This document discusses current issues and trends in educational technology and proposes ways to address needs in the future. It argues that current educational practices focus too much on content rather than skills, and that technology plans prioritize acquiring computers over instructional integration. To be effective, future educational technology must incorporate professional development for teachers, instructional strategies, and curriculum integration of technology to prepare students with 21st century skills.

17. Joseph (2001) describes eLearning Delaware as a web based model that provides educators effective opportunities in professional development that benefits teachers in subject content and teaching practices. 21 20

18. 22 The Center for Distance Learning and Innovation of Newfoundland is a Canadian Web-based model that may address teacher and student needs in the present and future. 23

19. Harschuh (n.d) and the Boston College 2009 survey support virtual learning opportunities as necessary in order to meet the needs of future students and the professional development needs of teachers.
