Mise en scene refers to everything that appears before the camera and how it is arranged, including composition, sets, props, costumes, sound, and lighting. In action films, mise en scene is used along with cinematography and editing to influence the viewer's perspective. Typically, the main character is muscular or intelligent to portray power and superiority over others, while males are represented in a more exaggerated and dominant way than females, who often serve as eye candy or accessories. Sets are also designed so that male characters appear taller and bigger to convey power and status.
