Assignment 3: Direct Manipulation
Due Week 8 and worth 80 points
Early computer systems relied on command line interfaces to perform all actions. Today, the majority of systems use direct manipulation rather than a command line interface. The goal of designing a direct manipulation interface is to make use of the system intuitive to the end user. One industry that has been extremely successful designing intuitive direct manipulation inputs is the video game industry. Most game players are able to learn controls as they play a game and then apply the same controls to similar games. Rarely do they need to read a user manual.
Write a four to five (4-5) page paper in which you:
1. Describe the three (3) principles of direct manipulation and give examples as to how they are used in video game controls.
2. Analyze video game-type interfaces and discuss three (3) reasons why video game-type interfaces would not be effective for real-world applications.
3. Describe at least three (3) advantages of direct manipulation versus command line interfaces.
4. Evaluate direct manipulation and describe three (3) problems with it.
5. Use at least three (3) quality resources in this assignment. Note: Wikipedia and similar Websites do not qualify as quality resources.
Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:
• Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and references must follow APA or school-specific format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.
• Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required assignment page length.
The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are:
• Describe direct manipulation and virtual environments.
• Use technology and information resources to research issues in human-computer interaction.
• Write clearly and concisely about HCI topics using proper writing mechanics and technical style conventions.

Introduction
Learning to communicate appropriately and effectively in a variety of settings and in a variety of formats is an important skill in both academic and professional environments. In an online learning environment, learning to communicate effectively through writing is particularly important because it is, by far, how the majority of communication occurs. Review the learning objectives for this module within the course syllabus and use the following lecture, which is about various forms of written communication used in the online graduate setting, to accomplish them.
Paraphrasing
Paraphrasing the ideas of others is a requirement in academic writing and graduate study. Paraphrasing is using your own words to restate ideas or information from a source material. Paraphrasing will help you grasp the full meaning of the source material and allow you to appropriately reference the source material to support your own ideas and academic writing. Paraphrased material is usually shorter and more concise than the original information. The following are some common guidelines taken from the Purdue Online Writing Lab (2012), which may assist you with learning to paraphrase information gathered from reading materials for use in completing your coursework.
Reread the original passage until you understand its full meaning.
Set the original passage aside and, on a note card, write what you think the passage means in your own words (paraphrase).
Jot down a few words below your paraphrase to remind you later of how you plan to use the information. At the top of the note card, write a key word or phrase to indicate the subject of your paraphrase.
Compare your paraphrase with the original to make sure that your version accurately expresses all the essential information.
Use quotation marks to identify any unique term or phrase you copied exactly from the original source.
Record the source (including the page) on your note card so that you can cite it easily if you decide to incorporate the material into a paper or discussion question response.
The following is an example of paraphrasing (Purdue OWL, 2012), which i.

Exegesis Research Paper Instructions
Using Introduction to Biblical Hermeneutics by Kaiser and Silva as a reference guide, you will write an Exegesis Research Paper submitted in 3 parts. You will choose between 3 biblical passages listed below on which to write the paper.
Passage Options:
· Psalm 1:1–6
· Mark 4:26–34
· Ephesians 4:7–16
Each part of the paper will begin the process of helping you gain experience with submitting an Exegesis Research Paper through the following stages:
Part 1: Introduction and Context of the Passage
You will write an introduction that serves as an overview of the content of the paper, providing background and cultural information about the setting of the book in which the selected passage occurs. You will write a thesis/purpose paragraph that alerts the reader as to what you plan to achieve in the writing of the paper. Identify the literary context of the selected passage and discuss its relevance for interpreting the passage. Each section will have its own heading following current Turabian style. Be sure the paper uses the School of Divinity Standardized Title Page and reflects a graduate level of vocabulary.
Part 2: Meaning of the Passage and Bibliography
Rewrite Part 1 as needed, taking into consideration any feedback provided by the professor. In addition, address the meaning of the passage, utilizing resources identified in the accompanying bibliography. List 10 sources relevant to the paper, cited in current Turabian format as interpreted by the School of Divinity Writing Guide. The sources must be current and scholarly (written by academics with credentials that qualify them to write, not popular treatments written for laity) using those found in the ATLA database as a guide.
Part 3: Significance of the Passage (Final Version)
Rewrite Parts 1 and 2 as needed, taking into consideration any feedback provided by the professor. In Part 3 of the paper, address the significance and application of the passage to the Christian life and church ministry. Each paper must have a coherent conclusion that summarizes the content of the textual analysis. Submit a 2,500–3,000-word final version of the paper (double-spaced, in 12-point font). You must carefully edit the final version for spelling, grammar, and syntax. Perfection in the implementation of current Turabian format is expected.

Indexing language concept types and characteristicsDr. Utpal Das
This document discusses subject indexing languages. It defines subject indexing language as a set of controlled vocabulary terms and their relationships that are used to describe the concepts in documents. There are three main types of indexing languages: natural language, which uses terms directly from the document; controlled vocabulary, which uses standardized terms from an authority list; and free indexing language, which uses any terms. The key aspects of subject indexing languages are that they allow concepts from documents to be represented in a structured way to facilitate information retrieval.

The document discusses what a corpus and concordance are. A corpus is a large collection of texts stored electronically that can be analyzed. A concordance is an alphabetical list showing words from a text and their contexts. Concordancing software allows querying a corpus to find all instances of a search word in context. The document then provides examples of how concordancing could be used for language teaching, such as discovering grammatical patterns, identifying collocations, and filling in gaps.
Research Paper Guidelines When preparing and writing the .docxeleanorg1
Research Paper Guidelines
When preparing and writing the research papers, students must be attentive to the following basic
requirements. It is imperative that students read and follow these guidelines to ensure a good grade.
1) A research paper involves both the gathering of information and developing a student’s own
interpretation of that information. The student must stay focused on his or her chosen topic and
rely upon his or her sources for information about that topic. While a student’s own opinions about
a topic are an important part of any research process, the student must be able to support his or
her conclusions by direct reference to sources.
2) The writing must be clear and logical and as free of spelling and grammatical errors as possible.
A student should never submit a paper without rereading and proofing it. It may even be
necessary to get someone to assist in this process by having him or her read the paper and
check for these mistakes. The student should not fail to run spell-check on his or her writing.
Please remember that easily correctable spelling and grammatical mistakes left uncorrected will
result in significant loss of points.
3) This paper requires MLA formatting that includes:
a. 12-point font
b. double-spaced sentences
c. title and personal identification
d. a separate works cited page properly formatted
e. specific bibliographical form for print and electronic sources in your works cited
f. a specific form for parenthetical (in-text) citations of the sources listed in your works cited
The student will be graded on how well his or her style conforms to the above basic requirements
in MLA.
4) The works cited must include no less than four sources. Those sources must be relevant to the
topic and meet minimum academic qualifications. The acceptable types of sources include the
following:
a. class text
b. print or electronic book
c. electronic, peer-reviewed journal article
d. website with a .edu address
5) Certain sources do not qualify for works cited. You will be penalized if you use them. These are:
a. Wikipedia
b. standard dictionary or encyclopedia (web or paper)
c. any website not .edu
The student should remember that any source listed in your works cited that does not meet the
above criteria will not count towards the minimum number of required sources.
6) For every source listed in the works cited, a student must have at least one corresponding
parenthetical (in-text) reference. This will demonstrate how a student has used the source.
The student should remember that any source not accompanied by at least one parenthetical
reference (and any parenthetical reference not associated with a source in your works cited) will
not count towards the minimum number of required sources.
While research is vital, so is the proper accounting for that research. All students must use MLA
guidelines for the papers. For a sample of a correct.
Lexicography involves processes for determining word meanings and constructing dictionaries. It includes designing guidelines, researching words and definitions, and formatting entries for publication. There are two related disciplines: practical lexicography focuses on compiling dictionaries, while theoretical lexicography analyzes lexicons and develops theories to improve dictionaries. Corpora are important resources used in both disciplines to study word usage and inform dictionary content. Word sketches were developed to efficiently analyze large corpora and streamline the process of identifying relevant collocates for dictionary entries.
Scientific and technical translation in English - week 3 2019Ron Martinez
The document provides an overview of the course "Scientific and Technical Translation in English: Week 3". It outlines the aims and activities for the current week, which include looking critically at grammar, exploring the use of electronic tools, and introducing machine translation and the translator's role in machine translation assisted translation. The document also discusses challenges in scientific writing and provides examples of coherence issues that could lead to manuscript rejection. It emphasizes the translator's role in improving clarity and coherence to facilitate publication. Homework involves analyzing introductions for certain issues and comparing machine and human translations.
This document provides guidance on drafting a literature review, including how to cluster sources by subject headings, write generalizations and analyze sources under each heading, and conclude by summarizing discussions and identifying gaps for further research. Key steps include annotating sources, highlighting keywords to group sources under headings, writing topic sentences to introduce headings, using sources to support arguments through paraphrasing and non-integral citations, and pulling ideas together to transition into identifying areas for additional work.
This document discusses how to design, acquire, and process a collection of linguistic data to form the raw material for a dictionary. It explains that a reliable dictionary requires evidence from language used in real communicative acts. While introspection and informant testing provide some evidence, they are limited due to subjectivity. Therefore, observation of language in use through large text corpora is indispensable. Key considerations in corpus design include size, inclusion of different text types and styles to avoid bias, and ensuring representativeness.

Lexicography involves processes for determining word meanings and constructing dictionaries. It has two related disciplines: practical lexicography which is compiling dictionaries, and theoretical lexicography which analyzes dictionary components and user needs. Lexicography uses corpora to decide word definitions and usages. Corpora have been used to produce dictionaries and grammar books. Lexical profiling software and word sketches streamline the process of analyzing large corpus data for dictionaries by identifying relevant collocations for different grammatical relations. This case study found word sketches provided a more efficient way to uncover key word features than traditional concordance analysis.

•Wealth, power, and status should be redistributed for the good of the individual, the community, and the society.
•It is the responsibility of the government (or those who hold significant power) to ensure a basic quality of life for all its citizens.
From country to country social justice is defined in different ways, and the definitions usually include ideologies as well as differences. Research the definition of social justice in the United States using your textbook, the Argosy University online library resources, and the Internet. Select another country to examine its definition of social justice in order to analyze the ideologies and similarities using the following steps:
1.Analyze the ideologies.
2.Identify the similarities.
3.Using your reasoning skills, give supporting statements or arguments that support your position(s) about the social justice.
Your comparing and contrasting must consider the following:
•Historical values and ideologies of the country
•Economic structure of the country
•Discrimination issues, if any exist
Develop a 2–3-page analysis of the definitions of social justice in the U.S. and a country of your choice. Analyze the ideologies, identify their similarities, and explain how these factors support your statements or arguments about the social justice you've selected. Support your explanations with a minimum of two scholarly sources in addition to the course text and apply APA standards to citation of sources.
Use the following file naming convention: LastnameFirstInitial_M1_A3_Defining_Social_Justice.doc. For example, if your name is John Smith, your document will be named SmithJ_M1_A3_Defining_Social_justice.doc.

Assignment 3 Cultural Activity ReportDue Week 10 and worth 100 po.docxursabrooks36447
Assignment 3: Cultural Activity Report
Due Week 10 and worth 100 points
As a way of experiencing the Humanities beyond your classroom, computer, and textbook, you are asked to do a certain type of “cultural activity” that fits well with our course and then report on your experience. Your instructor will require you to propose an activity and get instructor approval before you do it and report on it (students should look for any instructions in that respect). Every effort should be made to ensure that this is a hands-on experience (not a virtual one), that this activity fits the HUM 112 class well, and that the activity is of sufficient quality for this university course. The two (2) key types of activities are a museum visit or a performance.
Note
: This must not be a report on the same activity (and certainly not the same report) as done for another class, like HUM 111. For instance, one might go to the same museum as done for HUM 111, but this HUM 112 report will focus on entirely different works and displays.
Visit a museum or gallery exhibition or attend a theater, dance, or musical performance before the end of Week 10. The activity (museum or performance) should have content that fits our course well. Have fun doing this.
Write a two to three (2-3) page report (500-750 words) that describes your experience.
Clearly identify the event location, date attended, the attendees, and your initial reaction upon arriving at the event.
Provide specific information and a description of at least two (2) pieces.
Provide a summary of the event and describe your overall reaction after attending the event.
Use at least the class text as a reference (additional sources are fine, not necessary unless required by your content). Your report should include connections you make between things observed in your activity and things learned in the course and text.
Note
: Submit your cultural activity choice to the instructor for approval before the end of Week 5 (earlier is even better). Look for guidance from the instructor for how or where to make your proposal. You may also seek advice from your instructor (provide your town / state or zip code) for a good activity in your general area.
Visiting a Museum
It makes sense to approach a museum the way a seasoned traveler approaches visiting a city for the first time. Find out what is available to see. In the museum, find out what sort of exhibitions are currently housed in the museum and start with the exhibits that interest you.
If there is a travelling exhibition, it’s always a good idea to see it while you have the chance. Then, if you have time, you can look at other things in the museum.
Every effort should be made ahead of time to identify a museum that has items and works one can easily connect to our HUM 112 class and book. Since HUM 112 covers from 1600 AD to the present, it makes more sense to focus on items from this time frame. In general, museums with fine arts work better than history .

Due Week 10 and worth 140 points
The history of correctional institutions is well documented. Correctional institutions (jails and prisons) house individuals who are awaiting trial and serving both short- and long-term sentences. Correctional officers are responsible for the monitoring, treatment, and supervision of individuals who have been found guilty by a court of law.
For this assignment, we will take you inside a look at the "
Most Violent Prison 2016 - Part 1 - Maximum Security
."
Describe the main methods Sergeant Baldwin and his staff use to maintain order and safety in the prison. Take a position on the effectiveness, risks, pros and cons, and ethics of these methods.
Choose one (1) of the inmates profiled in this video--Terry Dibble, Simkayta Winfield, Jerico Jones, or Gregory Crowder--and discuss their situation. Explain how they ended up at Statefield, the main issues they described facing, and the methods they use to cope with their time in prison.
Discuss the effect you feel the presence of the active armed guards has on the violence level and overall safety within this prison.
Describe the issue of isolation in Statesville presented in this video and the effects connections and contact with outside visitors can have on the prisoners' mental status.
Identify at least two (2) issues that gay inmates here uniquely face. Identify at least one (1) method of protecting gay inmates against each of these identified issues.
Take a position on how you believe conditions at Statefield could be improved. Include at least two (2) specific actions that could be taken to improve conditions (e.g., security and safety, abuse and use of force, isolation, poor food quality, etc.). Provide a rationale for your position.
The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are:
Summarize the current ethical issues faced by criminal justice professionals and the future of the criminal justice system.

Assignment 3 Bill of RightsWhen the Constitution was completed in.docxursabrooks36447
Assignment 3: Bill of Rights
When the Constitution was completed in the summer of 1787, approval by representatives from nine of the thirteen states was needed for it to become the nation’s law. The issue of individual rights was managed—though this, too, created conflict among the Framers—with the addition of the Bill of Rights. Change was written into the supreme law of the land; since then, legal institutionalization of changes has occurred. Since the Constitution’s adoption, change has taken place through the amendment process identified in the Constitution. Change has also occurred under the direction of the branches of government established in the Constitution: the executive, the legislature, and the judiciary.
Research
The Bill of Rights is the first ten amendments to the U.S. Constitution. Review the Bill of Rights in your textbook and select one of the first ten amendments to research more thoroughly. Using the Argosy University online library resources, select at least three peer-reviewed articles about the amendment you have selected. Look specifically for articles that focus on current events or controversies related to the amendment and be prepared to summarize the content of each article.
Annotated Bibliography
Prepare an annotated bibliography of your research. Please read

Assignment 3 Assault, Battery, and Crimes against PersonsRe.docxursabrooks36447
Assignment 3: Assault, Battery, and Crimes against Persons
Review the following scenario in order to complete this assignment:
(A) is walking to towards her car in the shopping mall parking lot when a man suddenly jumps in front of her, points a knife in her face, and demands her purse. The attacker strikes (A) and rips the handle of her purse. Fortunately, (A) took self-defense class and hits the attacker with her knee and fists, keeps her purse, and runs to safety.
Use the Internet or Strayer databases to research assault, battery, and crimes against persons.
Write a four to six (4-6) page paper in which you:
1. Compare and contrast the key similarities and differences between the crime of assault with a deadly weapon and the crime of felonious and aggravated battery. Provide one (1) example of each crime to support your response.
2. Determine whether or not the jurisdiction in which the crime has occurred should consider the man’s actions as assault. Next, determine whether or not the jurisdiction should punish the man’s actions as battery. Justify your response.
3. Suggest one (1) different fact pattern that would change the scenario from felonious and aggravated assault and / or battery to simple assault. Support the validity of your response.
Consider the following change to the scenario. (A) is forced at knifepoint into her car and made to drive the suspect away from the mall, where they encounter a police roadblock. (A) is not allowed to leave the car, despite the police negotiator’s demand that she be allowed to exit the car.
1. Discuss the crime of kidnapping. Next, debate whether or not the suggested change in Question 3 would allow the court to convict the attacker for the crime of kidnapping. Provide a rationale to support your response.
2. Differentiate between the crimes of hostage taking and kidnapping. Support or critique the notion that one of the two crimes is more serious than the other. Justify your response.
Consider the following change to the scenario. (A) and the attacker are romantically linked and are having an argument in the shopping mall parking lot. (A) pulls a knife from her purse and swings it at the attacker.
1. Debate whether or not (A)’s action would require the attacker to defend himself. Provide a rationale to support your response.
2. Use at least three (3) quality academic resources in this assignment. Note: Wikipedia and similar types of websites do not qualify as academic resources.
Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

Assignment 3 America as a Superpower For History 105 Dr..docxursabrooks36447
Assignment 3: America as a Superpower
For History 105: Dr. Stansbury’s classes (7 pages here)
Due Week 9 and worth 120 points
. The formal deadline is on Monday morning at 9am Eastern Time; this is the next day after Week 9 ends. Watch announcements, emails, and postings for exact dates and any holiday notes that sometimes arise.
[NOTE ON ECREE:
As you know from our first two papers, the university is adopting a tool called
ecree
for helping and doing writing assignments in many classes. In our History 105 class, we will be using the
ecree
program only for EXTRA CREDIT as a tool for doing work on your rough draft of the paper.
We hope this approach encourages more rough drafting and revision work by students as well as makes students familiar with this useful new tool.
For Assignment 3, in the Week 9 unit, you will see the link “EXTRA CREDIT: ROUGH DRAFT….”—that is where you can get up to 5 points of extra credit.
Instructions will be posted there in the early days of the summer course.
If you try this option, you will be able to use the file developed in ecree as a rough draft; you will then download that draft and edit it further.
Then, once your paper is fully polished and finished
as you see fit, you will then submit it at the next link in the Week 9 unit, which says “SUBMIT ASSIGNMENT 3:
AMERICA AS A SUPERPOWER
”.
]
The previous assignments focused on domestic matters in U.S. history. This last assignment explores America’s international role in recent decades.
BACKGROUND FOR THE PAPER
: This is a 5-paragraph paper based on research in designated sources. It is a position paper in which you support a thesis statement by reason and historical examples. By the mid-20th century, the United States had become the dominant force in international relations. Some have argued that the United States’ military functions as the world’s “police.” This assignment covers the manner in which this shift occurred and the consequences the United States faces as a result of its status as “policeman of the world.” One can identify early steps this direction well before World War II, but in this paper focus on the period from 1950 to the present. The American international “policing” role developed because of the Cold War, but now terrorists or any power having or trying to get weapons of mass destruction (WMD) are the potential targets of such a role. Your paper will use specific examples—two from the Cold War years (roughly 1950-1990) and two from the past three decades (1991-2019). Examine the two statements below and drawing from provided sources and the university’s online library, present a paper with specific examples and arguments to demonstrate the validity of your position. [Don’t use this background paragraph in your paper.]
NOTE
: The word “policing” here has nothing to do with traditional law enforcement agencies. It is more about trying to manage parts of the globe—usually by use of military force or the threat of it. Th.

Problem 1: Movie ADT
You have been hired to an inventory system for movies that will allow the user to add, remove, and search for
movies in the collection. In this exercise, you will complete and test an initial implementation of the Movie ADT
that will be the heart of this inventory system.
Step 1: Movie.java
Create a class file Movie.java based on the description provided in the class diagram given below:
Step 2: Implementation of the compareTo() method
We have discussed the Comparable interface in class and we have seen some methods in the Collection interface
and Collections class that use the compareTo() method. What would be a good method for determining whether
one movie is less than, equal to, or greater than another movie? This is called the “Natural” ordering for the movie
ADT. Implement your compareTo() method.
Step 3: Exception Handling
• The constructor should throw a java.lang.NullPointerException if title is null and
a java.lang.IllegalArgumentException if year is negative.
• equals() & compareTo() methods should throw a java.lang.NullPointerException if
its argument is null.
Step 4: Test.java
A driver file Test.java has been provided with the Assignment. You will modify the driver program to perform
the following steps:
1. Instantiate eight objects of type Movie and add them to the movie List.
2. Print out the unsorted list of movies.
3. Sort the list of movies using Collections.sort().
4. Print out the sorted list of movies.
5. Search for a particular movie in the list using Collections.binarySearch()
6. Test your equals method.

Assignment 3 Direct ManipulationDue Week 8 and worth 80 points.docx
1. Assignment 3: Direct Manipulation
Due Week 8 and worth 80 points
Early computer systems relied on command line interfaces to
perform all actions. Today, the majority of systems use direct
manipulation rather than a command line interface. The goal of
designing a direct manipulation interface is to make use of the
system intuitive to the end user. One industry that has been
extremely successful designing intuitive direct manipulation
inputs is the video game industry. Most game players are able to
learn controls as they play a game and then apply the same
controls to similar games. Rarely do they need to read a user
manual.
Write a four to five (4-5) page paper in which you:
1. Describe the three (3) principles of direct
manipulation and give examples as to how they are used in
video game controls.
2. Analyze video game-type interfaces and discuss three
(3) reasons why video game-type interfaces would not be
effective for real-world applications.
3. Describe at least three (3) advantages of direct
manipulation versus command line interfaces.
4. Evaluate direct manipulation and describe three (3)
problems with it.
5. Use at least three (3) quality resources in this
assignment. Note: Wikipedia and similar Websites do not
qualify as quality resources.
Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:
• Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman
font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and
references must follow APA or school-specific format. Check
with your professor for any additional instructions.
• Include a cover page containing the title of the
2. assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the
course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page
are not included in the required assignment page length.
The specific course learning outcomes associated with this
assignment are:
• Describe direct manipulation and virtual
environments.
• Use technology and information resources to research
issues in human-computer interaction.
• Write clearly and concisely about HCI topics using
proper writing mechanics and technical style conventions.
Word Study Instructions
Philippians 2:1 (NA28)
Εἴ τις οὖν παράκλησις ἐν Χριστῷ, εἴ τι παραμύθιον ἀγάπης, εἴ
τις κοινωνία πνεύματος, εἴ τις σπλάγχνα καὶ οἰκτιρμοί,
Each student will complete a word study on a significant word
in their selected passage and write a 400-500-word exegetical
essay describing their findings and conclusions. The word study
will focus on correct method, sound conclusions, and relevant
sources for consultation. The essay should be in 12 point, Times
New Roman font. Format per the Turabian guidelines.
Resources for Turabian formatting may be found in the Online
Writing Center. Your paper should follow the footnote method
of citation.
Follow the guidance below to construct your essay:
1. Select an approved word from your passage for your word
study.
2. Work through the Word Study Procedure described on the
following pages of this document. Create your own lexical entry
based on observing the denotations and connotations of your
word in various contexts. You won’t need to turn this in, but it
3. will be useful as a template for the content of your essay.
3. Show that you have investigated the variety of ways and
contexts in which your word is used. Describe the various
contexts in which your word is used, and then explain what it
means in those contexts. Think of this as a description of the
main categories proposed in a lexicon entry that you are
writing, but please write in paragraph form (unlike lexicon
entries).
4. Describe what your word means in the context of your
passage. Then consult a few English translations and state
which translations best capture the meaning of the word in the
context of the passage. Perhaps you will need to propose a new
translation.
5. Cite Scripture using parenthetical citation – like this (2 Cor
2:14). You don’t need to cite secondary sources in this exercise,
but simply refer to them as needed. For example, “The editors
of BDAG proposed a meaning of the verb that does not really
seem to exist when the references are examined.”
[See below]
Word Study Procedure
Select a significant word
Some words involve a narrower range of meaning than others,
and not every word is equally important for the meaning of a
clause, sentence, passage, etc.
For this assignment, you will select one of the pre-approved
words from your passage.
Briefly consult a Lexicon such as Strong’s, Friberg, Thayer, or
BDAG:
Note the general options available for the word in question. You
want to get a general sense of how lexicon editors think your
word is used. Keep in mind that these options are not the
authoritative categories; they are the observations of the lexicon
editors, which may be right or wrong. For the sake of getting
4. into the right mindset, it would be good to assume that all of
these lexicons have involved insufficient or problematic
consideration of the evidence, which forces you to take
everything with a grain of salt and formulate conclusions based
on your own examination of that same evidence.
You can access Strong’s lexical entries in the MyWSB app. You
will need to search based on the English word in the interlinear
or the Strong’s code.
You can also use biblearc.com, which gives you access to the
SBL Greek New Testament. You can easily navigate to your
selected passage, find the Greek word you are studying, and
click open a menu that guides you to Strong’s, Thayer’s lexical
entry for the word, the parsing, and further search capabilities.
You can also access Thayer, A Greek-English Lexicon of the
New Testament, online here.
You can access an abridged version of the BDAG, The Concise
Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament, in the
“Electronic Resources” folder of the “Course Content” area in
Blackboard.
a. Read some of the Scripture references listed in the various
headings the lexicon entry for this word to get a sense of the
categories that the editors have proposed. You want to get a
quick “lay of the land” at this point without getting bogged
down in the details.
Find references of your word in the breadth of Greek literature
from the ancient world [read this section, but skip this step in
the assignment]:
Consult Liddell and Scott, A Greek-English Lexicon, to see a
fuller range of how your word was used in Greek literature. You
can access the lexicon here.
This step is not needed for this assignment.
Find references of your word in the Septuagint (LXX):
5. b. If you are using software to do this, such as biblearc.com,
Logos, MyWSB, or Accordance, you will search on all
occurrences of the lemma (another term for the lexical form of
the word). Note that biblearc.com allows you to search the
Greek text of the LXX just by switching from SBL to LXX in
the search options.
c. If you do not have this software, you will need to use the
following reference work in the Jerry Falwell Library: A
Concordance to the Septuagint and the other Greek versions of
the Old Testament (including the Apocryphal books). The
author/editors are Hatch and Redpath. Its location in the library
is BS1122 .H3 1998. Here is a full text version of the e-book on
Google Play.
d. As you read each use of your word, try to note the contextual
features associated with your word. In what contexts does your
word occur, and what does it signify in those contexts? What
are the nuances, connotations, and subtle shades of meaning that
might be apparent in one use of your word but not another?
Find references of your word in the New Testament:
e. Using a tool such as biblearc.com, Logos, or MyWSB,
examine all the occurrences of your word in the NT. Your goal
is to get a sense of how the word is used and what other
contextual features are present when your word is used. Try to
create your own lexicon entry for your word based on this step
and step #4 above.
f. If you download the Logos app, you will be able to search for
your word in the following manner:
i. Add the free SBLGNT (Society of Biblical Literature Greek
New Testament) to your library.
ii. Find your word and then click on it. Select the form of your
word that has “Lemma” written next to it, then choose “Search
this version.” That should pull up all occurrences of your word
in the New Testament.
Consult the BDAG Lexicon or the Abridged BDAG Lexicon if
you cannot access the full version:
6. g. You can access an abridged version of the BDAG, The
Concise Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament, in the
“Electronic Resources” folder of the “Course Content” area in
Blackboard. This is sufficient for this assignment unless you
already have access to the full BDAG elsewhere.
h. Here is the info for the full version of the printed copy in the
library: A Greek-English lexicon of the New Testament and
other early Christian literature. Danker, Frederick W. Library
call number PA881 .B38 2000.
i. Compare the lexicon entry with the categories proposed in
Strong’s and Thayer. Also compare the categories to your notes
about how the word is used and the contextual features
associated with the word. See whether BDAG editors classify
your word differently than you do.
Consult an Exegetical Dictionary
Consult NIDNTTE:
You can access this in the “Electronic Resources” folder of the
“Course Content” area in Blackboard.
New International dictionary of New Testament Theology and
Exegesis. Edited by Brown. Second Edition edited by Silva.
Library call number is BS2312 .N48 2014.
This and the source below will be more extensive than a lexicon
such as BDAG. Therefore, you should note the categories
proposed by the editors, but also note their descriptions of the
contextual features associated with each use of the word.
Baltz and Schneider Exegetical Dictionary:
This is a similar resource to the above.
Exegetical Dictionary of the New Testament. Horst Balz and
Gerhard Schneider. Library call number BS2312 .E913 1990.
j. Note the contextual features associated with each use of the
word, but also the development of the word’s use through time
(diachronic analysis). Also note how the word is used in Jewish
and Christian literature in comparison with how it is used in
classical literature.
Formulate conclusions:
k. Describe the various contextual features associate with your
7. word, and how different contexts lead to different uses of your
word (or different meanings of your word).
l. Compare the context of your selected passage with the various
contexts that you came across in your research. The context
should lead you to a conclusion about how the author uses the
Greek word.
m. Propose a translation of your word and then describe what
your word means in the context of the passage.
Requirements for the Word Study assignment:
n. Word count: 400-500 words in 12-point Times New Roman
font.
o. Show that you have investigated the variety of ways and
contexts in which your word is used. Describe the various
contexts in which your word is used, and then explain what it
means in those contexts. Think of this as a description of the
main categories proposed in a lexicon entry that you are
writing, but please write in paragraph form (unlike lexicon
entries).
p. Describe what your word means in the context of your
passage. Then consult a few English translations and state
which translation best captures the meaning of the word in the
context of the passage. Perhaps you will need to propose a new
translation.
NOTE: Content highlighted in green throughout should NOT be
included in any student’s
8. paper. Such content is included herein as flags to note and bring
attention to special rules.

13. comprehensive “Chicago” style.
Turabian is named for Kate L. Turabian, the author of A Manual
for Writers of Research Papers,
Thesis, and Dissertations: Chicago Style for Students &
Researchers, which is currently in its
9th printed edition.1 This sample paper will strive to provide
students with all the foundational
elements of a Turabian paper using the Notes-Bibliography
format for students majoring in
History, (some) Government, and Divinity programs of study.
All class assignments will follow
the Notes-Bibliography format except book reviews, which use
the Author-Date format (see
the Author-Date section of the OWC’s Turabian Quick Guide
for resources on that format).
Many incoming students have opted not to purchase the
Turabian manual; this can have
significant negative effects on those students’ ability to learn
and master Turabian format.
Fortunately, Liberty University subscribes to the Chicago
Manual of Style (CMOS) database in
its Online Library for those students who do not have a current
Turabian manual readily
available to them. Since the Turabian manual is the official
14. resource commonly used in
academia, the Online Writing Center (OWC) strongly
encourages students to buy the current
Turabian manual (about $10 for hard copy or electronic
version). This sample paper, however,
includes references to the correlating CMOS section(s),
delineated by red hyperlinked text to
denote the relevant CMOS section, in an effort to ensure all
Liberty University students have the
necessary resources to excel academically. It is not proper to
include hyperlinks or colored
lettering in academic class papers; those are merely included
here for ease-of-access purposes.

15. This paper will focus primarily on the stylistic elements
discussed in Chapters 16 and 17
of the Turabian manual2 —with some minor revisions.3
Students will need to incorporate proper
grammatical elements to their papers as well, but those will not
be addressed in detail herein.
It is important to delineate that undergraduate students will not
use headings,
subheadings, or a contents page in most of their class papers.
Graduate and doctoral students
are recommended to include these elements for any paper with
at least ten pages in the body,
and required to do so in all papers with twenty or more pages in
the body. Those elements are
all included and illustrated throughout this sample paper for
organization and ease-of-access
purposes, but students should adhere to the parameters in their
specific class assignment to
determine whether or not they should include subheadings (and
a contents page, when
appropriate) in that class paper and use the appropriate template
provided on the OWC’s
Turabian Quick Guide page.
Many students’ papers will require an introductory section that
16. summarizes or previews
the argument of the whole paper, though this is not universally
required for all papers.4 It should
be set apart as a separate First-Level Subheading (addressed
below). Leave one double-spaced
line beneath the word Introduction and the text that follows, as
shown above.5 Turabian suggests
that “most introductions run about 10 percent of the whole.”6
She also suggests that conclusions
are typically shorter than introductions.
2 Turabian, A Manual for Writers, 149-235.
3 For example, footnote numbers in standard Turabian are not
superscripted and are followed by a period
(pages 149-50, 162, and 406 of the Turabian manual), but
Liberty University programs require superscripted
numbers with no periods, as depicted throughout this paper.

Ibid.
The abbreviation ibid. is used in most cases to refer to “the
same” source cited
immediately before on the same page7—in this case, footnotes
#5 and #6 on the prior page. One
of the changes in the 9th edition of the Turabian manual was to
discourage the use of the term
ibid. However, all schools and departments within Liberty
University have universally decided to
continue to require and encourage its use at this time, as it is a
long-used historical term that will
occur in many scholarly resources printed prior to 2018,
including most seminal works. As such,
students are instructed to disregard Turabian’s 2018 position on
the use of ibid. for all Liberty
University coursework.
The term ibid. itself is a Latin abbreviation (which is why it is
italicized in the text of a
sentence), so do include the period. Capitalize it when it begins
18. the footnote, since it depicts the
beginning of a sentence, but do not italicize the term in notes.8
If the page numbers for that
footnote and the one preceding it differ, use Ibid. followed by a
comma and the correct page
number(s), as shown in footnotes #5 and #6 on the previous
page. If the page number is the same
for both the current footnote and the one that precedes it,
simply use the word Ibid. for that
second footnote, as shown in footnote #8 below.
Liberty University’s History Department allows students to
carry forward the use of
ibid. onto subsequent pages as long as there are no other
sources cited between them. For
all other students, however, each new page of a student’s paper
restarts the requirements, so the
first footnoted citation to a source on each page would include
the author’s name and a shortened
title (if previously cited), then students can resume using ibid.
for subsequent consecutive

citations on that page, as shown in footnotes #8 above and #12
below. Standard Turabian format
allows two forms of shortened notes,9 but Liberty University
programs of study require the
author-title version that includes both the author’s name and a
shortened version of the source’s
title. Footnote #11 below (and the first footnote on each new
page referring to the Turabian
manual) depicts a shortened note—where the author’s name is
given, along with a few words of
the title. Always include the page number, whether using a full
footnote or a shortened note.
Basic Formatting
Overview
Turabian generally offers writers great flexibility in the choices
they make regarding
many stylistic elements.10 However, Liberty University’s
schools and departments have adopted
specific requirements as detailed herein. General formatting
elements11 required include:
20. • One-inch margins on all four sides of the paper.
• Liberty University requires Times New Roman size 12-pt. font
for all content in the
paper itself, except Times New Roman 10-pt. font for all
footnote content.
• Double-spacing throughout the body of the paper, except in
the footnotes, block quotes,
table titles, and figure captions. Lists in appendices should be
single-spaced, too.12
• Quotations should be blocked if the citation is five or more
lines.
9 Turabian, A Manual for Writers, 164-66.
10 For example, Turabian does not specify a font size or style,
although all programs of study at Liberty
University using Turabian require Times New Romans, 12-point
font. Many other elements are also left by Turabian
up to individual writers; the OWC has incorporated its own
educated judgment for those in this sample paper, but
students have freedom to stray from those, where permitted in
the Turabian manual.

Title Page
The Turabian manual provides two different examples and
details for the title page
format options.13 Liberty University has adopted the more
formal one, as shown in this sample
paper and in the templates provided to students.
Page Numbering
The title page should not include any page number,14 although
it is considered the first
page of any paper. The front matter (anything between the title
page and the first page of the
body of the paper) should be numbered with lowercase Roman
numerals centered in the footer,
beginning with ii, to correspond with the fact that it begins on
page two.15 The paper’s body,
bibliography, and appendices display Arabic numerals (i.e., 1,
2, 3) placed flush-right in the
22. header, beginning with page 1 on the first page of the body of
the paper.16 Liberty University
now offers students templates that are already formatted with
pagination, margin, font, etc.
Table of Contents
Although this page/section is commonly referred to as the “table
of contents,” only the
word “Contents” should appear at the top, centered, without the
quotation marks.17 Students may
not need a table of contents, but one was included in this sample
paper as a visual aid, and
because it is lengthy enough to include subheadings. Liberty
University assignments will specify
if students are required to include subheadings and/or a contents
page. Generally, subheadings

and a contents page are required for assignments with twenty
pages or more of content, and both
are encouraged for assignments of ten to nineteen pages of
content.
The table of contents can span more than one page when
necessary, as it does in this
sample paper. Double-space between each item but single-space
the individual items themselves.
Add an extra line between each of the major sections (including
the front and back matter). It is
important to note that a table of contents does not list the pages
that precede it; only those pages
that follow it. Be sure that the first letter of each word is
capitalized (other than articles and
prepositions within the phrase).
“Leaders” —the dots between the words on the left margin and
their corresponding page
24. numbers at the right margin in a table of contents—are
acceptable. Only include the first page
each element begins on; not the full page-span.18 MS Word will
automatically populate this.
Number all pages of this element with Roman numerals. If the
table of contents is more
than one page, do not repeat the title. Leave two blank lines
between the title and the first listed
item.19 Single-space individual items listed but add a blank line
after each item. Between the lists
for the front and back matter and the chapters, or between parts
or volumes (if any), leave two
blank lines. This video tutorial shows how to format
subheadings and convert those into a
Contents page for larger projects.
Thesis Statements
Section A.2.1.4 of the Turabian manual discusses the placement
and labeling of an
abstract or thesis statement. Specifically, it acknowledges that
“most departments or universities

have specific models … that you should follow exactly for
content, word count, format,
placement, and pagination.”20 This paper does not include a
separate sample thesis statement
page; some classes will require such. Do not confuse a purpose
statement with a thesis statement,
however. A purpose statement states the reason why the paper is
written. For all practical
purposes, the purpose statement introduces the thesis statement.
An example of a purpose
statement is, “The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate that
when one recognizes God’s
freedom, he/she can find biblical inerrancy defensible.” An
example of a thesis statement is,
“Biblical inerrancy is defensible in the context of divine
freedom.” Remember, the purpose and
thesis statements determine the form and content of an outline.
The distinction between a purpose statement and a thesis
26. statement is important. The
purpose of this sample paper is to provide a template for the
correct formatting of a research
paper. The thesis is, “Students who use this paper as a sample
or template are more likely to
format their papers correctly in the future.”
Line Spacing
Section A.1.3 of the Turabian manual addresses line spacing.21
As mentioned above, all
text in papers should be double-spaced except for block quotes,
table titles, figure captions, and
lists in appendices. The table of contents, footnotes, and
bibliography entries should be single-
spaced internally, but double-spaced between each entry.22
Turabian specifies in Section A.2.2.4
to “put more space before a subheading than after.”23 Liberty
University recommends adding an

extra single-spaced line before each subheading, so the total
space between the end of one
section and the next subheading should be the equivalent of
three single-spaced lines (or one-
and-a-half double-spaced lines); this is demonstrated throughout
this sample paper and pre-
programmed into the Turabian templates. For those students
who wish to learn how to format
this element themselves, see the tutorial on formatting
subheadings. There should only be one
space after periods and other punctuation at the end of each
sentence, before beginning a new
sentence.24
Capitalization
Turabian style has two forms of capitalization for titles:
headline-style and sentence-style.
In headline style, all major words in a title (usually those with
four or more letters, excepting
prepositions) begin with capital letters.25 In sentence-style,
only the first word of a title, the first
28. word of a subtitle, and proper nouns begin with capital
letters.26 Liberty University courses use
headline style for subheadings.
Chapters versus Subheadings
Turabian allows each writer to determine whether to use
subheadings or chapters to
divide his or her paper into sections.27 There are separate rules
for both. Chapters are usually
reserved for thesis projects and dissertations; subheadings are
often used for class papers of

graduate and doctoral students. Class assignments will specify
whether subheadings are
permitted or required.
Turabian allows great flexibility and individuality in how one
formats the various
subheading levels, when used. Liberty University has adopted
the format for heading levels
shown herein, for the sake of consistency and uniformity.
The title of a heading should never be “orphaned” at the bottom
of a page, without its
supporting text.28 If there is not enough room on the previous
page for both the heading title and
at least the first line of the paragraph, begin a new page.
Authors can, however, have two
headings in a row29 as shown on page 17 below. The formats
used and recommended in this
sample paper reflect that:
1. First-level headings should be centered, bolded, and use
headline-style capitalization.
30. 2. Second-level subheadings should be centered, not bolded, and
use headline-style
capitalization.
3. Third-level subheadings should be left-justified, bolded, and
use headline-style
capitalization.
4. Fourth-level subheadings—though rare in Turabian style—
should be left-justified, not
bolded, with only the first letter of the first word capitalized.
5. Fifth-level subheadings are extremely rare; they should be
indented ½” from the left
margin, not bolded, italicized, in sentence case (including a
period), followed by one
space, with the text following on the same line.
28 Turabian, A Manual for Writers, 405.

10
31. Except for fifth-levels, all text would begin on the line beneath
the heading. Note that
there must be at least two of any subheading used under a larger
heading.30 Turabian also does
not allow orphaned headings, where the heading appears at the
bottom of the page, isolated from
its content on the next page.31 First- and second-level
subheading levels are used throughout this
sample paper, but below is a visualization of each of five levels.

Abstract Expressionism (Third-level)
Major painters and practitioners (Fourth-level)

“Voice” and Tense
As a general rule, use active voice and avoid first person (I, me,
we, us, our) or second
person (you, your) pronouns in academic writing unless
permitted by the assignment
32. instructions. This paper uses third person (one, this author). In
historical writing, use simple past
tense verbs, but when referring to an author’s written work, use
present tense.

Organizing a Paper Using an Outline
When writing a paper, students should organize their outline
first so that they are able to
plan how they will make their argument and then give their
reasoning and evidence to support
their thesis statement. The first paragraph of each section
should explain how this will fit into the
author’s reasoning, and then each section will end with a
summary of how the evidence has
33. shown such reasoning to be correct. Also, transitions are very
helpful at the end of each major
section so that the reader anticipates how the next section is
connected to the logical progression
of the reasoning the author uses to support his or her thesis.
Liberty University undergraduate papers will generally be less
than ten or twelve pages
and most will not use subheading levels or a contents page at all
(unless specified in the
instructions); most Liberty University graduate and doctoral
research papers will be no longer
than twenty pages and generally will not have long and detailed
outlines or subheadings beyond
the third level.32 Details that would be appropriate for the
fourth or fifth heading level tend to
distract the reader’s attention from the overall thesis within a
short essay (typically fewer than 20
pages). Even if a fourth level is unavoidable, a fifth level is
discouraged.
Quotations and Paraphrases
All content gleaned from another source will be presented as
either a quote or a
paraphrase. A paraphrase means that the original wording has
34. been change sufficiently into the
student’s own words while keeping the same meaning (not
simply just rearranging the order of
the words or replacing only a few of them); a direct quote
means that the words are used
verbatim, which requires quotation marks. Both require a
citation with a page number to the
32 Papers with ten to nineteen pages in the body are
recommended to include subheadings and a contents
page; those with twenty pages or more are required to do so; the
instructions will specify what is required.
12
original source. Quotes with four or fewer lines of text in the
student’s paper will be incorporated
into the text of the paragraph, as has been demonstrated herein
(such as the bottom of the first
paragraph on page ten).
Quotes that span five lines or more, however, must be block
quoted. Blocked quotations
are single-spaced with one blank line before and after each
35. excerpt, and the entire left margin of
the block quote is indented one half-inch. No quotation marks
are used when using a blocked
quotation, but do use them if it contains an internal quote.
Turabian requires blocked quotes to be
introduced in the writer’s own words.33 For example, Jackson
evokes the supremacy of home:
Housing is an outward expression of the inner human nature; no
society can be fully
understood apart from the residences of its members. A
nineteenth-century melody
declares, “There’s no place like home,” and even though she
had Emerald City at her
feet, Dorothy could think of no place she would rather be than
at home in Kansas. Our
home are our havens from the world.34
Citations
All content that is taken from another source must include a
citation, whether direct-
quoted or paraphrased. Though Turabian allows two forms of
citing sources in the body of a
paper, this sample paper focuses exclusively on the notes-
bibliography style. Chapters 16 and 17
36. of the Turabian manual focus on these elements (Chapter 14 in
the CMOS). The “N” denotes
(foot)notes, and the “B” denotes bibliography entries. Be sure to
use the correct format for each
since there are some variances between them for each resource.
Notably, the first/only author’s
name is inverted (i.e., last name first) in bibliography entries,
but not in notes.35

37. When formatting a footnote, indent the first line of each
footnote the same amount as the
first line of the paragraphs within the paper (1/2”). The
indentation should be before the
superscripted footnote number. Insert one space after the
superscript number before the first
word of the footnote.36 The footnotes should be single-spaced,
and there should be a single blank
space between (or 12-pt. line space after) each footnote.37 Font
within the footer should be 10
point (the OWC recommends Times New Roman, 10-pt.).
There is one notable exclusion to notes formatting that most
Liberty University students
will encounter. The version or translation of the Bible being
used must be identified in the text
with a parenthetical reference (e.g., 1 Cor 1:13, ESV).38 If an
author chooses to use the same
Bible translation (such as the English Standard Version)
throughout the paper, he or she should
add a footnote in the first usage stating, “Unless otherwise
noted, all biblical passages referenced
are in the English Standard Version.” This means that that
author will not need to reference the
version of the Bible in subsequent citations unless he or she
38. changes the version (otherwise, each
citation must also include a footnote entry crediting the source).
For example, if the student
identified the English Standard Version as the primary version
but chose to use the New
International Version (NIV) when quoting a particular verse
such as John 14:6, the parenthetical
citation following the passage would be (John 14:6, NIV).
36 This rule is specific to Liberty University. In standard
Turabian, the footnote number is not superscripted,
and it is followed by a period.
37 Turabian, A Manual for Writers, 162.
38 Ibid., 204; see also section 24.6.
14
When citing one source quoted in another, Turabian encourages
students to go to the
original source and cite it directly.39 In those cases where the
original cannot be located or
accessed, cite both resources as detailed in Section 17.9.3.
39. An example of each of the major types of footnoted resources is
included herein for
sample purposes. Note that writers would only include footnotes
and bibliography entries for
resources whose content was actually used in supporting the
author’s position in a paper. Note
also that author names are never inverted in notes. These
samples that follow are for illustration
purposes only, and each source footnoted herein is also included
in the bibliography section. See

Special Applications
Examples of Citing the Bible
Many students struggle with the proper formatting in citing the
Bible. When citing
biblical passages, there are some general guidelines to follow
that are important. It is not
necessary to write out full quotes of verses or paragraphs from
the Bible since readers can find
the references that are cited. Citations are quoted in full when
the author needs to make a specific
observation, such as when he/she chooses to follow Luke’s
example in his message to
Theophilus; “so that you may know the exact truth about the
things you have been taught” (Luke
1:4).73 Notice in footnote #73 below that only a single footnote
is needed when identifying the
Bible version, providing the paper cites from only one
48. translation. All the following biblical
references are given in the text of the paper, not in the
footnotes, unless content in the footnote
requires biblical references. If an author uses multiple
translations or versions of the Bible, then
he or she would have to use one footnote for each new version
and use a system of abbreviations
in the text, but only within parentheses (NASB, KJV, NIV,
etc.). The writing is simplified if the
author chooses one version of the Bible and uses it exclusively;
then he or she can provide a
disclaimer footnote to that effect as stated in footnote #73.

to the.”
73 Unless otherwise noted, all biblical passages referenced are
in the English Standard Version (Wheaton,
IL: Crossway, 2008).
49. 18
In the actual text of a paper, be sure to follow proper
grammatical and style requirements.
Here are some correct examples of how to cite references or
allusions from the Bible. Luke
wrote to Theophilus in verse four of his first chapter so that his
patron would have a more exact
understanding of the details of the salvation offered also to the
Gentiles. Luke claims that he
wrote his Gospel, “in consecutive order,” after having
“investigated everything carefully from
the beginning” (Luke 1:3). In verse one of Chapter One, Luke
seems to be aware of previous
Gospel accounts, but in Luke 1:2, he claims that he has
information from eyewitnesses. Note in
the previous example that authors are permitted to use standard
biblical references like Luke 1:2
within a sentence as long as it is introduced as a biblical
reference rather than as part of the text
of that paper.
The abbreviations for the books of the Bible can be used only in
50. parentheses within the
text or in footnotes.74 For example, an author may make a
reference to Romans 1:16, but if he or
she states that Christians should not be ashamed of the gospel
(Rom 1:16), then the author should
use the abbreviation within parentheses. The following
examples are all correct: Paul, in verse
sixteen of Chapter One of his Epistle to the Romans, states that
he is not ashamed of the gospel;
Paul states that he is not ashamed of the gospel (Rom 1:16); and
in Romans 1:16, Paul states that
he is not ashamed of the gospel.75
74 Turabian includes a comprehensive list of abbreviations for
the books of the Bible in sections 24.6.1-
24.6.4. Liberty University, however, requires its students to use
the Bible abbreviations as itemized in the Sacred
Book Reference List and Capitalization Glossary.
75 Notice the word “gospel” is not capitalized when referring to
the evangelical message (i.e. “good news”).
It is capitalized when referring to one of the first four books of
the New Testament, however.

52. Numbering
Any number used in the text that is less than one hundred and
any whole number of
hundreds should be spelled completely within the body of the
paper (one hundred, two hundred,
etc.).78, 79 Generally, if the number can be written with one or
two words, it should be spelled
completely. For numbers written with more than two words
(i.e., 108 or 210), numerals should
be used. However, one should never mix the styles. If any
number used must be written with
numerals, then all should be in the same style (i.e., 98, 108,
210, 300; not ninety-eight, 108, 210,
three hundred). Of note here is an exception that when writing
percentages in the text, write 98
percent or 100 percent, and so forth;80 always using the
numeral, but writing out “percent.”

numerals can be used (e.g. 100, 200, etc.).

Permalinks
Some resources have permalinks available. They may appear as
a paperclip or linked-
chains icon, or by the word Permalink. This webpage explains
more. The age of internet
technology has significantly increased the number of resources
available online, which trend is
expected to continue. URLs based on DOIs are most reliable;
use those whenever possible. If
there is no DOI-based URL, use a permalink when available.81
If one cannot find a viable URL
that does not require log-on credentials, then omit the URL
altogether and substitute the name of
the database (i.e., ProQuest).82

Turabian manual.83 See the

Turabian – Ebooks with No Page Numbers
Section 17.1.10 addresses electronic books, or ebooks.84 The
bottom paragraph of that
section has all the specifics, including not citing app-specific
location numbers, but instead citing
the details necessary for the reader to locate that content in any
version of that resource (i.e.,
chapter or section name or number). See footnotes #48-51

55. Bibliography Entries and Tips
The bibliography list itself begins on a new page following the
Conclusion, even though
a great deal of room may be left on a final page. To do this,
hold down the “Ctrl” key and then
hit the “Enter” key, which will drop the cursor down to an
entirely new page to start the
bibliography. Type the word Bibliography, centered, in bold
type, followed by one blank line.
The bibliography is single-spaced but with an extra blank line
(or 12-pt line space) inserted
between each entry. Chapter 17 of the Turabian manual is
dedicated to the various forms of
bibliographic entries.85
The following depicts a bullet list summary of bibliography
rules and parameters:
• Use the term Bibliography for the final list of bibliographic
entries. Other terms such as
References or Works Cited are not acceptable.
• Bold the title, center it, and begin a new page with normal
page numbering.
• Use a one-half inch hanging indention for the second+ line(s)
56. of each.
• Use single-line spacing between (or 12-pt. line spacing after)
entries.
• Only cite sources directly referenced in the body of the paper.
Do not cite works that
have only been consulted. For every bibliography entry, there
should be a footnote and
vice-versa.
• When including two or more works from the same author in
the bibliography, Liberty
University has opted to use eight underscore lines (________)
in place of the author’s
name for the second+ bibliography entries. There are three
resources by Kenneth T.
Jackson in the bibliography list of this paper. The first includes
his name; the second and
third have the underscored lines in place of that.
• Break the URL at a logical breaking point (after a period, /,
etc.) to go to the next line. Do
this by placing the cursor where it should break, then click Ctrl-
Enter.
• When consulting an anthology where all the chapters are
written by different authors,
57. insert the inclusive page numbers of that particular chapter in
the bibliographic entry. If
citing from a book within a collection of books, also insert the
inclusive page numbers of
that particular book in the bibliographic entry.
• When citing an article from an online library/search engine,
authors do not need to cite
the search engine or article address if the article is in the same
form as it would have been
in a print journal (typically this can be discerned as the case if
the online article is
downloadable into a .pdf). If one does need to cite the link to
the article, it is preferred to
cite the article using the Digital Object Identifier (DOI). If no
DOI is available, make sure
to use a permalink rather than a link copied and pasted from the
web browser’s address
bar. When signed into the Liberty University Jerry Falwell
Library online using a

58. username and password, then the address from the address bar
will not work for anyone
who does not have a Liberty University username/password.
• Italicize book titles; use quotation marks for article titles.
• Do not include the Bible in the bibliography. Since the Bible
is considered a sacred work,
cite it initially in the footnotes and subsequently in
parenthetical references. For example,
note the parenthetical reference in the following sentence:
Christ declares his exclusive
salvific value when he states, “I am the way, the truth, and the
life” (John 14:6). The
Bible reference is not included within the quotation marks
because it is not a part of
Christ’s declaration. The period would come after the
parenthesis because one cannot
begin a new sentence without a period immediately preceding it.
Conclusion
The conclusion of a paper in Turabian style should reiterate the
thesis (though not
necessarily verbatim) and provide the audience with a concise
59. summary of all the major points.86
The importance of an effective conclusion cannot be overstated,
as it frames the writer’s closing
thoughts and should provide a lasting impression on the reader.
This is the last page of text in the body of the paper. Even
though it only covers the first
half of the page, drop down to the next page before beginning
the bibliography. We invite
Liberty University’s online students to take advantage of the
OWC’s tutor-review services once
they have their drafts written:

Historical Context Essay Instructions
Each student will write a 400-500-word exegetical essay
describing the historical-cultural context of their selected
passage. This essay should be based primarily on a close
reading of the New Testament book in which the selected
passage is found. Therefore, students should prepare for their
essay by following the inductive method described below while
referring to the concepts covered in the assigned reading and
course materials. Please do not consult textbooks,
commentaries, or other resources until you have worked through
the scenario and method below.
Here is the inductive method you will use to construct the
essay:
1. Adopt the mindset of a detective or researcher. Imagine that
you’ve discovered an ancient text buried deep in the archives of
66. the Scriptorium in the Rawlings School of Divinity at Liberty
University (this sort of thing happens in libraries from time to
time). You have been tasked with deciphering the hand-written
Greek text and presenting a report about it to the Dean of the
School of Divinity. The Dean will be addressing the media with
information about the discovery, so you will need to determine,
as best as possible, the following information:
· who wrote the text;
· when it was written,
· where it was written;
· to whom it was addressed and sent;
· what purpose it served in those historical circumstances;
· and whether it is a forgery or fake (those do exist in the
antiquities market).
There is no textbook to grab that will give you these answers;
you are the expert since you’re the only person alive who has
read the text. Therefore, the only guidance you have is the
information in the text itself. Only be as precise as the
information in the text allows you to be. For the sake of getting
into the right mindset and maintaining good method, it might
help you to pretend that no book such as this exists in the New
Testament; though you are able to compare what you find in it
to the other books of the New Testament.
2. You must draft a report (400-500 words) for your Dean,
presenting this information, as best you can discern it, from the
text. Since the Dean will be addressing the media about the
discovery, any statement about the text’s historical
circumstances/context will need to be supported with evidence.
Therefore, when you describe the date or author, you need to
include the evidence from the text that led you to your
conclusions (use chapter and verse citations). Evaluate the
evidence so that your Dean knows how confident you are of the
information and conclusions in your report.
67. 3. As part of your report, focus especially on the passage you
selected in Module/Week 1. Based on the information you’ve
given the Dean about broader historical questions (who, what,
when, where, why, and how?), do you think there are any
historical or cultural issues that the Dean should be aware of
when the media ask questions about the meaning of the passage?
Are there any events, customs, titles, activities, social
structures, or concepts that reflect the ancient historical
culture/setting, which might have an impact on how people
today interpret the meaning of this passage in the ancient text?
The Dean will need to tell the media what plans the Divinity
School has for further historical-cultural research of the text
and this focal passage. So, your report should prepare the Dean
with a recommendation.
Format:
The essay should be 400-500 words in 12 point, Times New
Romans font. Format per the Turabian guidelines. The purpose
of the scenario above is to help you get into the kind of mindset
that it will take to do well on this assignment. The point is to
read the text itself and reconstruct the historical-cultural
context based on a close reading of the internal evidence. Your
course professor does not need to read a report about what other
scholars think; you are the expert! With that said, please just
write the report that the scenario above calls for without
elaborating on the scenario itself. This assignment requires your
analysis, observations, and evaluation of the text.
This assignment is due by 11:59 p.m. (ET) on Sunday of
Module/Week 3.
Resources for Turabian formatting may be found in the Online
Writing Center. Your paper should follow the footnote method
of citation.
