beyond” part 
of the proactive connection.
Correction Paragraph (Continued) 
Finally, in looking at the original goal statement, we believe the 
word “goal” should be changed to mission. By creating “a 
meaningful mission statement with wide ownership”(Johnson, 37), 
the media specialist, with the help of an advisory committee, can 
intentionally build a strategic plan that genuinely reflects their 
mission, goals, and objectives. To improve the original goal 
statement, we believe the media specialist could change the 
statement to read like the following.

Mission Statement 
The media center is an essential part of Antler Trail Elementary. It 
is the mission of the media center to become the learning hub of 
the school by providing students with a nurturing environment 
that empowers them to be critical thinkers and life-long learners. 
By providing flexible and equitable access to an organized 
collection of reliable print and web-based information, students 
will be equipped with the skills necessary to demonstrate, apply, 
and communicate their learning in a global environment.
ATES Vision 
• Collaborating with the faculty and staff to create an 
extension of the classroom by planning literacy and 
technology lessons that create strong achieving students 
with attitudes that produce lifelong learners. 
• Providing the faculty and staff with the latest information on 
current technology trends in education through professional 
development. 
• Helping students and teachers to become technologically 
literate users who model responsible digital citizenship 
through the ethical use of information.
ATES Vision (continued) 
• Using technology and media resources to extend 
learning beyond the classroom and the school day. 
• Connecting and collaborating with the local and global 
community through social media, school website and 
other informational tools in order to foster relationships 
that empower students and families. 
• Using technology to improve communication between 
district stakeholders, ensuring that students, parents, 
teachers, administrators, support personnel, board 
members, and community members receive relevant 
information that maximizes learning opportunities and 
supports the mission and goals of the school.

  • 3. Original Goal Statement Goal The media center is an important part of Antler Trail Elementary. As a class, students visit the media center for story time, research, and technology lessons. Individual students may also visit daily from 8:15 - 9:05 each morning. It is the goal of the Antler Trail Media Center to provide students with an easily accessible and organized collection of reliable print and web-based information that assists them in becoming independent life-long learners. The media resource specialist also recognizes the importance of collaborating with faculty and staff to create an extension of the classroom by planning literacy and technology lessons with the classroom teacher that will guarantee meaningful learning while supporting classroom instruction.

Correction Paragraph Though the Antler Trail Media Center goal statement does provide proof that students have an opportunity to visit the library with their classes and individually from 8:15 – 9:05 each morning, it does not currently address any additional opportunities students have for individual checkout/information services after 9:05 each day. Limiting students’ access to media resources also limits opportunities that students have to actively engage in quality learning experiences that prepare them for successful futures. According to the guidelines outlined in our Empowering Learners text, “The media specialist should ensure that library hours provide optimum access for learners and other members of the school community” (AASL, p. 33).
  • 5. Correction Paragraph (Continued) Further, the statement, as it stands, does not address the need to provide a climate conducive to learning. Such an environment must be established in order for effective teaching and learning to occur. By “designing learning spaces that accommodate a range of teaching methods, learning tasks, and learning outcomes”, the media specialist supports an active style of learning that encourages collaboration and communication amongst its patrons (AASL, p. 33). Aside from the environment and limited checkout times, the goal statement does address the importance of collaboration. It could be changed, however, to include more of the local community to inspire the “beyond” part of the proactive connection.
  • 6. Correction Paragraph (Continued) Finally, in looking at the original goal statement, we believe the word “goal” should be changed to mission. By creating “a meaningful mission statement with wide ownership”(Johnson, 37), the media specialist, with the help of an advisory committee, can intentionally build a strategic plan that genuinely reflects their mission, goals, and objectives. To improve the original goal statement, we believe the media specialist could change the statement to read like the following.
  • 7. Antler Trail Elementary Media Center Mission Statement The media center is an essential part of Antler Trail Elementary. It is the mission of the media center to become the learning hub of the school by providing students with a nurturing environment that empowers them to be critical thinkers and life-long learners. By providing flexible and equitable access to an organized collection of reliable print and web-based information, students will be equipped with the skills necessary to demonstrate, apply, and communicate their learning in a global environment.

ATES Vision • Collaborating with the faculty and staff to create an extension of the classroom by planning literacy and technology lessons that create strong achieving students with attitudes that produce lifelong learners. • Providing the faculty and staff with the latest information on current technology trends in education through professional development. • Helping students and teachers to become technologically literate users who model responsible digital citizenship through the ethical use of information.

ATES Vision (continued) • Using technology and media resources to extend learning beyond the classroom and the school day. • Connecting and collaborating with the local and global community through social media, school website and other informational tools in order to foster relationships that empower students and families. • Using technology to improve communication between district stakeholders, ensuring that students, parents, teachers, administrators, support personnel, board members, and community members receive relevant information that maximizes learning opportunities and supports the mission and goals of the school.
