Controls the amount of fuel being sent inside the High pressure pump
Injects the fuel inside the combustion chamber – actuated by a solenoid
Actuates the EGR valve to open according to the required lift

➢ The load requirement is understood from the
ACC pedal position.
➢ Based on the engine running rpm and the acc
pedal position, rail pressure to be maintained is
arrived and correspondingly the metering unit
is actuated.
➢ Based on the rail pressure, the energizing time
for the injector solenoid is arrived.
➢ Based on the CAM sensor, the engine at TDC is
arrived and the injector of the corresponding
cylinder is actuated.

➢ Boost pressure is monitored and the input is
provided to ECU to adjust the fuel quantity and
injection quantity accordingly.
➢ Coolant temperature and oil temperature is
sensed to cut down the power of engine under
high coolant temperature / low oil pressure
temperature condition

➢ Based on the engine operating conditions, the
amount of EGR to be sent inside the engine is
decided.
➢ The existing position of EGR valve is sensed
and accordingly input is provided to DC motor
of EGR valve to lift EGR valve to desired
position.

Engine Protection Emission control (OBD)
➢ Engine function is controlled by the sensors and
actuators.
➢ Any failure of sensor / actuator may lead to a
severe damage to engine / vehicle and may even
lead to safety issues.
➢ Monitoring and control is required to save the
engine from failure.
➢ Any failure of sensor / actuator may
lead to increased emission from the
exhaust which will not be accepted
by the regulatory bodies.
➢ Monitoring and control is required to
limit the exhaust from engine.

  • 4. 4 EDC Components overview Metering Unit (Fuel quantity control) Output Actuators EGR DC Motor (EGR position control) Injector (Fuel injection) Controls the amount of fuel being sent inside the High pressure pump Injects the fuel inside the combustion chamber – actuated by a solenoid Actuates the EGR valve to open according to the required lift
  • 5. 5 ➢ The load requirement is understood from the ACC pedal position. ➢ Based on the engine running rpm and the acc pedal position, rail pressure to be maintained is arrived and correspondingly the metering unit is actuated. ➢ Based on the rail pressure, the energizing time for the injector solenoid is arrived. ➢ Based on the CAM sensor, the engine at TDC is arrived and the injector of the corresponding cylinder is actuated.   • 7. 7 ➢ Based on the engine operating conditions, the amount of EGR to be sent inside the engine is decided. ➢ The existing position of EGR valve is sensed and accordingly input is provided to DC motor of EGR valve to lift EGR valve to desired position.   • 9. 9 Engine Protection Emission control (OBD) ➢ Engine function is controlled by the sensors and actuators. ➢ Any failure of sensor / actuator may lead to a severe damage to engine / vehicle and may even lead to safety issues. ➢ Monitoring and control is required to save the engine from failure. ➢ Any failure of sensor / actuator may lead to increased emission from the exhaust which will not be accepted by the regulatory bodies. ➢ Monitoring and control is required to limit the exhaust from engine.
