This document describes a test method for determining the particle size distribution of fine aggregates through sieve analysis. Here's a great example: At a large natural gas-fired power plant, where they use waste heat to generate steam and energy, they were puzzled that their boiler wasn't producing as much steam as expected.
R&R and Tetra Engineering Group Inc. were asked to solve the issue with reduced steam production.
An inspection had shown that a significant amount of hot flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes, where the heat was supposed to be transferred.
R&R Consult conducted a CFD analysis, which revealed that 6.3% of the flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes without transferring heat. The analysis also showed that the flue gas was instead being directed along the sides of the boiler and between the modules that were supposed to capture the heat. This was the cause of the reduced performance.
Based on our results, Tetra Engineering installed covering plates to reduce the bypass flow. This improved the boiler's performance and increased electricity production.

Significance
The obtained results are used to determine compliance of the particle size
distribution with applicable specification requirements and to provide
necessary data for control of the production of various aggregate products and
mixtures containing aggregates. The data may also be useful in developing
relationships concerning porosity and packing.

4. Procedure
Step 1: Dry the sample to a constant mass at a temperature of 110 degree
centigrade. A +/- tolerance of 5 degree is acceptable.
Step 2: Weigh the dry sample, the empty sieves and the pan.
Step 3: Nest the sieves in order to of decreasing size of opening from top to
bottom and place the pan at the bottom of the set.
Step 4: Place the sample on the top sieve.
Step 5: Place the lid and agitate the sieve in the mechanical shaker for 10 min.
Step 6: Weigh the sieves with the material retained. Determine the weight
retained in each sieve. The total weight of the material after sieving should
check closely with the original weight of the sample. If the amount differ by
more than 0.3 percent (based on the original weight), the results will be
