1. What is Effective
Technology Integration
for 21st Century Learners.
Figure 1. Computer integration around the world
2. People in the 21st century live in a technology and
media-suffused environment, marked by various
characteristics, including:
1) access to an abundance
of information.
(Route 21)
Figure 2. Too much technology
3. 2) Rapid changes in
technology tools. (Route 21)
Figure 3. Living in old school times
4. 3) the ability to
collaborate and make
individual contributions on
an unprecedented scale.
(Route 21) Figure 4. Collaboration
For these three ideas to be able to work in our 21st
century society, citizens must be able to display
functional and critical skills related to information,
media and technology. (Route 21)
5. Example
• William a teacher at Brookside Elementary school
integrated technology into his classroom. Here is what
he discovered:
Figure 5. Tech in Classroom
• Students respond more to visual information. (Ex. Maps, Graphs, Pictures, etc)
• Students compare data and observations with schools around the country.
• In the past, students’ presentations were limited to their observations and data.
6. • Now students include data collected by others as well.
• This allows them to summarize and compare data.
• Students’ questions are broader in scope, deeper, and more reflective.
• Addition of technology has not driven changes in teaching and learning but rather has
supported them. (Feldman, Coulter, & Konold, 2001)
