Chinese is the hardest language in the
world

You need about 3000 characters to read
a newspaper
• Ancient China created one of the first writing system known to
  men

• They began to write on large animal bones and the undersides
  of tortoise shells (甲骨文)
• Pictorial Word –
  Man

• It means, a
  masculine person
  working in a field
• Pictorial Word –
  Woman

• See how a picture
  evolves into word!
• Many languages, one script

• The official national language is standard Chinese, based on
the Mandarin dialect. It is spoken by more than 70 percent of
  the population.

• Many Chinese speak Cantonese, Shanghainese, and Hakka
dialects. Each minority speaks its own dialect or language

• English is spoken by many businesspeople

• Although spoken Chinese has many dialects (some of which
are as different as English is from German) there is one
  common written language
• You can practice writing Chinese at home ..
• Art work. Artistic word.

• The sequence of writing is the most
  important!
You may not know

• Written Chinese does not have a future tense, or any
  other verb tense.

• Therefore, the sentence “Wo mai shu” can mean: I bought
  a book, I buy a book, or I will buy a book.

• Time frames can only be determined by the context of
the sentence, or by time indicators like “tomorrow.”

• Fun, isn’t it?

Misconception 7

restaurant, everyone gets a fortune
               cookies
• Cultural shock for a Chinese in a
  Chinese restaurant in America
You may not know

• When a Chinese greets another Chinese, he or she will say:

• Have you eaten? Are you full now?

• Think – why?
Misconception 8

The people ride around on bicycles
        even in the cities
It is fast changing especially at the coastal area
Daily life in China is different depending on age, class, lifestyle, etc.

For children
• Many will get up early to get ready to go to school - by school bus, public
transport, walking, or taken there by their parents

• After school which is usually between 2 or 4pm, they will make their way
to after-school classes, tutors, or home. SPORT?

• When finally getting home they will do their homework either before or
after dinner then go to bed.
For most adults:
• Work during the day; getting to and from work can either be done by
walking, taking public transport, riding their bike or driving

• Married couples or single adults still living at home will more likely cook
something and eat dinner at home then spend a relaxing night in watching
tv, reading, watching dvds or helping kids with their homework.
For most adults

• The older and retired generation may get up early and do their morning
exercises, tai chi, dancing at a local park.

• During the day they may choose to spend time with their friends, watch
their grandchildren while their own children go to work, or play Chinese
chess with friends at the park.
Daily life in China is different depending on age, class, lifestyle,
etc.

• As with any country, life is different for everyone. These
aren't by any means a standard for all of China. Just a general
idea of what people may do on a daily basis.

                            Confucius
Religion View

• Buddhism, Islam, and Christianity are the three major formal
  religions practiced in China

• However, even larger numbers of Chinese believe in
traditional Chinese philosophies, notably Confucianism and
  Taoism.

• Confucianism, although not a religion with a divine deity, has
  great influence on Chinese society.

• Confucius was a Chinese scholar and statesman who lived
during feudal times over 2,000 years ago. He established a
rigid ethical and moral system that governs all relationships.
Confucius taught that …

• The basic unit of society is the family

• In order to preserve harmony in the home, certain responsibilities
  must be preserved in relationships

• These relationships are between teacher and student, between
husband and wife, between father and son, between elder brother
and younger brother, and between friends.

• Since all but the last are hierarchal, rank and age have historically
been very important in all interactions.

• All actions of the individual reflect upon the family, and filial
devotion is of utmost importance. The virtues of kindness,
propriety, righteousness, intelligence, and faithfulness have also
  been deeply revered.
• Lastly ….
   • We just spent 40 minutes to go through a nation with 5000
      years of history
   • A blend of tradition and modernity
   • Lots of gem for you to explore and discover!
