This document summarizes a presentation on a study of gender participation in African agricultural research and higher education. Some key findings were that the proportion of female agricultural researchers and students has increased slightly over time but remains low overall. Female participation varies widely between countries and is generally lower in engineering and soil science. The study also found fewer women than men being promoted and more men departing institutions. The Agricultural Science and Technology Indicators initiative plans to expand data collection and analysis on this topic to better inform policies promoting gender balance.
