This is the act of capturing photographic images in space through
the use of a number of controllable elements.
This mainly involves framing/camera shots/angles/composition,
editing, sound, mise-en- scene which includes lighting, props,
settings characters, facial expression, acting, costumes etc.
It is also a function of the relationship between the camera lens,
then cameras position and the capacity of its motion.
Acting
Camera Angles and Movement
Framing, Editing and Montage
Set Design
Lighting
Soundtrack and Sound Effects
Costume and Makeup Design
Building Suspense
They are used to show the different
aspects of the film, such as where they
are set, the different characters and
themes of the film.
They are many types of camera a shots.
For example;
Extreme close up: This magnifies an
object or feature in the body.
Mid Shot: This is when the shot
captivates half the body of a person.
Establishing Shot: Camera positioned
far from the person or shows them a full
body shot.
Extreme Long Shot: Which is when the
camera is positioned far from the person
and shows them a full body shot.
Tilt: This is when the camera moves from the bottom to the top or from
the top to the bottom focusing on one object or one subject.
Zoom in and Zoom out: This is when the camera focuses on a point
and either moves in or out to focus on that object or subject.
Panning: This is when the camera is focusing on a person over the
shoulder of another person.
Point of View shot: This is when you see the POV (point of view) of the
main character , following the characters perspective, either the
protagonist’s or the antagonists..
This is the various point of views taken from the
camera, showing parts of the scene in different
perspectives.
Birds Eye View Angle: This is when the camera
is positioned directly over the character or object
looking down.
High Angle: This is when the camera is
positioned from a high point looking down at an
object or a character.
Low Angle: This is when the camera is
positioned at a low point looking up at the
character or object.
Eye Level: This is when the camera is positioned
as if it is human actually observing the scene.
This is how everything is organised within the frame, which
includes the objects, the actors and space. The frame needs
to be positioned horizontally on the left and right axis and
vertically from the top making sure that there is a balanced
composition and it is clear for the audience to understand
the concept of the clip/film.
However, what affects the frame is the space because this
affects the scene and what affects how the audience
interprets the scene is the objects, the backgrounds and
where the objects are placed.
This is when the clip is manipulated to add affect to suit the media
associated environment regarding the clip in this case the genre
thriller. For example; the tempo. This is because it can be slowed
down or sped up to create a particular meaning for the scene
being captured. Also, in thriller films the tempo can be sped up for
the scene to add tension and suspense for the audience to intake.
However, in romance films, the tempo can be slowed down.
The timing between the shot transitions can also be manipulated
to fit it properly with the visual size and as a result of this affect, it
can make scenes show and express much more meanings and
background detail by emphasising an event within the scene.
This is an important role. This is because it reflects the way
the audience reflects the way the audience reacts to an
image and this sets the tone and atmosphere. In romantic
movies, the music is slow, passionate and gentle to
emphasise particular intimate scenes to fit the ‘lovey
dovey’ atmosphere. There are two types of sound; diegetic
and non-diegetic sound
Diegetic sound is the actual sound within the clip, which
is the natural and original audio. Such as the characters
dialogue, background noises , the object sounds in the
actual clip.
Non-diegetic sound is the sound added on after, which is
actually added on. This can be the narrators voiceover, the
sound effects are added to create a dramatic effect or to
emphasise an imagine on screen or it can be the mood
music to set the tone of the film.
Mise-en-scene is everything that is put into the scene. It refers to the lighting,
props, characters, settings, acting space, costumes and facial expressions
within that particular frame.
The casting is another part of mise-en-scene, as it refers to the
actors/actresses chosen to take part in the film. Also, type casting is when a
particular actor gets known for the specific role they play in movies. For
example; Eddie Murphy, who is associated with the film ‘Daddy Day Care’
cinematography to Steven Poster.
The settings refer to where the films are taken place. This can be a real or
imaginary place which can also be a near or specific place.
Costumes are really important in mise-en-scene. This is mainly because the
audience gets an understanding of the time and place of the movie it is set in,
also giving an understanding of the characters social status and personal
style.
Props are used on stage by the actors because they have a symbolic
meaning in the film.
