This document summarizes the ASSURE method for a first grade special education classroom lesson on teaching the months of the year. It will analyze the students, which includes seven students with ADHD. The objectives are for 90% of students to know the months of the year by the end of the year. Methods will include using a flip chart, audio materials, and show and tell to teach the months. Students will learn the months through singing a song that includes motions for each month and creating their own calendars. Participation will be evaluated and methods revised if needed to ensure all students are learning.

ASSURE Method
A – Analyze Learners
This is a special education first grade classroom. There are ten boys and seven girls within the
classroom, at which seven of these students have a mild case of ADHD. This class consists of
70% white students, 20% African-American students, and 10% Latino students. With seven of
the students having a mild case of ADHD a variety of approaches must be made not only to
accommodate for those children but the way the other children learn as well. To determine what
the students may or may not know, it is important to observe the students and ask questions at
which relate to the topic. This will help determine where to start when teaching and how to
approach the students with the material.
S – State Objectives
The students will be able to state the months of the year in order by singing the months of the
year song and by creating their own calendars. At the end of the year 90% of the students will
know the months of the year.
S – Select methods, Media, and Materials
I will use flip chart, audio materials, and show and tell to help the students establish what months
are the months of the year.
U – Utilize Media and Materials
In the beginning I will show the students what a calendar looks like and explain to them how a
year is separated into twelve different months. Then explain to the students how there are twelve
different months in a year and how each calendar they may see will be different in regards to the
pictures that go with each month. Then I will demonstrate the “Months of the Year” song. The
song goes to the song the Macarena, at which requires the students to not only sing but to
physically dance to the song. The lyrics are:
January (right hand faces down)
February (left hand faces down)
March (right hand faces up)
April (left hand faces up)
May (right hand on left shoulder)
June (left hand on left ear)
July (right hand on right ear)
August (left hand on left ear)
September (right hand on left waist)
October (left hand on right waist)
November (right hand on right hip)

Then wiggle hips and say: Twelve months in a year!
This will help the students remember the months of the year in order and will be sang each day at
the beginning of the class. After learning this song I will show the students that each month has
certain holidays at which people celebrate. I will then ask how many birthdays are in January,
February, and so on to demonstrate to the students that every month has a holiday in it. Then I

2. will put the students into groups where they are able to create their own calendars and
incorporate the holidays for each month. I will give out a list of holidays possible for each
month. Each group will be required to do research and incorporate at least one holiday they
weren’t familiar with and discuss with the class about that holiday and the rest of their calendar.
R – Require Learner Participation
By teaching the students a song at which not only do they recite but they dance to as well, it will
be a requirement for each student to participate each time the song is sang. When creating the
calendars and teaching the students about different, relating a certain holiday like for example a
birthday, will help students remember certain months of the year.
E – Evaluate and Revise
During the song if some students are not participating in the movements or not singing, then maybe
putting the students in groups and having each group preform will ensure that all students are learning the
song. When creating their own calendars, each person is required to participate. Therefore,giving each
student a specific job within the group will help to ensure that all students are participating and
understanding the material.
