This document defines assistive technology as any item, equipment, or product system that helps individuals with disabilities increase, maintain, or improve their functional abilities. Assistive technology includes low to high-tech options and can help with issues like speaking, typing, writing, remembering, seeing, hearing, and learning. Selecting the right assistive technology usually involves professionals developing an Individualized Education Plan to address a student's specific needs. Examples of assistive technology include hearing aids and FM systems for hearing impairments, audio books and optical character recognition for reading, and abbreviation expanders and alternative keyboards for writing.
