"Does Foreign Direct Investment Negatively Affect Preservation of Culture in the Global South? Case Studies in Thailand and Cambodia."
Do elements of globalization, such as Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), negatively affect the ability of countries in the Global South to preserve their culture? This research aims to answer this question by employing a cross-sectional comparative case study analysis utilizing methods of difference. Thailand and Cambodia are compared as they are in the same region and have a similar culture. The metric of difference between Thailand and Cambodia is their ability to preserve their culture. This ability is operationalized by their respective attitudes towards FDI; Thailand imposes stringent regulations and limitations on FDI while Cambodia does not hesitate to accept most FDI and imposes fewer limitations. The evidence from this study suggests that FDI from globally influential countries with high gross domestic products (GDPs) (e.g. China, U.S.) challenges the ability of countries with lower GDPs (e.g. Cambodia) to protect their culture. Furthermore, the ability, or lack thereof, of the receiving countries to protect their culture is amplified by the existence and implementation of restrictive FDI policies imposed by their governments.
My study abroad in Bali, Indonesia, inspired this research topic as I noticed how globalization is changing the culture of its people. I learned their language and way of life which helped me understand the beauty and importance of cultural preservation. I believe we could all benefit from learning new perspectives as they could help us ideate solutions to contemporary issues and empathize with others.

4. Key points
4
• Around the world TDI looks at the two types of emerging digital innovation
o New models and ways of delivering insurance, and
o Solutions that take what we have always done and do it better
• Holistic approaches to insurance, particularly health, where the insurer engages
with customers in new ways, are particularly promising i.e. Prudential’s myDNA
• Companies like Lemonade deliver insurance, but would describe themselves as a
behavioural science and technology company, not an insurer
• TDI is now building a research database of InsurTechs that when complete will
offer an analytics service to the market

Working together to accelerate the digital transformation of insurance
We are moving from
an industry
traditionally pooling
risk to actually
analysing risk by risk
and that will have a
fundamental change
to insurance
Laka is looking to disrupt
the insurance market by
using a cost plus model to
add value to customers,
following an FCA sandbox
concept and Startup
Bootcamp, they are
launching with no premium
paid up front and all risk
pooled
Using the power of
the insurance
company to benefit
the customer is to be
commended
Track Active an AI customer
engagement platform to
provide early scalable self-
help interventions for
rehabilitation, that aims to
change the attitude and
mindset of those that have
been injured
Overview of session on Digital Insurance around the world
Adding utility in a
customer’s day to day life
is a clever play to learn a
lot about a client and
create a trusted platform
that triggers at the right
time to create the right
policy for that individual
Lemonade is a renter and
home owner carrier but
they would describe
themselves as a
behavioural science and
technology company -
Lemonade are intensely
interested in the ‘why?’ Why
do people do what they do,
and how does that ‘why’
relate to insurance
